Can't wait 😀  Real shame you can't drive @davejm, hope you'll be back for next week though!!

I'll be back in two weeks, as its the first mid-season break next week and I'm on holiday :)

Knee is feeling better each day that I wake up, but then gets worse as I go about my day... but today is a massive improvement.  Just gotta avoid the temptation of going in the rig, but I have new PC components coming tomorrow so there's going to be an enforced break of a few days before my holiday while I sort out my PC (I've got new components for my main PC, and shifting the motherboard and CPU from this into my media PC case which is empty at the moment; which I'll use as a server).

@Pockets I’ll try. Timing:

pitstop: in the setup on the Fuel/Strategy page there’s a box for setting up your preset planned stop(s). So you might fuel for the race with 50l and set stop 1 to be another 50l. Then maybe you set stop 2 as one with rain tyres just in case, if you like, but probably (haha) just 1 is enough this time.
While driving, you can cycle the MFD to your pitstop plan - you might deselect tyres as there’s not likely any need to change them in a 1 hour race and it takes a while to happen. You can also adjust the fuel amount to be put in, and select or deselect repairing damage and replacing brake pads. Again, in a race this short you shouldn’t need to do that last one. Obviously tweaking all this while driving at race speed is a barrel of laughs. Start thinking about it in time to do bits here and there on a straight, rather than all at once in a panic if you can. Ideally if you stick to the plan it’s just telling it not to bother with tyres and repairs.

I would recommend a little practice beforehand. By default a lot is automated, thankfully. On entry to pitlane you need to get your speed down and into first gear by the speed limit line so the automatic limiter cuts in. Cruise along to your box, which is helpfully highlighted, and try to stop in the right place. The ignition will switch off. The crew will then sort out your exact position if needed, jack you up and squirt some petrol in, etc, then jack down and send you on your way. The ignition comes on again automatically, do NOT go above first gear til you clear the speed limit line or you‘ll lose the limiter and get a drive-through penalty.

One thing to add for some of the more experienced drivers out there as well is that it can save quite some time in the pitstop to map your ignition and your starter to buttons on your wheel / keyboard (as long as its easily reachable). It will allow you to cut the engine while you roll into the pitbox and to restart it after the pitstop much more quickly. The basic process goes as follows:

1. While getting close to your designated pitbox, cut the engine by hitting the ignition button and just use the momentum to roll you into your final position.

2. During the pitstop, make sure to re-activate the ignition by hitting the button once (the ignition sign should then light up green)

3. With a few seconds to go in the pitstop, floor the throttle and keep the starter button pushed in. As soon as the pit crew lets you down, you will immediately restart the engine and keep rolling (again make sure ignition button is green, otherwise your engine will do nada).

I would recommend practicing this quite a few times beforehand, otherwise it might royally screw up your race but it can save you some valuable time in those close battles 😄

I really want to do that but I can't work out how to fit the buttons into my controls. Actually I really should be able to manage it with the shift function on the wheel, surely.

I've only got one button down there - well, one and a big ol' Xbox button that doesn't seem mappable in ACC. I have it on push-to-talk so I can threaten other drivers  chat to people during the evening's fun. Some experimenting needed, perhaps, although maybe not for tonight.

I also use buttons on the wheel for starter, ignition and pit limiter. But I've put a lot of other things on a tablet using SimDashboard, as some sort of digital button box. The app is also running on my phone, which sits in a holder on my wheel base where I can see my custom dashboard things and lots of other telemetry.

A lot of work to set up, but it pays off massively.

yeah, I'd do that if I was racing in 2D, but from VR a button box isn't really going to be useful and a touchscreen one even less so. Compromises, bah.

Oh yeah, I forgot it isn't handy at all in VR.

@milko, do you use the 'shift' function in the wheel controls setup? You sacrifice one button that acts a a secondary function switch and lets you map twice as many functions on the wheel's buttons (3 times if you count the option to hold a button). @SharkyOB pointed the function out to me the other day, and it has made everything much easier. Handy for VR users I'd imagine.

Yeah @Meers at the moment I've used shift to map the engine mode and TC to the dpad. I could probably set ignition and starter to two more I think, I'll just need to set aside some time to sort it out. I really should double-check I can't use the xbox guide button for something useful too really.

Ah right. 😄

I'm using the Xbox logo button on my Fanny P1 rim as a pit limiter (tap), ignition (shift-tap) and starter (hold).

cool. Is there any advantage to having the pit limiter as manual, or is that just for immersion/sim? It sounds like an extra accident waiting to happen, and I already have "trying to drive the car" for that :)

Immersion, mostly. It's 2nd nature now so I mess it up less these days than when I started using it. 😅

Is this through the steam app or in game? I know I use this feature a lot on my steam controller but never thought to see if it would work on the wheel.

In the game. It's a bit down the list on the right side in the controls menu.

My wheel's button config. There's still room for more mapping, but I also have a tablet with a digital button box (for the lesser-used functions like seat and FoV adjust, Engine mapping, etc), so it's not really needed to add more functions on the wheel.

Can you configure those tap/hold variations in ACC? I've not noticed that...

Yes, but not on all functions though. You'll notice an arrow on the right side of each function that allows for either a tap (which is the default action), hold (extended press) or shift button action.

Check this guide for more info.

The onboarding session with simracing.gp went well.  The platform itself offers the flexibility to do various championships or series; and you can do points adjustments (for fastest lap, pole position etc).  So if we did migrate over, things would translate without too much bother but with the benefit of being able to set up events much more easily and play the different games (AC, Raceroom, AMS2).

I've been told that practice servers are coming.; but that might be moot anyway if I can get a dedicated server setup at home.

So the only downsides would be as mentioned before:-

  • Racing with our real names (not bothersome to me, but would be less easy to know who's who!)
  • No access to the JSON results files (but that wouldn't be an issue as the website would track everything)

We get access to this for free through the beta period, and for a period of time afterwards.  And even when they do go-live and that free period runs down, if we choose to use it it's not more expensive than the current hosting provider (£12 a month currently).  But with no grid/slot size restriction.

I'll post a link shortly, once I've finished playing around.  In the meantime, can you register on https://beta.simracing.gp/ if you haven't already (it uses your Steam credentials).  I suggest we use next week's mid season break to test out the use of the platform.

Ahhh I didn't know on PC you can use the D-pad Click for something else! (on PS4 it was a shared function with the X button). Also didn't know about the shift thingie, thanks Meers!

Thanks for this Dave, I won't be around next week, but happy with all this.

Sounds good to me, Dave! And the real names thing isn't really an issue to me. Thanks for arranging this for us man.

No probs!

The shift special button option can be found a bit down the list though and looks like this:
