PlayStation 5 - Next gen is expensive

The problem I can see with that, is the PS5 only has one standard USB port on the front. So you could plug your headset in, but not the HOTAS (or vice versa) :/

More ports around the back and you can easily get USB C to A adaptors.

I get the point you are making about Sony's first party strength but if you're a fan of Naughty Dogs output in particular are you going to go and buy a PS5 early on if you know that they probably won't ship a big PS5 game until 2023?

I suppose thats the downside of a studio putting so much effort into these lavishly produced games, the gap between titles gets longer and longer.

It depends. A couple of their studios have two teams now. Insomiac is currently working on three games and both Sony Santa Monica and Guerrilla have two teams. ND is probably a different story, though they probably have a smaller team working on The Last of Us: Factions, or whatever they're gonna call it.

I'm still curious to see what Sony's strategy is to take on the Switch. The Switch has been a huge hit this gen, I can't see Sony simply folding their arms to that and letting Nintendo have the handheld market completely to themselves for the next decade.

Obviously the PS5 tech is nowhere near portable and we're not going to see a Vita 2 anytime soo... ever, so we're left with some sort of riff on remote play, probably with tighter integration to their cloud service. We could see a dedicated mobile phone controller, fully kitted out with the DS5 buttons and triggers. I also have this strange idea that Sony could actually release a dedicated cloud based handheld console, with a nice screen, integrated controls, memory and whatever extra decompression chips they could use to speed up the tech side of things.

I've made the Switch my go-to console for indie games as I love the portability of the device, especially for the smaller games and I think it would be very foolish for either Sony or Microsoft to ignore the appeal of that.

An official PS Now/ Remote Play phone grip is probably the closest Sony will get. I’d take it.

Nintendo have had the handheld market completely to themselves plenty of times. It's no indication Sony will get involved.

How would they get involved, anyway? The handheld market got very difficult when smartphones took off, and although the 3DS got there in the end it was obviously extremely challenging for Nintendo to continue trying to support a traditional portable console alongside a home system. Switch has let them sidestep that by releasing every single one of their big home console titles on their handheld system simultaneously, but unless concession trays come back in to fashion Sony are hardly going to be able to release a handheld that plays PS5 games.

Nintendo are in a unique position with the Switch having gone down a completely different hardware route to Sony and MS, now the whole landscape has changed where people now expect to be able to play handheld or TV - so impossible for them to compete really. But decent PS Now and Xcloud apps combined with a grip solution could go a long way.

Yeah MS are leading by a mile in that respect, hopefully Sony will pick up the pace there and by improving their PS Now subscription, I think they will have to if they expect to shift a digital only console aimed at the mass market.

The good thing about PS Now is it goes both ways. You could be playing PS5 on your PS4 at launch......maybe.

Is it? I have the remote play app which works really well, do they not allow PS Now and Xcloud?

They have a ban on external cloud gaming services. Basically because it means people can play games on their systems without them also getting their 30% cut (and it’s unlikely that Microsoft and Sony will want to sell subs through apples systems at the same price they’d sell on their consoles and give away 30% )

I don’t think Sony have a PSnow app for anything but PS4 and PC just now, but I can’t imagine it’ll be too long before a mobile version appears. Dual Shock 4 and Xbox pad support on iOS didn’t just happen because Sony and MS felt like expanding their competitor’s input device variety.

There’s no Android version of those services either.

Edit - Oh, Xcloud Android is in beta! I missed that.

Xcloud iOS is also in beta. It features one game only, because Apple.

I'd imagine PS5 will be hugely successful and I'd want them to focus their time on games for that and getting a spangly new VR headset up and running. I'm in the minority, but I've not used my Switch since finishing Mario Odyssey.

We've technically had four Naughty Dog games this gen though and they are, supposedly, a two-at-a-time project studio:

1. The Last of Us Remastered - although not totally new it needed a lot of effort to get running right on PS4

2. Uncharted 4

3. Uncharted Lost Legacy - considering it was originally touted as DLC it was better than most games

4. The Last of Us Part II

So that's one every, roughly, two years. Not bad output so here's hoping that part of ND has been working on their first PS5 release and we won't have to wait too long.

Hopefully all the people who work at Naughty Dog now will be able to work as many hours as the people who made those games.

What would be foolish would be them burning money on that for a third time when the Nintendo they’d be competing against this time has killed its home console business to support this handheld.

But the central point is fair, if Nintendo think they can only now make a handheld by tying it to a TV based machine then all the people who couldn't get within a country mile of them before certainly aren't going to now.

Not to mention the Vita owners who felt screwed over by Sony's less than enthusiastic support of the thing before abandoning it. Try selling that again.

They've made a really convincing start with VR and the catalogue of games is superb. Keep growing that and leave the handheld thing to Nintendo. Everyone wins that way.

Killed? Last figures I saw the Switch was doing a little better than 'killed' - and let's not play the 'Switch is a handheld not a home console' game.

On that subject, I think it’s more likely that Nintendo will enter Sony’s console VR market than Sony having another go at a handheld.

You can literally buy a handheld only version. It’s the only one anybody has been able to buy for the last three months while animal crossing has been selling millions. Soon half the user base won’t even be able to connect it to a TV.

It’s like the old third pillar. They couldn’t say “our new handheld is so good that we don’t need a home console anymore, just a dock” because they’d look like twats if it went all Wii U on them. Now that they’ve sold millions they can drop that.
