Your Sony Exclusives should maybe include their Console Launch Exclusives - they're really meaningful around launch. At the same time, I'd ignore the fact that all of them are also playable on PC, because the overlap between people who've PS5-level powerful enough PCs who are also looking at a launch PS5 must be tiny.

dunno. Any release to pc is going to scale with the hardware present. I seriously doubt they’d releE to of and say 2060 nvidia and 12 core CPU’s only.

encouraging to see more games come to PC. I’m liking the choice.  Choice is good.

Looking at this image, it’s either wrong to base it on the disc slot (the PS5 could have a longer opening for some reason) or the PS5 controller is pretty hefty in size as well.

Magen the controller was revealed wasn’t there some noise around it being a bit chunky?

Get with the hype man, ffs , demon souls 4K  !!!

Is it confirmed 4K?  Someone in the other thread points it had a performance mode and a frame rate mode. Or something like that.

So.  Question.  There are high quality trailers available that are being posted on some of the dedicated game threads. Much higher quality than the 1080p 30fps show that we got.   There was a comment around it not being any higher than that dude to home working and how long it would take to cut it together.    But the whole show was just a series of video clips put together and streamed at a certain time.   That doesn’t tie up with the much higher res videos in the game threads.  What’s the deal behind that?

Could be more a streaming issue with millions of people watching something at the same time?

Edit: Fuck me 7 million people were watching it.

What games do float your boat these days? I'm perfectly happy for folks to rag on most games because I'm a selfish sod and if I like something I'm more than happy and don't really care much about what other folks' hate or love.

But I'm genuinely interested in what's on your playlists!

I’m playing Animal Crossing and PUBG at the moment, as well as some Minecraft. From the announcement, Stray was my favourite, and I also really enjoyed the Square Enix teaser, and the Capcom one. Excited to play Resi 3 and Death Stranding when they’re a bit cheaper. Number one most anticipated game is Elden Ring. Favourite game of the last few years is probably Breath of the Wild. I’m much more concerned about satisfying mechanics and difficulty than story or graphics, and I value innovation over polish. I think GTA3 is one of the best games ever made, so much so that I did replay it a bunch of times with slightly better controls and ever increasing cutscenes, but I feel in recent years I’ve become detached from triple A games, and the racism, sexism and violence have started to bother me more. I’ve also done a few writing courses and am a bit of a wang about story structure and a massive snob about movies and TV, so I find game stories pretty unsatisfying.

This is from Eurogamer

What happens when Sony doesn't actually give any real details on the contents of the machine or a price? People across the internet lose their shit on the actual look of the thing you won't spend longer than 2 minutes caring about once it has powered on and you are playing it.

I mean, look at all of them, they ALL look shit!

(The PS3 is the worst of the bunch though).

The intro to that is probably the funniest thing Digital Foundry have ever done.

I was thinking it seems odd that a sort of side project/expansion thing like Spiderman: Miles is seemingly their launch game. Makes me wonder what else they've got in the pipeline that maybe COVID has made them less confident about having out at launch.

I'm hoping they do a hardware deep dive soonish and talk about the console UI, features and importantly - PS5 enhancements to PS4 games. I don't have a PS4 anymore, so enhancements to games like Ghost of Tsushima would be great.

I genuinely like it. Good on them for doing something different. It might take a while but it will grow on you. Well, it will after a few months when they release an all black one. But seriously folks,  I like it, I do. My only worry is the wife mistakenly switching it on and off again when the WiFi isn’t working.

Reassuring to know that I’m in agreement with Mr Leadbetter - not revealing the price was a mistake and, as a chance to show off the future of interactive entertainment, the Sony presentation just didn’t do enough; first and foremost it wasn’t the appropriate forum to showcase indie titles; it was poorly served by a 1080/30fps stream and; for those games that really were cutting edge, they suffered from a lack of overt explanation of the next gen vision of each game.

With the mixed messaging introduced by the first point and the technical limitation of the second, Sony could hardly expect the audience to be able to discern the generational leap in power the PS5 should represent.

Quite apart from the questionable hardware reveal and the bizarre GTA 5 lead promo, it was a weird and disappointing event.

So is that a thunderbolt port at the front of the PS5?

I guess you could plug in a VR headset with just one cable and no stupid power brick or hdmi thingy right? Obviously not till release one but that would be a massive plus but a Usb c or whatever would power the entire unit including screen.

Yes. But that’s the odd thing.  It didn’t need to be a steaming thing right?  YouTube can handle lots of 4K videos going out to people at once so why not upload it to various video platforms and then “unlock” it. What was live about the reveal that needed for it to be streaming?

also for all the trumpeting about GTA5 being something familiar that gamers can play on their new console etc.

1) This "remaster" isn't out til next year

and

2) I thought PS5 was BC with most PS4 titles so doesn't everyon who owns GTAV get to play it on their new console anyway?

It is just such an odd announcement to lead with.

So odd I’m convinced there’s some psychological intent. Like it’s juxtaposing the ‘best’ (mainstream) of this gen against the far superior first offerings of next’s.

I’m currently caught up to page 204 of 212 in this thread, at the point where people are comparing disc slot sizes with the XBOX (Series X?)

I don’t follow Xbox news so I haven’t seen this machine before, but how come the disc slot on it appears to be on the top of the machine? Implying it has to be at least as deep as it is wide... so is that thing actually shaped like a big chunky cube?

My first reaction to the PS5 was “dear god...” then on seeing the digital version I was like “ahhh, ok - when was the last time I bought a disc anyway”. After some thought I’ve realized that without a drive I would lose the ability to play Blurays (which I don’t watch but my kids sometimes get them from friends etc) and any backwards compatibility with original PS discs would also be stuffed. Then considering that the machine just sits in my TV stand and I don’t look at it, I think I would actually go for the fugly version.

Concerned about the size though. If it doesn’t fit in my AV cabinet then it can F off. That said, the photo comparison did not seem accurately sized based on the controllers (unless the Xbox controller has tiny buttons and sticks).

The Xbox is basically a pair of cubes stacked on one another.

interesting SSD article:

https://www.anandtech.com/show/15848/storage-matters-xbox-ps5-new-era-of-gaming

Takeaways:

- Sony are doing something really interesting.

- How often will they be requesting a sufficient number of files simultaneously to really max out these things?

- That 825GB may well be 750GB usable space in old money after standard provisioning ratios are applied (12*64GiB/(1000/1024) = 824 decimal GB , then  about 10% reserved for SSD management), less once the OS is taken into account. The 825 starts to make sense because they can spread more widely across chips, and use cheaper rather than more expensive flash to meet their performance target.
