PlayStation 5 - Next gen is expensive

This is why I’m pretty sure they don’t mean user customisable:

Perhaps more interestingly, MacLaurin also hints at custom hardware designs for the PS5 in the future that will go beyond what we’re used to with the PS4

So if you buy the white one, it could be you're stuck with one side always being white, while the other can be a different colour? Blimey.

This is all conjecture . My guess there won’t be user customisable options .

I kinda hoped it would be huge to avoid cooling issues - my own PC is basically a big box of glass where the entire thing is on display so made as neat as possible so size isn't an issue but the clash of the white on black is still so odd to me. Just wish they confirmed an all black for release because I know I'll be an impatient shit and buy the astrobot combo

If by ‘custom hardware designs’ they mean a completely redesigned box, then I’m all for it!

It'll be like the Raspberry Pi!

You get the motherboard and the gubbins on it, and you can build it into whatever the hell you want :D

I’m quite curious as to what makes it more customisable than previous ones. Does the new cooling system give them more flexibility in the hardware layout? The previous PlayStation revisions’ shapes were heavily dictated by where the air and fans went. (If you’ve wondered why the PS4 Slim USB ports are so far apart, it’s because the system fan is directly behind that part of the case.)

Surely they just mean the sideplates/polo shirt collars?

Maybe they mean you can design your own console outer casing like you can with the Xbox Controllers. Would be a nice touch where you could choose the colour, have your name engraved on it, maybe even be able to order Spiderman/Horizon Zero Dawn editions straight off?

I hope they do custom plates- Sony could have made a mint selling replacement HDD bay and headphone side plates for a decent mark-up. Just laser-etch £3 worth of moulded plastic. Never happened.

Yup.  With customisations being such a big thing in stuff like COD, Apex Legends, Fortnite etc I'm suprised no ones taken advantage of it for consoles.   The controller move by MS was good. I genuinely thought they'd all move to consoles next with faceplates etc.  Nice markup like you say!

You’re bringing back memories of wrapping my Xbox in a towel and trying to make it go supernova.

And the horror of having an intermittent RROD and the lady in GameStation telling me if it didn’t do it when I brought it in she wouldn’t give me a new one.

I get that but when you look at the One X, very powerful at the time, really small and fucking silent... it doesn’t make for a good comparison.

Really though, the design of the box doesn’t matter. It looks awful but by the time the thing comes out we’ll be used to it/won’t care. My major issue with the PS4 has been with how loud it is. If this is quiet, then all good.

Mine absolutely is. Not a peep.

How long have you had it? Mine seemed silent enough at first but as time went by it got noisier abs now when under load with a graphically intense game it’s really quite loud.
