PlayStation 5 - Next gen is expensive

Has the battery capacity been confirmed in the new controller?

It had better improved. The PS4 pad is shite for a number of reasons for me but the battery takes the mickey

Also, this news basically confirms that PS4 wheels won't be compatible on PS5. I'm not surprised though, Sony always do this.

There was an article (based on a rumour) yesterday which said that the battery life is 3 to 4 hours longer than the DS4. So that's 4 to 5 hour battery life.

Also today's news confirms that steering wheels will be compatible on PS5 for supported games.

It’s pretty standard not to have cross hen support for controllers . The worst example of this is the Wii u pro controller not being compatible with the switch . It is basically Identical .

hoping against hope that headsets and steering wheels will work but not banking on it .

Hmm the Wii u pro pad is crap and an awful shape, Switch pro is best pad ever - they are basically identical in the same way a PS3 pad and PS4 pad are basically identical...

Do we have any idea if Astro mix amps and the other variants will work on ps5 yet?

I don't think the battery capacity is the issue, it's the fact that it shines a stupidly bright light back onto your TV by default. If they just made it turn off when you're not using camera tracking / playing multiplayer it would probably have 10x the longevity.

It wouldn’t make any difference. The LED is drawing next to bugger all power .

Well, it's like any of the other functions of the device have a high current draw, so every little helps. I do think it's safe to say the default settings signficantly impact the battery life, I notice a big difference when I turn it down. Even then, I can still see if reflecting back at me during darker scenes (TLOU II was particularly bad for this).

edit - okay someone has actually gone and tested this so the "big difference" I noticed is presumably just confirmation bias. I still find the way it reflects back off the TV very annoying, mind.

Well, Other than the PS4 controller having added functionality vs the ps3 one .

WiiU pro pad has all the functionality of the switch pro pad . The fact you can’t use it and have to fork out £60 if you want one is infuriating .

Specialty peripherals, such as officially licensed racing wheels, arcade sticks, and flight sticks, will work with PS5 games and supported PS4 games.

I read that as "fight sticks" at first but I think they mean the Thrustmaster HOTAS.

You might extend the life of the battery by about 30 seconds By not having the LED. It’s power consumption will be minuscule  . The main draw will be the vibration ( you are effectively driving  a motor that spins a weighted shaft ) and the communications to the console .

The Switch came out in 2017 and the Wii U Pro controller was an optional accessory for a console that sold like 12 million consoles. The PS4 pad came with every single one of the 100+ million consoles Sony have sold and it’s 2020, when their direct competitor has announced full forwards compatibility with their controllers and you would hope not filling the world with hundreds of millions of bits of obsolete, electronic junk just because that they don’t do special trigger malarky would be a bigger priority.

Maybe I have noticed it more as I've had some mammoth play sessions of late (I played God of War and then TLOU II basically back to back). If I play ~6 hours two days in a row, then with the light on full brightness, I only have to forget to charge it once and then I'm having to plug it in to be able to play to a point where I'm happy to stop. So that extra hour and a half might be making all the difference. Or I could be talking nonsense.

Regardless the longevity is dreadful compared to the Xbone controller, which has the added benefit of running of AAs, so you can just switch the batteries out and carry on playing.

The best accessory you can buy for the PS4 is the official dual docking station. The pads make such a satisfying click when you Dock them, it charges dead quick and if one dies you grab the next one and go again. The USB sockets don't get used and knackered up as you only use them once to sync to console. It's been brilliant. So good ill bet the dual sense won't fit.

Please note, not all PlayStation officially licensed or third-party peripherals/accessories may work on PS5. We recommend checking with the manufacturer to confirm whether a product will work on PS5 and specific titles.

They haven’t confirmed anything specific will work. Just that it might work.

Can we assume that the Thrustmaster T.Flight HOTAS 4 will work on PS5? I'm not sure from that.

Um. I don’t think you can assume anything. Check the manufacturers website.

They’re no longer wired, or using particular special protocols. They’re not gaining brand new buttons or sticks. Specialist controllers are all USB.

My headset uses the optical out. Has there been any mention on if the PS5 will have an optical port?

they’ve not talked ports. We can hope for three hdmi ports to bring back the joy of the early PS3 hardware reveals.

and/or GT7 cockpit mode.

It's missing gyro and HD Rumble. Still annoying, as it shits over the Switch controller.

Obsolete? I either trade in my old controllers for someone else to use or keep using them on old systems.

Only time a fifty quid controller goes in the bin is if it’s knackered.

Over the next few years, having spare PS4 controllers will be largely pointless if you have a PS5. The second you want to play a PS5 game in local multiplayer, you have to buy extra PS5 pads and unless you’re still using your old PS4, they’re essentially redundant.

Too many of those products seem to be an unrealistic €50. No way is the controller that low. The headphones are supposed to be fancy, right? So hardly that low either. Camera would presumably be more too.
