Quite nervous about tonight  I've played 30 minutes of ACC in the last 2 weeks (enough to set that time) but don't let that table topping lap time fool you; I'm all over the place around Brands and I expect my race pace to be pretty bad this time.  I already have race pace and consistency issues which I'm trying to address, but Brands tends to show me up more than other tracks.  Looking forward to getting back on track though! :)

I need other cars around me to measure myself against and maintain a good racing pace. I think that's my weakness, because whenever I am in the lead (which is rare), my pace drops without someone faster in front of me. That's why I am not that good at setting fast times, instead I'm trying my best to be consistent whilst making as little mistakes as possible.

This post should be framed for all to see. Thanks for that Docs link, I have not seen that before I don't think. Especially the hardware setting bit is really helpful!

Apparently ACC uses ~5.5GB of VRAM (GPU). I have 4GB on my 1050 mobile, which explains the recent stuttering. So it's not just the CPU that's bottlenecking my system. Thankfully I can add some extra (and faster) RAM to alleviate some of the stress on the GPU and CPU. Apparently a dual strip of 4GB RAM is better than 1 strip of 8GB (which I have now). It's all explained in one of the links there. I'm learning more about this stuff every day.

Isn't all the VRAM stuff a bit of a nonsense? I remember back in the long ago days of the 3080/3070 release and everyone was upset at the paltry amount of VRAM, watching people explain that it's mostly a load of bollocks and all those numbers are just the game asking for that amount of memory but not necessarily using it. I know for example  that during the Watch Dogs Legion free weekend, I set everything to Ultra with  raytracing on my 3070 and the little VRAM bar was yelling  that it was going to murder my computer and burn down the house. Running the benchmark and it was a solid 90fps throughout, despite the game telling me I didn't have the gear.

The VRAM chat is here at three minutes in, should be time coded.

Not sure, mate. If ACC uses 5.5GB and my GPU only has 4GB, then it seems logical to me that it matters for my system, for that game.

It may not matter when you have plenty of RAM (which makes up for the lack of VRAM if I understand correctly), but unfortunately ACC uses ~85% of my 8GB RAM (and with other processes it's ~98%), so there's little left to assist the VRAM.

I may be talking total nonsense though, so correct me if I'm wrong. Just trying to wrap my head around it.

4GB VRAM would be a limiting factor in most games these days - but to what extent depends on the game.  The discussion around the 30XX cards was based on them being released with 'only' 10GB VRAM with some folk expecting them to come with more.  The new AMD cards come with 16GB I believe.

I haven't seen that specific video (so I'm reluctantly commenting here); but that was the debate, yes.   It's not specifically a RT thing; just general VRAM requirement increases for new games across the board.  Some people said '10GB might not be enough for some newly released games'... lots of other people said 'nonsense it will be plenty' for the lifespan of this generation of cards.

@spatularare you on PC? The registration details are in post 2 on this topic:

If you're just looking to compare laptimes with us from driving on console we might have to work out an honour system, as I don't think we can mix and match on the same server. Unless I'm mistaken about that! These times we're setting here are 'just' us practicing for the Thursday night races.

At short notice or in three weeks, room for one more (maybe)?

I'm in the same camp as Meers with PC hardware (several generations older CPU; similar, albeit desktop GPU and a lower res) with added physical restrictions. But I managed to turn a lap for the first time in a long time... a long time :blah: after I paid a rare visit to Discussion and noticed this thread and the race and wheel ones the other day!

I'm trying to remember and find ready-made control alternatives or think up adaptations with wheels and hand controls (which will need a new/good used wheel... if I can turn it somehow) but might have something good enough1 for a possible gentleman racer bump start like this (1not a wheel! :D ).

There's mountains of luck needed at the minimum (hence the maybe regardless of when or how short or long an event) but if there might be a spot to bother my old mate @Meers sometimes... or just once :hat: , I'll try to follow things here and see if it's possible at the time.

I've not run on-line with a PC for decades and don't have any social/comms accounts, so don't know where to start or how much of a toll it takes on the already busy CPU if there's more than Steam and the game to run at once. I use headphones but can switch them around for a headset if there's chat. I've a couple of RLLMUK pages open in an attempt to inform myself overall and form some control/wheel ideas, though direct guidance or redirection to posts or threads for ACC or anything relevant will be welcome!

There is every chance of no shows - this might even prove impossible - but if I don't ask about a potential spot on the grid first...!

AFAIK people can join in whenever you're ready to. The worst that can happen is that you didn't get points in the earlier rounds, right?

Not everyone has/uses a mic, there is some chat functionality built into the game. It's nicer with it but not vital. Good luck solving your control setup!

Everyone is welcome to race or pootle around on track with us; even if you can't make it every week or have to no-show for any reason.  It's all casual :) I can give you access to the sever and you can dip in and out and race when you want; or take part in our weekly time-trial practice timings :)

Wow what an awesome evening of racing.  @SneakyNinja you're my nemesis!!  Although hopefully we can both challenge @SharkyOB and @SANtoOos a bit more.  Well done on your win mate.  You were fast and your defending was great.  Gutted I couldn't hold out for the victory after passing you; but glad you managed to grab your win (no offence Santoos! ;)).  Two mistakes cost me there, but I absolutely loved it.  What a night!

Sharky we missed you mate, hope everything is OK :)

@milko you're getting fast!  I was nervously watching the MFD towards the end and @Meers wasn't far behind either!

I had a moment almost exactly at the same time you had your second moment, put my left wheel on the grass under braking and nearly lost it entirely. Cost me about 3 or 4 seconds, without that I think we would've been in for a battle! Next time :)

@Count Buffalos made me sweat for about four early laps in race 2, I'm not at all accustomed to defending, that was so intense! And @Meers quickly joined in too although I think in the end that might be what saved me as you two started to battle and I was able to get a few seconds clear.

My first race was a bit of a disaster, got boxed out of the first corner, got in someone's way and tapped at the hairpin, ended up well down the field - and then drove super-aggressive lines and got quite far back up to almost where I'd started! A mixture of people in front crashing and one or two exciting overtakes. But it was too exciting so I didn't quit while I was level and then somehow lost control coming out of the Graham Hill bend, still not sure what happened but anyway, found myself facing the wrong way and had to let all the positions I'd gained go back again. I got some back for a second time, and then threw them away once more, just got caught out chasing people too hard and getting too close. @Valver and @willmill and me ended up having quite a few tussles that way. Valver I didn't actually intend to make that last T1 dive on you, you went in a lot slower than I'd expected and I'd probably gone in a bit too hot as I was filled up with way too much adrenaline by then. Luckily I only messed my own self up.

Yes, brilliant racing all around, well done @SneakyNinja!

Loads of great close racing, really enjoyed watching the tussle between @davejmand Ninja for the first half of the second race and then Ninja was just super solid when I was behind him, always covering the right lines when needed. Really looking forward to Spa

Thanks mate, I'm so gutted about missing tonight.  I moved house yesterday and it's still pretty much turmoil here, so I completely forgot about the races :(  Will defo be back next week though.

Black flag with orange circle This flag is used in FIA-sanctioned races to order a damaged car to the pits for repairs. A mechanical black flag is a black flag with an orange disc in its center which indicates that a vehicle is being summoned to the pits due to serious mechanical problems or loose bodywork that presents a risk to other competitors.

This was going for the first lap or so, I did notice in the replay that Meers didn't have his headlights on at first while everyone else did, maybe it was about that? It was so weird, I almost found myself being distracted by it at a bad time, never seen it before.
