Are there any circumstances where this is not the case? £599 is fully mental and I am willing to stake PeteBrant's reputation on it being nowhere near that.

I'm not saying £599 will happen - I'm just saying it wouldn't shock me and would genuinely be good value for what is under the hood of it. 8 core 16 thread 7mm CPU - NVME 1TB SSD - GPU with equivalents on the market today being approx £500 plus alone - good cooling solution etc. Both the consoles are pretty fucking awesome pieces of tech - they'll result in better game experiences at the the expense of higher costs out of the gate. I'm super happy they've invested in better tech out of the gate but it would be a miracle for it to be considered "cheap"

Hadn't thought about how you cool expansion PCI4.0 SSDs running at 5GB/s:

That's some serious heat sinking, and makes me wonder how "commodity" such disks will really be to work with a PS5.

They've said only certain models will be compatible. so almost commodity.   I'm sure that there'll be a model or two we'll all end up recommending to each other.

I am ready to buy one of these but £599 would definitely give me pause. That would change it from being something I buy just because it's new, to something I'd buy when an absolutely must have game arrived.

I don't think the PS5 will be £599 - £549 tops is what the market might tolerate at launch - just talking about what is under the bonnet for both will be pretty awesome value even at the £500 mark and based on paper the series x should cost more given it has a more powerful chipset

Yes £599 is above the norm. But in an age where people buy £1000 iPhones I see why MS and Sony might push it a bit especially considering how much the scalpers/opportunists will try and sell them on eBay for! Might actually cut this practice down a bit TBH.

Personally around £350 is my sweet spot but not planning on getting any new consoles at launch this time. Doing the sensible thing for a change and waiting for a game to get an actual release (in that I can buy and play it!) rather than buy on the basis of a 'Launch Window". I still remember the DriveClub fiasco. :) I'm not bitter in any way :D

Nah, it won't be £500, not in the current economic climate. I think £399.

Actually true. We don't know what economic state we'll be in when these things release! Although people still seem to find money for expensive luxury goods. :)

I'll go with £449. Undercut MS by £100 as I think they'll come in at £549.

Yeah, and give it a few months to discover any red ring of death scenarios.

That said, it comes down to killer apps - if they're there day one, it gets bought (goes for either machine).

There never is though anymore. PS4 I found a bit disappointing... Knack and Killzone? Ended up waiting a while playing ResoGun (great game) untill those launch window games started tricking through. Done with this bloody launch window rubbish this time :D Grumbly old man that I am... leaving the launch units to everyone else....

I know what you mean. Thinking back to SMW, SM64' Halo, it seems like a forgotten concept.

Miss those days :( Even original PlayStation had Riiiiidge Racer and Tekken. Saturn Virtua Fighter etc. Not sure how they get away without having a killer title these days....

Sounds like a plan!

Love new console reveals. Just hope they show it and some interesting games and concepts. Fingers crossed!

If you want a phone, there are alternatives to a £1000 iPhone. If you want to play a particular PS5 exclusive, there's only one choice.

I'll probably end up doing what I did with the PS4 and waiting for a couple of years until the first revisions to the hardware are out and the price drops a bit.

Yeah I like them too, it’s weird to think the last one was 7 years ago, the next one will be 2027 :o

True. Let's hope they show something compelling then! :)

Crikey scary. Only seems a short time ago I was queing for my 360 on launch morning. 15 YEARS AGO. Remember taking the day off work and spending most of it on PGR3 and strangely CoD2 first time I enjoyed a war based FPS game ran so well on the 360 too....

£599 is no mass market price.

iPhone comparisons are weak. Few pay £1000+ outright and monthly contracts are embedded with phones in the popular mindset. Not so with consoles.

People save though or stick it on an interest free credit card. Same difference. That's what I'd do if I wanted either at launch.

Don't think £550 is that bad in 2020? Paid £279 for my last launch console (360) in 2005. Factoring in inflation and the power of the new consoles seems reasonable.

Thing I've learned about rllmuk and numerous threads about prices is many posters are in the middle to top income brackets and overstimate what the mass market will pay. I remember it with PS3 and Xbox one. Elevated prices hurt both.

Above £500 is the kiss of death IMO

"but people pay £1000 for phones!!!"

yes they do. Over two years.

(also i think you'd have to be fucking mental to pay £1000 for a phone when there's a million alternatives out there - but there's only 1 PS5)

True. Also most of us are early adopters too.

But looking at prices people pay on eBay for launch consoles.... Guess this is only for a limited time though until stock builds up a bit!

It did 13 and 7 years ago respectively. They still did well enough though. PS3 was hurt because most gamers had picked up a 360 to play with by the time PS3 got a release. IIRC it was a good year or so after the 360 got a release.

PS4 was cheaper and technically better than the XBO. Also MS buggered up the message before launch.

Anyhow let's wait and see....

This reveal tonight will have to show an exclusive of some real impact to sway me away from going for a series X next gen. As there's a good handful of games from the Xbox one that I really want to play (read as: upscaled viva piñata), and having them all on the gamepads is one hell of a temptation.
