PlayStation 5 - Next gen is expensive

We haven't actually seen a gameplay demo of a single game that is next gen only yet: that’s not only unprecedented, it’s very very worrying a few months out from release.

We would have had impressions of KillZone, or Perfect Dark Zero, or Luigi’ Mansion or Mario 64 or Fzero etc by now. And most certainly have seen some gamplay footage/shots at this point.

i know Covid, but this is beginning to feel like the most half hearted/disorganised console cycle launch of all time.

I think it’s likely we’re in for another generation of the same world sizes, enemy counts etc as we’ve had for the last two. Just rendered at pointless 4K now!

I thought that having SSDs across the board means that worlds can be larger (well, except for cross-gen games and MS games that have to run on the One S and X)?

Whether resources and budget allow for them to be created and filled with interesting content is another matter I suppose.

Are you hinting at the PS5 and below expectations for us the consumers?

Not really, more the point that Sony will steamroller ahead with the release regardless of  quality, the health and welfare of their people, or anything else - same goes for Microsoft.

Thanks. "Will work" might be subtly different from "gets the benefits of" though, I guess. I don't really know enough about how 3D is done.

It works with any stereo headphones, the better the headphones the better it'll sound so if anything those Sony Gold headsets won't be great given they're pretty awful. It almost certainly won't work with any existing surround sound headsets like the Astros.

Makes a big difference to marketing and especially coming up to Xmas you don't want to have the dearest one.

Microsoft have thought about that problem too, they have a Brighthouse option (without the penalty interest rate) for people who can't pay it upfront, Xbox All Access:

Quote

Klarna financing for Xbox All Access lets you spread the cost into equal monthly payments with 0% interest and no upfront cost. Your monthly payments are made by direct debit each month, the monthly payment shown means the finance policy will be paid off in 24 months with no extra cost (0% p.a.).

Most powerful box, cheap unlimited games* and you can PAYG too.  They shouldn't need to match the price with that offering.

*As long as you are willing to keep up a monthly payment.

If All Access is financed by Klarna is it subject to a credit check?

Seems so, so I suppose it isn't for some people, but is it advisable to be buying an expensive console if your financial situation is that way?

They've been fiddling with the idea since the X360 and now it's about to go Prime Time. People wanted their mobile phone subscription model, they've now got it from Microsoft. Sony could follow suit I suppose. It's how the car industry is managing to stay afloat these days.

I don't see how it can be managed any differently. Both consoles have a low profile with the mainstream, which is great for hardcore gamers.

I don’t think Sony sees it that way at all, their projections seem pretty bold, and certainly with PS4 they didn’t need any warm up time - that thing bolted out of the gate.

Whether any of it is great for anyone all really depends on price, the launch line up - and whether it’s actually really ready for release. I mean the only one we know for certain at this moment is Miles Morales, and even that is quite a slim offering compared to the full game.

I think the right thing to do would be to delay the launch for at least 6 month up to a year. Thank fuck for backwards compatibility eh.

The holiday/Christmas period is probably the biggest time of the year, so I don't see the release dates changing now. Sony have shown their games, and I'm excited.

Why not?

If they can default to bog standard stereo they should be able to work

Sure, I should have been more specific - I wouldn't have thought they'd work effectively with the surround sound decoding in something like the MixAmp. The headphones themselves would work fine in stereo of course.

Quite pleased my Turtle Beach headset's on the way out just at the end of this generation.  Had it most of the PS4 era, so it's done well but it's something in need of replacement anyway which helps justify getting one that takes full advantage of the PS5 :)

Mine connects via optical out as well as USB. Does this mean it's destined for the bin?

Technically we don't know if the PS5 will have optical out, but it seems unlikely.

Can your headset be used wired via an audio jack? If so you could just plug it into the controller; you might need to buy a special cable/adapter depending on the manufacturer.

Of course the DualSense has a microphone built in, so if you do need a replacement it'll probably be more economical to just invest in a decent pair of headphones.

I tend to buy Turtle Beach headset's too. I like the cutouts on the earpads for glasses (Sony?), plus the surround sound is exceptional.
