PlayStation 5 - Next gen is expensive

The PS5 exclusive stuff I'm interested in:

Demon's Souls Remastered

Stray

Little Devil Inside

And other stuff:

Resi VIII

Hitman III

Pragmata

Solar Ash

Trouble is, none of the exclusive stuff is out at launch, so I guess I can hold off for a while.

One thing that I did notice is the lack of any exclusive arcade drivers at all for the PS5. No Motorstorms, DriveClub etc. OK there was that demolition derby game but nothing else. Have Sony given up on this genre completely now? Guess the third parties could pick up the slack but an odd omission. Nothing to counter the Forza Horizon games....

What did everyone else think of the trailer for Life is Strange: Furry Edition, that 2D visual novel-looking game with all those teenage dinosaur...things sat around in class rooms, playing the drums and stuff? I didn't catch the name of it. Suffice to say it's not one that grabbed me. I thought it was an odd choice of game for a console reveal.

Yeh Godfall looked awful so another reason not to give gearbox any cash is always welcome.

They don;t half come out with some stinkers.

Godfalls art work for the swords and armour and enemies etc has that world of Warcraft flavour. It looks like a game that’s taken 7 years to make and due to be released in 2009.

Godawful as a someone said earlier.

The developers all seem proud as punch of their “cinematic” trailers.

But I think they dont understand gamers don’t want to see “pre rendered looking” cinematics (which look no better than anything we have seen since the ps3’s trailers/cut scenes) we want actual gameplay.

Otherwise it’s just marketing fluff that ironically doesn’t show much difference between gens. I know it’s early doors, but only ratchet and clank seemed to get this.

horizon 2 looked beautiful, but is both clearly years off, and a target pre render.

I've no idea how the current VR setup works on the PS4, but will it work on the PS5, or will that be a brand new hardware revision and outlay?

The previously said it'll work on PS5.

Oh man, shall I buy the “obviously the original design” version or the “growth on the side” edition.

If I worked for Sony I'd suggest letting PS4 owners register their discs online for redownload, allowing them to sell their PS4s to help fund the upgrade without losing their libraries.

I’m feeling much more positive after a bit of time and watching some of the trailers again.

Jeez I mean a new Resi (with heavy resi 4 vibes) Demon’s Souls, Rachel and Clank, Horizon 2, GT7 and Spider-Man 2 (or 1.5 at least).

Not to mention a bunch of new games that people moan we don’t get enough of. Kira looked amazing. (It’s always hard to get excited about new IP though I guess)

Fairplay to Sony for putting them front and centre as it’s clear a lot of those were indies or mid budget titles.

All in all, with a bit of time to reflect I think it was a pretty good show despite some heavy mis-steps like starting with GTAV.

Obviously the console is still gross though.

Every generation needs a wow moment, like when you had a Spectrum and saw an Amiga for the first time.  Or when you had an Amiga and saw a Playstation.  But as systems become more powerful, the leap in tech gets smaller between each generation.  The weird part today is that in order to give that visual improvement, you probably need a new TV.

Back in 2006 I remember older family members saying they couldn't see the difference in the new 720p HD ready TVs and again when 1080p became the norm. I was surprised by this because it's obviously different and better.  But with 4K I myself don't see the difference and HDR seems a much more significant than 4K. But HDR is not enough for me to junk my current TV which has fantastic picture quality.

By this stage in the previous generation, everyone I know had HD, which in turn meant that when they got a 360 or PS3 it was visibly better than what had gone before. I also recall being blown away by Dead Rising , the sheer number of zombies on screen. Here was what the games industry needs at a next gen launch - a game you couldn't do on your current console with new shiny HD graphics.

The decision to do yesterday's stream in 1080p at 30fps was a mistake. Because not only did it make most of the stuff look like PS4, but it reminded me that in order to really see the benefit of PS5, it's going to require the purchase of a new TV. It didn't help when they started the show by reminding us how great GTA5 looks on a base PS4.  I don't especially want a 4KTV and only know 2 people that do have one.  I'm happy with what I have and expect to get a few more years out of it.

Watching the stream last night reminded me of when I saw a shop demoing the 360 with Dead or Alive on an SD telly. They're trying to make you buy a new console on the strength that it's so much better than what you have, and frankly it just didn't look any different to what we already have.  So I'm thinking that the PS4 will have a much longer tail than we are used to, and at least for a while the PS5 will be the system that's on sale in John Lewis next to the £1500 OLED TVs, and owned by wealthy people who buy a iPhone every year whatever, and the PS4 will remain mass market.  I therefore confidently predict that the PS5 will be aiming to attract that Apple crowd and will launch at £599.  One day, everyone will have a new TV and the console will be £299 and then it will replace PS4, but for now it's all about the affluent, because nothing I saw yesterday made me NEED to upgrade.

