PlayStation 5 - Next gen is expensive

On the Giant Beastcast today, they said that they've heard that the PS5 might actually be more expensive and Sony have less wiggle room on price. That's the second time I've seen or heard that come up but I can't really figure out why. Aren't they pretty similar but the Series X is more powerful? I would have thought that would be the more expensive one based on that.

I think people think the crazy fast SSD is going to cost more than the one in the Xbox.  i reckon Sony will swallow that cost in the knowlegde that it'll get cheaper over time so better to race to a lead right at the start. Launch momentum is important.

They know they can take a hit on hardware because they make so much money elsewhere. In fact, they predict in their latest financial report that PS5 will have the most profitable launch year out of all of their consoles.

Quote

Unlike PS1/PS2/PS3/PS4's launch years, PS5's launch year will see a huge profit of $1.66B thanks to :

the big PlayStation Store Revenues

recurrent Services Revenues

highly-profitable first party games

Of course we don't know how big that hit is they are taking.

It's amazing how woke (and I mean that in a positive sense) resetera can be about some things and yet when it comes to gaming discussion it often descends into a playground bunfight.

Also anybody who owns a gaming PC will tell you in a heartbeat that both of these consoles will be using loads of "fake 4k" (upscaled 1440p most likely) because on paper neither of them are powerful enough to run native 4k current gen games, let alone next gen ones.

I wouldn't be surprised if the chip yields for PS5 are lower than Series X which has a lower clocked GPU.

Yields are more related to size of the chip as a bigger chip has more possibility of having a defect in that part of the silicon wafer. The speed they chose for it was more likely chosen as a result of what most of the samples they tested could easily achieve without resorting to cherry picking the best ones. Microsoft chose the highest 100% stable speed they could achieve, Sony were happy to let the clocks drop in some circumstances for better overall effective speed.

They are both on the same manufacturing process with the same manufacturer, so Microsoft would more likely have yield problems than Sony.

On the subject of cooling, apparently Sony will be using liquid metal instead of regular thermal compound:

Here's a link the the patent. Not that Sony are the first to do this, although it's only been an aftermarket enthusiast solution until recently, but presumably they're doing something they feel is worth patenting when it comes to the manufacturing process; Sony's big on automation.

Besides sounding cooler, liquid metal literally is: it keeps temperatures lower via better heat transfer to the heatsink, which will be important given PS5's high clocks. It's only one part of the puzzle, of course, but given the size of the console I'm guessing Sony's 'secret' is that the machine is 30% fan.

It seems to be a patent on using a sealing gasket to keep it in place, between a silicon die and a heat spreader for example. Which wouldn’t solve the problem of the thermal paste between the heat spreader and the heat sink.

I really doubt that the PS5 is going to feature state of the art thermal material painstakingly brushed in place by artisan robots, if the PS4 featured cheap thermal paste applied as well as they could get away with.

I imagine the APU will be long dead before it can reach the temps required to evaporate the liquid metal.

I’m not convinced they would want to use it. It shaves off a few degrees at best and needs to be applied well, unlike the bodge job that’s done in factories. It’s also conductive so will literally fry things if they put too much on and it leaks out the sides, which it always does with these things.

I find myself getting increasingly impatient with the lack of info on both the new consoles. I'm starting to think we won't see anything in August.

Gamescom 27th-30th. There will be stuff.

I heard Colin Moriarty speculate that they'll end up delaying until next year. I'm starting to agree with him.

Is that the same Colin Moriarty Kinda Funny had to give the boot because he was too much of a far-right baw bag?

*derail sorry but, yes being conservative is far right. Especially in the US when that means you’re a Trumpo and where Biden Harris are centre right

No when he denied racism and white supremacy existed, blamed several women for their own rape threats, kept appearing on podcasts with far-right dickheads and posted a number of problematic things about race science (i.e Eugenics), that was what made him a far-right choad.

There are toddlers who have better developed critical skills than Moriarty.

So are we expecting anything from Sony this month on PS5 news, price, preorder or release games? I am beginning to tire of this drip feed! Just give me the info.

I think they’re both trying to psych each other out over price. It is getting boring now though.
