PlayStation 5 - Next gen is expensive

Hopefully they have also moved away from the PS4 download and unpack method meaning that 40gb update needs something near double that to be installed. PS4 with a 500GB HDD is a pita. Can’t  see 50% more on a 5 being much better..

I could see auto-archival being an OS feature, but it isn't really a 'day one' problem. How many people are even going to own eight PS5 games within its first six months, for instance? Some people on here, sure, but we're outliers.

My hope is that game install sizes won't really get any bigger than the heights we're currently seeing. This might seem at odds with increased fidelity, but I think there's various mitigating factors such as:

  • SSDs meaning data doesn't need to be duplicated on the disk to reduce seek times.
  • More granular control of what is installed, e.g. only the audio track for your chosen language.
  • No need for hefty video files that are currently used to mask loading.

Part of my optimism stems from not really knowing why some contemporary games have as large a footprint as they do. Assassin's Creed Odyssey is more than twice as large as Horizon Zero Dawn, for instance, even though I'd say they're roughly comparable in terms of variety and quality of game assets.

Personally I'll have the policy of one in one out and get rid of my PS4 pro when/if I get a PS5, so most people who do the same will have a fairly sizeable bunch of games they can install day one. I'm 80/20 these days digital Vs disc.

They’ve done the analysis - most of the time 800-odd GB is enough to satisfy the vast majority of gamers playing habits. Ie they mostly play a handful of games over a rolling 2-4 week period

I'm sure.  We're not the vast majority of gamers though!

I haven't really been that interested in the next gen console rumours up until this point, but the I'm quite excited about this now. I've got a gaming PC already, plus a Switch, so I'll almost definitely be getting a PS5 over an Xbox Series X. If they announce full PS4 backwards compatibility, I might even sell my Pro after playing TLOU 2 to help fund a day 1 purchase.

Squeeeee :omg:

Bloke switches on webcam and sits in front of a bookcase.  The world tunes in expectantly. In the corner of our screens we can see there are 50 million people waiting for him to speak.

The man rises from his seat and mouths something.

50 million people yell, "your microphones on mute!"

He looks at the camera and pulls a puzzled expression.

"Your mic!  Your mic is on mute!"

The man gets a piece of paper and writes on it, "What"

His mum phones him. We see him answer his mobile, and he looks suprised.

He unclicks mute, but his video feed goes off.  We hear him say "what happened to the picture?"

His mum talks him through it, but somehow he's now logged himself out of his google account.  The video comes back on but the picture is very choppy.

We hear his exasperated mum through his phone handset telling him to go and sit nearer the router.

He unplugs his router in order to plug in the laptop (he's had it for years and the battery is shot).  The whole feed ends.

10 minutes later, after a phonecall to his son, he's up and running, and he's checked, everyone can see and hear him.

There is silence.  He makes his presentation.

"799" he says, and drops the mic and walks out of the bedroom.

I completely agree - most people will have a handful of games BUT PS4 backwards compatibility might be a huge use case for launch buyers

My current PC is SSD storage only which means it is 2.5TB - I'm using up about 2TB at the moment (so 500gb spare across the SDD's) which includes windows/normal windows apps like office etc/software and then around 30 installed games which is a mix of big AAA download heavy titles like Modern Warfare and a few smaller indie games. Honestly though they're on there out of laziness - I at most rotate 4-5 games at a time - the majority just sit there installed because meh

I think most people will be fine - it'll be heavy users who want a large mix of a library always instantly available who might feel a sting

I fully anticipate that if Horizon 2 is shown it will have the effect of blowing my balls off.

And my current balls are artificial, because the initial demo of Killzone 4 had the same effect back in the day.

Yeah, they mentioned this in the presentation, the way files will work on the PS5 SSD means that you will no longer need an update to be any larger than the data being replaced.

Hadn't thought about how you cool expansion PCI4.0 SSDs running at 5GB/s:

https://www.techspot.com/review/1893-pcie-4-vs-pcie-3-ssd/

That's some serious heat sinking, and makes me wonder how "commodity" such disks will really be to work with a PS5.

Marky Mark mentioned this in the presentation, that there wasn't a standard for the height of those drives, just the other dimensions, so as well as benchmarking them, they'd have to approve them as able to fit in to the bay. I didn't realise he meant that some were the size of a box of dominoes...

But if Microsoft can put a fairly similar HDD in basically a memory card surely this is solvable?

Everything is solvable. Microsoft's runs at half the speed though, so presumably doesn't generate the heat, and the surrounding cooling for the slot can be built around that proprietary card. It'll be interesting to see. I was surprised by the size of those heatsinks.

I just hope they've wheeled Cerny back into the basement and we get someone who knows how to present doing tonight's show.

Other than that, I'd love to see the console and get a price, but a strong lineup of games should enough to convince me I need one. I might even get both consoles at launch this time.
