The PS4 release date was announced on the 20th August, so it's not that out of the ordinary. Probably announce it in the next week or so.

They did? Honestly missed that, when is it coming out?

We haven't actually seen a gameplay demo of a single game that is next gen only yet: that’s not only unprecedented, it’s very very worrying a few months out from release.

We would have had impressions of KillZone, or Perfect Dark Zero, or Luigi’ Mansion or Mario 64 or Fzero etc by now. And most certainly have seen some gamplay footage/shots at this point.

i know Covid, but this is beginning to feel like the most half hearted/disorganised console cycle launch of all time.

We have, we’ve seen Rstchet & Clank.

I think the date is pretty unimportant. We know it’s probably going to be November. They announced the price at E3, in May.

I’m honestly amazed at the frustration over not knowing how much something will cost, or when you’ll be able to buy it. It’s marketing - they’ll release that information when it suits them and not before. Until it’s released it might as well not exist.

Get the wise guy here.

I think they'd both announced price by this point, but this year has probably thrown some spanners in the works. I'm not sure the price coming with the date is going to sway people either way in their buying intentions (barring a return to Kuturagi-style second job thinking).

So what do you classify the Gran Turismo 7 and Rachet & Clank: Rift Apart reveals as? The games were always going to be the weaklink, given the current pandemic, unless people want stuff shit out half-baked and patched after the fact.

I do get the impression that gamers are their own worst enemies in some cases, want everything immediately but complain about what comes with that.

There was a report in July that Sony had upped their production order by nearly 50% to hit 10 million shippable units in 2020. They must surely have some sat in boxes now (or at least very soon) for that to be anywhere near possible?

Their production target covers until the end of their FY, which is 31/03/21. It doesn't matter how many finished units they have sat in a warehouse at the moment, the software part isn't ready.

It looks like they increased their order for FY 2020 (until next March), and that was in July. I think it’s likely that was the console just entering production.

Yeah it is definitely the consumer at fault and never the big corporations pushing their wares, sometimes years in advance. They did nothing to help create the culture.

Expensive premium consoles (before anyone interjects as I have been saying this for a while was confirmed by MS in the recent hot chips slides saying the cost of the die is the most expensive they're ever had - including the one x that was released for what 449?) plus not wanting to be undercut by the competition at a very high sensitive price point means you guys won't get the usual price reveal schedule. They're both probably wanting to hover around 500 dollars plus but waiting to see what the other settles on

Both will be around 599 us dollars, in the midst of a pandemic and global depression neither one wants to be the one to have that moment until they have the hype built up.

I suspect both would happily delay till spring but can't risk the hit on the share price by going first.

Depends if Microsoft are willing to take a bath on the XSX this time, unlike the X1X where they weren't willing to lose money on it. $500 for the X1X was ~breakeven for them. The XSX has higher costs so if they want to to match Sony, they'll be losing money this time at that price.

But as the XSS exists, do they really need to price match Sony anyway? You get more, you pay more. That's how most other tiered product lines work.

You can feel free to blame the evil corporations for starting it, but if the target ain't complaining about such sales tactics, who shoulders the responsibility now? Much like most other consumer trends that have gained popularity in the last decade.

Your "I hope you nerds aren't actually excited for a video game console" post is a great candidate for a neg.

There's nothing wrong with being excited, where did I say people shouldn't be? I said I was surprised anyone would be annoyed about not having that information;; the drip-feed just seems to be part and parcel of modern marketing.

For the record, I wasn't being condescending, but in retrospect I can see how my post might have been taken that way. Apologies to anyone who it bothered.

Getting away from stupid back and forth from bored Sunday posters for a second, do we know anything about what devices will be supported for the super-awesome 3D sound at launch? From memory, the Cerny talk spent a lot of time on headphones and HRTFs, but was light on what that meant. Like will my Sony PlayStation-branded (2.0! I think that's pre- them labelling them as Gold or Platinum happened) work, will just all headphones work? Will my TV etc.

Makes a big difference to marketing and especially coming up to Xmas you don't want to have the dearest one.

The Platinum and Gold Wireless Headsets, as well as third-party headsets that connect via USB port or audio jack, will work on PS5 (the headset companion app is not compatible with PS5).

Please note, not all PlayStation officially licensed or third-party peripherals/accessories may work on PS5. We recommend checking with the manufacturer to confirm whether a product will work on PS5 and specific titles.

Thanks. "Will work" might be subtly different from "gets the benefits of" though, I guess. I don't really know enough about how 3D is done.

And by all means you can feel free to use words such as “evil” to make your point ;)

To answer your question, which I think I understand, the responsibility lies with the corporations who routinely over promise and under deliver, their whole MO is to whip their audience into a frenzy . So of course people are going to be disappointed, or over excited, impatient , or any number of complaints and ailments that occur as a result of over exposure and over stimulation. They want it all and they want it now, and they want it to be bigger and better than the last time, because that’s what they were promised :seanr:

Are you hinting at the PS5 and below expectations for us the consumers?

Our current situation is definitely compounding things. We have a little more time on our hands being more at home etc and therefore we expect a continual flow of information from the Platform holders. The lack of an E3 has also dampened things for me, especially on a next gen console launch year.

This time next year this will all be forgotten and we will all (hopefully) be enjoying new game experiences on our spangly machines. I really think next gen won't properly begin until 2021 in reality.

I've already forgotten 2020.
