I also keep thinking my downshift paddle is sticking or not registering or something but it might be my technique - it seems fine when I stop and test it.

The cars have downshift protection, so it's likely you're just trying to shift down before you've scrubbed enough speed through braking.

GT3 have tyre blankets, that's why they're green when you come out of the pits; though they're still not up to optimum for a couple of laps obviously.

I did not know that! Interestingly, I've just been lead to the 2019 Pirelli guidance for GT3s in the Blancpain series and they specify that the target pressure is 29psi for the 2019 tyres.

I bought the Thrustmaster Open Wheel rim.  It's smaller so it feels like I can throw it around the corners a bit more, and my thumbs are in easier reach of the buttons (compared to my round Ferrari rim).  But whether it really helps with performance, I'd be skeptical.

It's not that hard to sort out, check my little guide from a page or so ago. The colour isn't as important as the pressure, and unfortunately your mechanics don't adjust the pressure for the track temps so you have to do it yourself. Once you've done it a few times it gets fairly quick to work out. You'll usually find each tyre needs a different starting pressure for them all to come up to 27.5ish together after a few laps. If you're using the Safe preset this is the only important thing you need to work out. They'll come green for temp pretty quickly anyway unless they're way outside the pressure they should be. When you do have the tyre pressure for a given track and temperature sorted, save it with a descriptive filename (Spa Dry 18C for example) and you can use it again later. If the temps go up, you can start here and adjust pressure down to match, and so on.

Man, this Spa track is a mix of amazing and frustrating. I can't work out if it's me being shit (99% chance) or the Honda but I am really struggling on Eau Rouge and Raidillon. Even trying to go through 'safely' my car will spin quite easily, aggressively is just a lottery. Love the circuit but could really do with a way of just practicing that section for a bit. Posted a bad time on the server anyway just for the sake of it, but I can't even get the 'do 4 clean laps' part of my track medal rating still. Once again my journey to race night starts with gloom and frustration! Hopefully I'll have chance to put enough laps in to be ready to love it all again by Thursday.

Well I managed to re-create my 2:18.2 a couple of times so it wasn't a total fluke.  There's a 2:17 in there (I was 2 tenths up on another lap before binning it), and the car feels quite safe actually; in contrast to other weeks when I've really pushed for these fast times.  Next couple of practice sessions will be on race fuel; with the focus on consistency now until Thursday.  Looking forward to this!! :)

I knew something seemed wrong about 12 years ago, I’d forgotten how old I am, I actually haven’t driven a real car for 23 years. Obviously the racing is making me feel young again.

I get a similar feeling to when I used to play competitive football.  The buzz of race day, the excitement of pitting your wits against others in a competitive setting.  The highs and lows when it works out and when it doesn't.  The comrardery.  Love it!

cheers milko, thanks for the tips  :)

27.5ish

you guys aren't messing around with these pressures! i did a full tank of fuel (or whatever 60 is) driving around with tyres ~26.6 thinking that's pretty close, should be fine, went a little faster than before but not much. think i was running agressive setup because it sounds like it should be faster. no idea if the lambo is any good but it is green so that helps. upped the temps by 0.9 on each wheel, dropped the fuel to 20, then on the first lap after the out lap went ~1 second faster, then the next lap another ~1.5 seconds faster again. then tried some more and kept crashing. but yeah the handling and grip was loads better with pressures closer to the 27.5. i maybe retiring from ACC again happy not being 6 seconds down at least.

Haha I was thinking of you! Actually I can, but it’s 50/50 if it ends in death. Unfortunately not flat out is probably only 60/40, I need to work on my line going into it I think.

Heh, I lift briefly the moment I turn the wheel right to get up Raidillon. Then it's full throttle again. I am taking Eau Rouge as far to the left as possible before going uphill though, for the best line. Also, look for a landmark in the background to aim for when judging the left kink on top of the hill.

This is frustrating me again. I’m in the 2:20’s which is slower than last season.

I think I just need to accept that I’m not any good a fast lapping and just enjoy the races.

Can definitely take flat in the Ferrari EVO ;)

Would you recommend the GT/F1 shape wheels? Is there any advantage there? Been looking at those after selling some stuff.

I’ve just gone from a G29 full wheel to a Fanatec F1 style wheel and whilst I was a bit worried before, I now prefer the F1 style.

For me, it feels better when racing as you forget about any notion of moving your hands around the wheel. (Which you probably don’t do anyway, but this removes the idea completely)

Granted, I’ve not tried any rally games with it yet, but it feels great when driving GT3 cars.

Like most things in sim racing, I don’t think an F1 style wheel gives any specific advantage or disadvantage, but it feels better.

hold on, remind us how you got on in qualifying at Brands Hatch after saying something like that last week?

I finally managed five valid laps in a row at Spa! Now to see if I can try and go a bit faster, I seem to be further off the pace than normal here still.

Part of my idea to get one was when I thought my paddles might be iffy but the downshift protection makes sense so I probably don’t have a problem there.

I do have giant hands and tend to grasp and pull a bit more than I should maybe, I’ve got a bit of a habit of feeding round like you’re supposed to in normal driving. Swinging both arms round on tight corners seems like it would be unnatural to me but maybe that’s my problem.

I’ve had a couple of track day instructor sessions and one of the first things they say is “Forget all the feed the wheel stuff or 10 and 2 positions they tell you in the road. Put your hands at the 9 and 3 o’clock positions and keep them there. It’s good enough for F1 drivers, so it’s good enough for you”. (Paraphrasing a bit)

So I’ve always done that which is probably why the F1 wheel feels nice to me.

Yeah, that’s fair. No idea how I tend to do my fastest lap of the week during Thursdays qually. I think it might be because I usually practice in single player and for some reason go faster online. We’ll see this week as I’m practicing online.

@scoobysi are you joining us this week?

These are the first laps I’ve done in ACC or with my wheel since I stopped racing here before. I have the week off so I’ll see how it goes, although I’m not sure I’m ready for a multi-player race.

If that's for beginners, I dread to think what an advanced guide looks like! :sherlock:

Quite thorough, really good!

Keep meaning to ask, @davejm what's the server's track condition set to? I've done offline practice in the past on optimum conditions and the car drives like a dream, then go online and feels very different. Yesterday I did some load cell brake adjustments offline with the track set on "fast" instead of optimum, hopped on the server and it actually felt pretty similar. What is the difference anyways, is fast just less rubbered in than optimum?

Yeah 'fast' is just less rubbered in.   You don't actually get a chance to choose when setting up the server; as the track conditions are modeled on a full race weekend simulation so the condition of the track depends on the day and time.  But I set the practice day to Sunday at 2pm which usually means an 'optimal' rubbered-in track.  So I'm not really sure why it feels different to you as it should be similar to when you choose 'optimal' in single player mode.

Thanks man! I wonder if offline "optimum" is basically as rubbered in as it could ever get, whereas at the online server sessions conditions are good but obviously can still evolve through the course of the race...

I think, after much grumbling, I can finally just about get around the track. I hopped in the Ferrari Evo just to see and immediately cut a second off my time without making much effort to sort tyres out, in a car I've barely driven. So, hmph, I don't think the Honda is in an ideal place at Spa. But, it gave me a little hope and I think I might be able to work something out with the setup to get it closer, maybe. At any rate, I managed to sort a better time out so I won't have the wrong badge on the scoreboard now :)