There was a fair amount of gameplay in stuff like Ghost Wire, Kira, GT7 and Project Athia too though.

You mean introduce Microsoft’s 2013 vision of how disks work, but retroactively in 2020 to support backwards compatibility that Sony are sure people don’t want for a one off transition?

Yeah, not happening.

I know it's not happening and that's my point. If I could transfer my games over I might be tempted by the digital while my PS4 still has a bit of value.

I guess there's more USB ports on the back; only one on the front will be a bit annoy9ng for fighting games. Assuming pals will be allowed to come over before PS6 is out.

Aye, they seem to be thinking we'll all be using the C for new controllers and regular for legacy ones, when it's far more likely to be two of a kind. But then the SX only has one port on the front, so that needs an extension for convenience as well.

I went to bed feeling a bit meh about this and on reflection I’m not buying this for at least 2-3 years into its cycle like I did with my PS4.

Sat under my tv I’ve got a PS4 and a new to me wii u. I have un completed Spider-Man, HZD, BOTW, death stranding, yakuza 0, Kiwami, sotc, doom, Titanfall 2, stacks of amazing driving games. Heck the even game me the uncharted collection and UC4 is the only game I’ve completed for years.

maybe I’m just too old. Maybe I’m not the target market. It all looks the same. It all looks like what has gone before. There’s no buzz for me just never shinier versions of what I’ve seen countless times. Nothing original. Nothing I would want to buy this for. Nothing that made me feel the way I felt when I saw the PlayStation and the amazing th in ha coming out of Japan from namco. Nothing like seeing Nintendo’s best newness.

Maybe it’s the internet and the format. These days it’s just here’s a bunch of videos playing trailers and a person talking with some or spiel and I don’t think doing it in a big venue with cheering whooping clapping men is any better either.

maybe I’m more jaded and the younger me pre YouTube and live conferences who poured over magazine news each month on the latest news from the far east and the amazing developments in the 90s and early 2000s.

The marketing formula they have works I guess with ready made free additional advertising form the reaction videos and commentary provided to keep the masses talking about what is really pretty dull.

Finally I guess the way it looks is the most interesting thing about the whole reveal. When all the games look the same as what we have seen over the past 5-8 years at least the aesthetics has people talking.

You saved me having to write this exact thing. I utterly agree.

I started to think I’m just a jaded old gamer and my passion was gone but maybe I’m not because if Nintendo showed me a 20 second trailer for pikmin 4 or mario galaxy 3 I’d be giddy as hell!

i just thought the games looked utterly bland and declaring it to be the biggest generational leap didn’t really mask the fact that most of the games looked like bad PS4 games.

The only point that I got excited was when I saw astrobot but then realised it wasn’t VR and so that made it completely pointless to me.

astrobot and wipeout in VR on PS4 were the most thrilling and fun gaming experiences I’ve had since playing Mario 64 and ridge racer for the first time

I'm with @Bangaio & @beakbeak too

Nothing here looks 'wrong' or 'bad', it's me that's moved on and this will be the first generation of Playstation and Xbox that I sit out at launch. It's simply a matter of none of the games appealing to me anymore, and I'm not sure they can do much about that as their core audience want games I have no interest in now as an old git just past 50.

I know the only thing I'd get value from and actually use now would be new Nintendo hardware, and that's cos it means new Nintendo games, which I still love.

I'll continue to watch with interest as would love to see something that gave me an excuse to buy one, but at present just can't see it.

I’m with you and it’s ironic because I sat through that thinking the whole thing looked like it was aimed at kids and yet Nintendo is all I play these days.

Which brings me to the real problem, Astro Bot isn’t Mario, Horizon isn’t Zelda, and so on. And Ratchet & Clank was always staid and boring.

But it has Demon’s Souls so not all is lost, but it should really have been Demon’s Souls II, considering all the shite remasters we’ve suffered this gen it’s unforgivable they didn’t give us Demon's on PS4 and now expect us to buy a new console for it.

I thought it was a pretty clever thing to highlight. Promotes the backwards compatibility a bit better.

But it's not a backwards compatible version is it! It's a separate game entirely.
