I've always understood Sony tv's to be overpriced buuuuuuuuuuuut Android and Linux OS's would mean the ability to stream GEForce Now and Steam straight to the TV (and possibly XCloud).   Stop I can only get so erect.

and..

VRR in hdmi 2.1 is different to freesync I think. I just hope Sony handle it better than they have the audio this gen for example and give us more menu

options to hard toggle stuff.

So what are you guys expecting from the GUI?

I think I’m really happy for the dynamic scrollable game list to continue. It’s clean, neat, quick and really useful.

I think the “capture gallery” and “library” and all the inbuilt stuff should be moved to the more static top bar in it’s own folder.

The PlayStation Plus button can go, who uses that?

Communities, surely thats due a massive massive update. Personally I would rather it got swapped out for the PlayStation blog as I don’t use it.

Events? Does anyone really use that? How about it becomes a server browser. So you pick your game from the list which dynamically updates and you see real time info on player numbers on a server or what servers friends are on and from that you can just join a game rather than loading the game up to do the searching. That’s been a bit of a dream of mine for over a decade.

They have to sort that store out, it’s just those Sony servers aren’t up to scratch so it’s a pretty horrible experience.

I still remember how they ditched all the good stuff they had incorporated into the PS3 over the years when they launched the PS4 - so I expect a similar step backwards with the PS5, and if we’re lucky they will gradually patch it back to a decent level. You’d think they would always build on what they have had before but it seems like that’s not how it works.

I agree, I hope they stick with the "List of X recent games, then library" thing as the top level of the OS. It just lines up so well with how people actually play games. If it's good enough for Nintendo you know they've done something right for once.

Moving the capture gallery and Sharefactory functions in to something a bit more convenient and cohesive than their separate apps would be nice. Even if Sharefactory-style video editing needs a lot of RAM, now they can hopefully just do a quick suspend of the game to the SSD rather than closing it altogether. The Create button makes me optimistic about that, presumably it'll just be an OS function.

They should ditch the movie/TV streaming app. It's far less convenient than just letting you have streaming apps as top-level apps. They didn't even do anything useful with it, like letting you search across the apps in an integrated fashion. (As far as I know!) It's just a shonky permanent folder that takes too long to open.

Speaking of streaming, I'll be interested to see what they do with Remote Play. Also, PSnow. They could fold the catalogue in to the Store for subscribers, and have streaming apps "install" as system icons like other games, to help make them more equivalent to "native" games.

Black and red. Hopefully it’s legit.

I don't think so. It's a shoddy recolour that's missed some of the white on the controller and blue light bounce along the right vent of the console itself.

It’s an internally-made O2 staff document telling them about a scheme where employees who shift the most Sony gear get entered in prize draws for Sony products, as well as things like ASOS vouchers. Unless the O2’s employee coercion division have the inside scoop on new console hardware I don’t think anyone should get too excited.

I'm mildly curious as to which ends up the most power efficient.  Those are some hefty clocks the PS5 is pushing, even if the SOC is smaller than the XSX.

Depends on how you define power efficiency, performance relative to power required to achieve that performance or absolute power used.

Xbox Series X has a 200-220V 2.2A PSU, so max power draw possible is 440-484 Watts sustained. It should not do that except in extreme circumstances like running Furmark and Prime95 (if you could ever run those on it in the first place of course).

The Xbox One X has a 1.3A PSU, so max power draw possible is 260-286 Watts sustained. It doesn't draw anywhere near that in actual gaming situations usually.

The PS5 GPU very likely runs way outside the optimum point on the power efficiency curve but has a marginally lower clocked CPU and a smaller physical chip to power.

As how inefficient RDNA 2 is beyond it's optimum efficiency is unknown, it makes it difficult to guestimate just how much more Watts it requires to sustain their chosen clocks over just going for the fixed clock option.

I'd probably bet on the Xbox Series X still requiring more Watts overall as the chip is just noticeably bigger, but it should be more efficient per Watt.

Rumour has it Sony’s going to announce the pricing and launch date at 9:30 pm CEST, ie in half an hour. This is from a Twitter user who has also sceptically posted a leak that the Dual Sense controller will weigh almost a kilo, so maybe his intel isn’t always it’s reliable.

Makes more sense they would do it at their august event and after the xbox event I would have thought but hey lets see

A kilo would probably have meant a bloody good battery though.

Or really strong haptics with some interesting astrobot challenges “can you hold this controller still enough?”
