PlayStation 5 - Next gen is expensive

Sony don't make game codes available for resell at all now, I think. You can buy credit from the usual places, but not games. So the best deals are normally to get like £50 of credit from CD Keys for £42 or something like that.

So then you're either paying over the odds at launch or waiting for a sale. The Last of Us 2 is £55 on the Store, so I guess that's like an extra £5, or maybe a little more, over the disc retail price? And some places will discount a bit more? But if you pick up your credit discounted, which you clearly should, it's not so far away.

Who said they forgot? His argument was they designed the console to be discless first, and then made the one that makes them less money the uglier one deliberately.

Well that's a load of rubbish too!

There always seems to be some PSN credit discounted somewhere, Shopto and doing it at the moment which you can pick up Last of Us Part 2 for £47.70 digitally which isn't that much different that physical.

I’m guessing non-disc £399.99, disk £499.99.

I would bet on this being close to what it’ll be but I’d not be sure on such a gap between the two “SKU’s”

non-disc £399

disc £479

I think this is likely what Sony has done here, they made the disc-less console better-looking and the drive awkwardly bolted on the standard version, in order to gently nudge people towards digital-only. It’s a long game strategy. If the difference between the two is £100-150 people will question how much they need that drive, and resign themselves to a digital future.

If it digital is £400-450 and the the drive version is over £500... yeesh.

Shit move if they did it, but within buying three games you can trade back in, you've 'made your money back' in a sense. If digital games were cheaper, they may have a case but they're not and you end up paying whatever Sony want you to and not being able to shop around.

I'd happily go digital only but with no drive there needs to be a really good way to move your PS4 physical games to digital ones.

Maybe hook up the PS4 (with a disc in it) to the PS5 and then there's some connection to PSN that allows for data transfer and license activation.

Or something...

Do discs have individual 'keys'? If not, then you could hand your copy of the game to 20 other people so they can get the digital copy free.

Hence the last two words in my post "or something..."

Nintendo manage to only allow people to redeem the gold coins once on a cartridge but I guess that's because something gets written to it.

Am I the only one who buys their digital games when they’re on sale, which is reliably about 50% off within the first 3 months?

The few that I get physically I am so hyped about I want to hold on to forever though, or get as gifts, and it would be a shame to lose that option.

I figure revision 2 will either be physical only or digital only and will actually look like it was designed that way.

Don't get me wrong, I'm all for it as I have loads of PS4 disc games that I'd love to convert to digital.

Sony patented something like this before the PS4 came out, with NFC tags in the disks or something. It’s how Nintendo let you claim stars on Switch cards too, unique codes. So it’s not out of the question.

I think Project Ten Dollar showed that was a pointless pain in the arse though.

Have they revealed what the “DualSense battery is very low” indicator will look like, as that’s what I’ll be looking at most of the time?

Surely it’ll work like the PS4, just a dashboard pop up a generous eight seconds before you’re out of charge.

It would be nice if the light bar lit up green, yellow or red when it first woke up to tell you if it was >50%, >25% or <25%. But they could have already done that.

Looking at the handful of PS4 games I own I could actually go digital quite easily.

I'm making a mountain out of a molehill.

Just looked on PSN and right now my physical games have a digital RRP of just over £200.

Rock Band 4 being the most expensive at £49.99!! A few games I own physically have been given away on PS+ (TLOU, Uncharted Collection) so I've saved a bit there but playing these relies on maintaining the subscription.

Has there ever been a rational explanation of why new digital releases are so expensive? To keep retail happy?

Because with far less physical cost and a digital only console it will become far harder to justify. And whilst Id love a digital only library the cost difference is enough to put me off and get the one with the drive.

I think it’s more likely to be £479 vs £439.

or they could be alot closer but offer you one year ps plus Membership as well as 1 year ps now And maybe some regular monthly ps store discounts like 5% off ps5 games pre orders etc

because with digital they are the only game in town - you want digital? you buy from them. Monopoly. When physical sales die it won't really change.

That’s how I purchase my digital games too. PSN sales have become increasingly good value over this generation I’ve found. In the latest one I picked up Days Gone, Hitman 2 and Metro Exodus all for around £15 each and RE7 for £8. Can’t argue with those prices and pretty much all my digital library has been purchased when the games are around that point.

The only games I purchase at full price and therefore get physical copies of are big multiplayer titles that I have to be there day one for like Battlefield and the mega-hyped blockbusters that I cant wait for like Red Dead Redemption 2. For this reason I would have to go for the disc drive version of the PS5 because I can’t trust that Sony would suddenly magically drop initial games prices on PSN down to £45 from the insane £60 or so they currently go for. If they somehow did then beautifully symmetrical digital version PS5 all the way.

Not sure about PlayStation but according to Brad Sams each Xbox disc has a unique identifier and Microsoft were at some point, and possibly still are, working on a scheme to allow people to trade in their in exchange for a download code or maybe have it added directly to your account.

I think this was used for Cross-Buy games on the PS3. You could redeem your Vita copy only once from each disc.

Depends how much you shop around for discounts, I think. I've recently pre-ordered Cyberpunk for £39.30. It's £59.99 digital. Even with discounted credit (assuming £42 for £50), you're still paying over the odds by a tenner.

Even that is expensive. I normally pay about £35-£40 for new releases on disk.

Of course, digital only is all well and good until there's an issue like the one I'm having now with Uncharted 4.

I own physical version, want to buy a digital copy but can't. PS store tells me it isn't available because I own multiplayer currency for the game.

Apparently this was an issue when the game was on PS+ (which I missed) but surely it shouldn't be now I want to pay actual money for it.

So yeah, digital great until there's an issue.

Hopefully with the digital only version being released we start to see retailers seeking digital codes for games which they can then discount. There have been some great digital bargains from the likes of cdkeys on Xbox this gen for example.

I’ve moved to mainly digital to reduce clutter. I miss having the option to resell but feel like that’s offset by buying a lot cheaper to begin with. A key or single-use code to pass a game I’ve finished on to someone on my friends list would be a cool option.

Think Cyberpunk is a game I’d consider buying new just because it looks so damn good, but more likely content to wait now lockdown has built the habit of clearing my backlog (with the odd £6-15 bargain in sales)

Fairly sure I’ll end up getting the digital PS5 but doubt it’ll be in the first six months. That aside hoping PS+ evolves to at least compete with Gamepass, that’s probably the reveal I’m most interested in next.

I won't get Cyberpunk at launch, not because I'm not excited to play it - but because I'll want to wait for it to get comprehensively patched first. Anyone playing a game like Skyrim or Witcher or Cyberpunk at launch is likely paying a premium to be a beta tester IMHO.

it’s just the likes of us generally that are aware of these cheaper credit deals.  Normal people who aren’t into gaming as much will buy the disc less version becuase it’s cheaper and then either get a subscription or just buy a few games off the store direct.  Ker-ching.  Can’t blame them. Every business is out to maximize profit.

yeah.  I’d be a very happy man if Sony has a subscription service for its first party games. Ps now +.

Don’t get me started on this. Days Gone ties your save to an unique code on the disk. So if you repurchase the game physically or initially borrowed a copy you can’t access your old save.

8 flat out exclusives announced at the begining , very positive.

Truth be told this console could look like a burglar shat on my tv and it wouldn’t matter if Sony keep bringing the first party games.

Personally I think this entire generation has been floated by Sony counter balancing the industry with games I want to play, against some overly popular free to play stuff I don’t
