Technically we don't know if the PS5 will have optical out, but it seems unlikely.

Can your headset be used wired via an audio jack? If so you could just plug it into the controller; you might need to buy a special cable/adapter depending on the manufacturer.

Of course the DualSense has a microphone built in, so if you do need a replacement it'll probably be more economical to just invest in a decent pair of headphones.

I have this:

https://www.astrogaming.com/en-gb/products/mixamps/mixamp-tr-gen-3.html

Which connects via optical and USB then my headset connects via a normal audio jack thing.

Even Miles Morales isn’t confirmed as a launch title, right? They said Holiday, so people have assumed it’ll be there at launch but it highlights how little they’ve actually confirmed about their launch plans.

The holiday period is about four or five weeks long, so even if it’s late it won’t be by much. And maybe they’ll  just skip the last month of testing and patch it later if it’s going to be a few weeks late.

Have Sony or Microsoft actually manufacturered their new consoles yet?

All signs point to yes,* and Sony  and Microsoft recently (like last week) stated that their consoles are going to be on sale in calendar year 2020 as originally planned. So they’d kind of have to be.

* PS5 production line snaps have stated to pop up, and Nikkei reported that Sony is shopping around for increased manufacturing capacity to meet a doubled production target of 10 million units this financial year.

It's all rather confusing it has to be said. China seems to be winding down their mass manufacturing, possibly due to very dangerous air pollution levels for the passed few years.

A classified Powerpoint presentation delivered to ministers warns of food and fuel shortages around Christmas if lorries get stuck at Dover, while 1,500 soldiers are already on standby – ready to hit the streets to help police deal with potential disorder.

That's a very long process that's barely begun, and I imagine high-end electronics will be among the last things to go.

This really is going to be the most unexciting new console launch ever, isn't it?

(I'm still in)

If it launches with MM and Demon's Souls it's probably the best PS launch in history.

But people really underestimate COVID on here. They''re gonna wait as long as possible before locking things down.

I think it's definitely part of it. Big product launches in competitive markets is never an easy task and the reality is the games studios across the board are seeing big impacts from Covid, so even if the hardware is perhaps less affected once manufacturing comes back online, the software isn't. They know as well as us that launching with no games is a bad position to be in (look at Halo's delay hamstringing the Xbox slightly) so I suspect they are keeping things very fluid, keeping eyes on the other side of the fence and what they are doing, and trying to balance customer expectation of "pre-Christmas" verses giving their studios and partners absolutely as long as they can to get things finished to aid their launch marketing/position.

I do wonder how many more big titles delays it would take for them to both say "you know what, sorry everyone it's a 2021 release".

I think most people forget how lacklustre the previous Playstation launches have been, even the XB1 had a better launch line up than the PS4.

The only exception would have to be the original Playstation, although I lived off of Demo 1 for a solid month before getting any actual games as my dad wouldn't pay up.

I remember the PS2 launch where I couldn't get a game for it anywhere!

I even had to argue with the guy at Currys to put it through the till on it's own because he was adamant I could only have it in a game bundle and it wouldn't ring up.

They had no games so he expected me to either pay for a game bundle and wait until they were in stock or he would cancel my pre-order.

I just kept saying, "Try it on the till, try it on the till." until he eventually agreed and that it 100% wouldn't go through.

It did. Dickhead.

So I then traipsed round town hunting for a game to play on my new console (and a memory card so I could save my games!). Can't remember if I found Timesplitters that day or afterwards but that was a proper shower of shit launch.

Mine connects via optical out as well as USB. Does this mean it's destined for the bin?

If no optical out to usb MixAmp, you might just be able to get a whatever it does have -> optical converter. You can also get an optical audio extractor with various outputs. I'd bet you'll be OK one way or another.

Is anyone set on getting a digital PS5? Are you happy being at the mercies of the PSN's price-points? Do we think that Sony might overhaul their price/sales policies to make digital more attractive?

Also, getting an external HDD is going to be pretty much essential for both console versions, isn't it?

I'll be going for a drive on the PS5 and possible digital only (if it's an option with Series S) on Xbox. I really like the idea of digital only but as you point out, being hostage to PSN RRPs isn't something I can subscribe to yet and I can't see that changing.

Re: HDD... I don't have one on either my launch PS4 or Xbox One so probably not
