What was the PS4 pad capacity?

Supposedly 800mA at launch, 1000mA in later revisions.

It's worth pointing out that this doesn't mean much on its own. For example, as much as people like to bang on about the lightbar a far more likely cause for the DS4's battery use is its high polling rate of around 500Hz wirelessly; the Xbox One's is 125Hz and I want to say Nintendo's controllers are half that, although I'd need to dig up a source. Given that controller battery life is a common complaint with PS4, Sony might have decided to take on a few milliseconds more input lag and poll at a lower rate.

Another factor would be the power draw of the new features in the DualSense, although I wouldn't be surprised if the haptics are actually more energy efficient than the old rumble motors.

Still better than adding AAA batteries though. You can always use it wired if you wanted.

Yeah AAAs would be a shit move

AAs is where it's at :D

EDIT more seriously AAs are better - AAA rechargeable you'd be looking at 1600mah battery (2x800 ish) whereas you can get nearly 5000mah for the AAs - that plus AAA rechargeables are a faff as not many things use them and if they do they are usually low power draw like tv remotes. AAs you will use for all sorts.

The 4.2 V marking is odd. You sometimes see that on 3.7 V batteries because it’s the voltage you charge it to, but it’s still a nominal 3.7 V. I wonder if the text next to it says “maximum voltage” or something. I doubt it’s actually a higher voltage cell as that would mean a different chemistry.

Edit - Yep, it says “charging limit voltage”, that’s just an ordinary 3.7 V cell like in the DS4. 50% extra capacity is nice but it’s still not as much energy as 2 AA batteries.

I'm also holding on to the hope of a major back-compat bombshell - ps1-4 games playable either straight from the disc, or via PSNow.

i dunno 2020 year is teaching me that most news is bad :D

Let's hope PS5 bucks the trend

Oh I thought I was agreeing about the battery life being shit but you're saying the DS4 is shit even if it had good battery life?

Er no. We're good. DS4 is great. Battery life is shite. Even doubling the DS4 battery life in the DualSense would still be shite compared to joycons or the Xbox One controller. S'all I meant.

The PS4 can’t read CDs, and I doubt the PS5 will be able to so the entire PS1 library and a substantial chunk of the PS2 library will be off limits.

Well if the PS2 and PS1 games currently on PSnow are anything to go by I wouldn’t hold your breath.

That's what part of the bombshell would be - a commitment to really expanding the previous gen games available on Now. Right now it's pretty paltry.

Why on earth would you spend £500 to play ps1/2 games ?

Fuck off - Jumping Flash, Battle Arena Toshinden and original Wipeout are what I want to play for five seconds and then never touch again.

Failing that, use that time to make sure the new console is really good and has shit hot VR in the pipeline.

If Sony ever decide to go through that colossal project it won’t be while they’re also juggling a console launch and COVID-19.

You should never think of it as “they should make the PS5 play PS1 games”. I’m sure that’s a solved problem technologically. (Look at the PS2 emulator on PS4.) It’s a case of them needing to get people to publish PS1 and PS2 games on PSN, and PS3 games on PSNow. That’s just not something I see happening.

Edit - Beyond the existing PS1 library. But who knows what systems Sony’s licenced to distribute those games on?
