PlayStation 5 - Next gen is expensive

I suspect it is Spiderman's 'Infamous: First Light' - a standalone but one that uses most of the same assets as the first game. That's probably to be expected as I couldn't see how they could knock out another full game in time for launch. I don't really have a big problem with that, personally. First Light was meaty enough to stand on its own.

Just saw this. Horizon and Spiderman were the highlights for me, plus Resi but I presume Resi will be on every console going. So you get GTAV free and installed at launch, plus something about a million credits per month with ps+?? Whatever. Ghost wire looked interesting too and the cat thing where all the robots are sentient Apple II’s.

I can only think Rockstar either paid for it, or it was in exchange for some exclusivity or something, because opening your presentation for your next console with a 7-year-old game a lot of people will have already bought twice would be really fuckin' stupid otherwise. Especially when people are eagerly awaiting for a sequel of that game, or even any game from Rockstar. Free access to an online game that most people don't care about was hardly a draw either.

My pet theory is still that was supposed to be a GTA6 trailer and it wasn't ready.

Christ, even a two second teaser would have been acceptable if it’s anywhere near ready.

If they're releasing GTAV next-gen-next-gen edition in fall 2021, you'll be waiting a while till GTA VI. For one thing, you need one hell of an install base or sell through to hit 80-100 million units, which is what T2's investors will be looking for.

It wasnt even revealed that Demon Souls Remastered was an exclusive to PS5.

Im curious if there will be any exclusive AAA titles at launch. Much like the XSX its going to be cross platform stuff

Seemed to be a different tone to the presentation - a welcome one - where there was notably less game footage of people going "fuck you motherfucker" and blowing someone's head off with a shotgun. Even Hitman was comparatively restrained. I'm sure the games are as violent as ever, it's just the highlights reel of gory death to the backdrop of a whooping crowd (like it was some sort of serial killer convention) always seemed a bit off so I'd be glad to see them moving away from that.

Can you tell us a little bit about the PS5's design, because at first glance it looks more like something that you would find in the furniture section of a store rather than its consumer electronics zone?

The PlayStation sits in the living area of most homes, and we kind of felt it would be nice to provide a design that would really grace most living areas. That's what we've tried to do. And, you know, we think we've been successful in that.

"What's that noise like a plane taking off in my living area?"

"Ah, that's just that thing there trying to find a multiplayer game in a lobby screen on Call of Duty 17..."

I thought that. I think the gender balance went completely the other way, and while it smacks a bit of a knee jerk reaction to things (understandable), it was certainly no testorsorne filled, "get me a sitrep" type yawn-fest. I'm in favour of that.

GTA Online is a license to print money and putting it out on a new system which won’t have that many games at launch will help keep the player numbers healthy. I doubt they are even working on a. GTA6

It's not coming at launch, it's coming a year into the consoles life.

We're going to have to post this for every user who's catching up, aren't we?

The digtal version is interesting, and certainly illustrates a level of confidence.

I'm still firmly on the physical side though, for a number of reasons...

1) Price difference is still ridiculous between the two, and still no real choice on who you buy it digitally from, so prices remain fairly uncompetitive

2) I can sell my pile of shame

3) I can borrow someone elses pile of shame

4) It will have a 4K Blu-Ray film player in it. Possibly my first steps into 4K

Point 4) is really only an issue if you like films. Streaming and digtial services offer a very poor selection on films, and they are all in Dolby Digital 5.1 lossy. As a film lover, disc wins and continues to win, until they pull the plug on physical discs. Then you will have to have a subscription to Disney+, Sony Online, Univeral Online, Warner Online etc. etc. and the likes of Netflix picking up the outsiders, to get your film fix, and that doesn't sound like fun to me.

Why would they make GTA6? They’re making more than they ever have from single player games churning out boring cars for GTAO for what must be a fraction of the cost. Why would they make a new full game?

Then either don't show anything, or just display the logo to acknowledge its existence. That would have been enough to satisfy most people. Besides, GTA VI is reportedly still only in early development, so don't expect it anytime soon.

It's GTA Online that's free, and it's only free for three months.

There’s generally only one vehicle with crazy properties every few updates though, the vast majority of what they add are sports cars and clothes that don’t really add anything to gameplay, with the occasional delorians and rocket bikes.

The GTA thing really annoyed me. It’s so lazy and greedy. Couldn’t they at least have made some DLC - or a new game in the same environment?

Yep, given Microsoft has been really pushing the buy once get next gen upgrade free thing, Sony opening with a game where you don't get that makes it seem like they won't be following.

You never know, pigs might start flying and everyone who owns the thing currently might get the upgrade for free...
