Dumb, implausible idea I just had: because Sony have complete control over the PS5’s heat output, at least one hardware revision in the future could be completely passively cooled, with no fans.

that heat has to be dissipated and go somewhere. I’m not sure 2+GHz Ryzen APUs are getting passively cooled anytime soon.

control over the heat output only works if you massively underclock and somehow get the same computational  output.

Yeah you can’t have a Console throttling.

Nothing stopping anyone from modding them with some fancy work.

Anyway I’m dying to hear the price and release date but also to see what ports it’s going to have. We are almost in August and we have no real idea of what the PlayStation 5 experience is going to be like. I’m talking dashboard and connectivity and those side features like media playback and recording or streaming.

Come on Sony.

24K gold plated PS5 anyone? Only ££££

Gold plated touch pad?

Disk version!

The African warlords who might actually  buy that may not have access to a decent internet connection when they’re out with their troops menacing villages.

So having binned off my Amazon account a couple of years back, what are the best options for pre-ordering a PS5 do we think, just based on reliability from previous experience. Just realised they’ll probably open up relatively soon and I have no idea who’s trustworthy, etc.

Who have you guys previously had good experiences with?

I think I'm probably going to go ShopTo or SimplyGames. Haven't used either of them for a console before but never had a bad experience with game pre-orders and they price competitively.

Think this picture shows these two lads PS4ing on the same pod:

It just has the barrier around it for Covid and it's probably in the process of getting disassembled.

They both have to quarantine in that cage behind them for 14 days afterwards.

Apparently Sony are going to take orders direct

Given their legendary customer service it sounds like spiffing idea to entrust them with a £500+ purchase directly.

Ha , yeah maybe . Although I subscribe to ps plus and ps now and buy Almost  all my games digitally and never had a issue ( outside of the mega fuck up way back wheb ). YMMV obvs .

No need as HDMI can carry both!

Twin HDMI's were introduced with the 4K Blu-Ray Players to help the huge financial burden of upgrading your TV and AV Amp just to get 4K pictures.

Normally yes you would route a single HDMI output from a device straight into an AV Amp, and then AV Amp to the TV. But if your AV Amp doesn't support the latest HDMI standard, those Twin HDMI's help a lot by allowing you to buy a new 4K TV set AND keep your existing AV Amp just for the audio for it. (Not bothered about new audio codecs, Dolby HD and DTS-MA are perfectly adequate for gaming audio)

For all of its convenience though, I've found HDMI's constantly shifting standards bollocks, and it's clear they just want you to keep binning perfectly good equipment every 8 years or so and buying new shit.

I'd be happy with the minimalist look they've had since Ps3.

My only wish for OS would be automatic game save syncing anywhere you have an account and a nice, smooth responsive plex app.

Oof. The original PS3 is a terrible piece of design.

Also surprisingly heavy!

Was it?   Menu/Cross bar thingy across the top that split, games, music., video and that was about it.  What was heavy about it other than the crazy way they insisted you installed your games, which we seem to be seeing shades of on PS4 (double the HD space required for the game install)

I reckon we'll see it continue.  Sony have been pretty steady eddy on that design for a long time and have added stuff along the way like the sidebar concept but nothing too different which I've liked.  Compare that to MS who seem to want to try something new every 18 months.

I wonder what we're gonna see at the August State of Play. We'll probably know what the launch line-up will be. Spider-Man, Astro Bot and Demon's Souls would be my guess, but it would be nice to have a Housemarque game at launch for this gen as well. But they also have Kena, Deathloop and Bugsnax, so they're probably gonna space it out a little.
