PlayStation 5 - Next gen is expensive

Both the new machines will be launching in the middle of full Brexit: Yes, we really mean it now season and the pound will be worth less than cat litter by that point. If either console is priced lower than the Euro cost in Sterling both Sony and Microsoft are being incredibly generous.

Not least because when we go on WTO no deal terms the import cost to the UK will go through the roof.

But maybe we can get a blue PS5 now we're out of the EU. :quote:

https://www.eurogamer.net/articles/2020-06-19-cyberpunk-2077-ps4-will-get-day-one-patch-to-work-on-playstation-5

Cyberpunk will work on PS5 at launch, will get an enhanced patch and the full PS5 version (which looks like it will be a long way off) will also be free to people who own the PS4 version.

Unclear whether this is CDPR doing their own thing or Sony having a full on Smart Delivery equivalent.

It’s called Cross Buy. They’ve had it since the PS3.

I don’t know if that’s how CDPR are doing it but it’s the feature on the PSN store for doing this.

(The free cross-platform versions; no idea how next gen patches will work.)

Given Sony chose not to use Cross Buy for some of their own cross-gen games, like LBP3 and MLB The Show, I’d like to hear something from them about it on PS5.

It’s probably good for the publishers too. This is just my theory, but I’ll bet plenty of Xbox 360 and PS3 owners put off buying cross-gen games because they wanted the “better version”, then either got that version at a steep discount a year or two later or didn’t buy it at all.

Bundling both versions together means more full-price launch day sales, and all you’re losing is extra sales to the few people who would’ve double-dipped on the game. (Again, probably at a big discount years later.)

If you just google "PlayStation 5 price" There's loads of stories of an Amazon France price leak.

The PS5 Disc version listed at €499 and the Digital Edition at €399. It was quickly taken down.

Might just be placeholder prices. But yes please at that price.

£400 / £450 mibbies?

I wonder if either maker would put a daft price in and encourage a smaller retailer to leak just to throw the rival off the scent.   Obviously not something they can do with Amazon.

Truthfully launch price makes no difference to me, I am getting a PS5 (I have zero interest in the Xbox there is nothing except Forza that interests me from MS first party games) if it priced too high at launch say £599 then I will just wait, anything around £449 and I will buy on release.

I just need to know what launch games are coming out so I can decide if I want to get Fifa or PGA.

The only time I can remember something like this happening is when a bunch of normally extremely reliable Apple sources started reporting the same rumours that the Apple Tablet would cost just $999 at a time when PC tablets were usually more expensive than that. Of course it was only $499. Apple had (it is generally assumed) very carefully manipulated its leaks community in to setting a price in people’s minds that they were able to dramatically undercut.

But I don’t think you could do that with a competitor and with so much public knowledge of the hardware components. Sony and Microsoft almost certainly know how much each other’s consoles cost to make, have access to smarter business intelligence than us, and will not be easily swayed by internet scuttlebutt.

I predict £499 and £429.

That still makes it the most expensive mainstream console ever released so I can't see it being more.

If they're feeling partially fruity then £399 for the diskless version would really throw that cat amongst the pigeons.

Then £449 for the Series X with MS taking a bit of a hit to get the numbers up. With a diskless lower specced Series S announced and on the way.

I still think that gamepass (and thus all the first party launch games) out the box makes a HUGE difference and MS will advertise the shit out of that in the build up. It's a crazy advantage and they need to make the most of it, particularly if they can make sure they have a good number of big mass appealing 3rd party titles on there as well.

By the time it launches we will be at equivalence between the pound and the euro - and that's without the 20% VAT we dump on top of it.

It will be the same (or more) in GBP than it is in EUR.

Agree Gamepass is a great idea & I hope Sony bring out something similar maybe even bundle it with thier PS Now offering to give us one subscription that will cover everything.

It won't. The GBP number will be lower than EUR. VAT rates are generally higher through the Eurozone than the UK.

The EU has generally higher VAT than the UK . I think it will have parity eur-gbp.

I measured my IKEA TV cabinet and it’ll just fit, although it’ll take a whole shelf itself. I reminds me of my Dad’s first generation Sky decoder box- gigantic, ugly, but with the power to let me experience awesome stuff you’d never see normally. It’s atrocious. I need it.

'Just fit' - think of the heat! This thing needs space to breath...

It’s fine, I’ve taken the back of the cabinet off, I’ll take the shelf out, and I’ll drill some speed holes in the top of it.

Excuse me!, Would you mind if I try fitting the PS5 in your new Äpplapploprö AV unit before I buy?

No problem...

So, much as I despise the look of the thing, I’m already warming to the idea of letting a launch PS5 in my house.

And it’s entirely because of my growing excitement for SW Squadrons and a hopefully reasonable expectation that the PS5 version will give the PSVR mode a nice resolution and shinies boost.

God damn it.
