I think @extremepabs lost connection rather than actively doing something to break it. I accidentally hit the eject button, bloody VR blindness. Everyone else retired for reasons. Its a friendly league, I think we should tend towards generosity where we can.

I did a little offline practice for Donington these past couple of days and with a little setup adjustment I think I’m quite happy, looking forward to seeing where that leaves me on the timing when I take it online. My first go at dabbling in the dark arts of “noticing I have oversteer on corner exits in this track and finding out an adjustment that might help”.

What sort of time are you setting?

I have matched my 1.28.5 on the server. None of the three sectors were my quickest in the session, which does rather suggest I could go that bit faster! A fun thing about this track is how many of the visual cues for corners are bollards and tyres that can get smashed out of the way, it gets harder and harder as time goes on.

I managed a better setup just before bedtime which gave me that 1:29.8. I had no time left to shave more off it, but I think I can find at least another half a second there.

The Forza time trial is also messing with my ACC driving style. The braking in FM7 is so sensitive that when I did my TT stint in ACC, I only dabbed the brake pedal before corners making me run off on almost every corner in the first few laps. I'm not sure if I can continue to combine the two. Also, the GT3 cars in FM7 are a bit...well, try for yourself.

What does everyone think about using one of the rest week races to try split class races? I thought it might be interesting to add, say, 10 GT4 AI cars to our GT3 grid? it could make the racing feel a bit more involved when it comes to lapping in a longer race anyway. Probably not much point in a sprint race.

I'm still feeling quite basky! I do need to do more laps though - not only to try and reclaim top spot but I still always feel like I'm one small error away from spinning out and losing it all.

FWIW my setup process was: Aggressive preset; set brakes to 1 and brake vents to 2F and 1R; dial in tyre pressure; noted that there was a slight oversteer going into faster corners so bumped brake bias forward a couple of pips (much less than the Silverstone change needed for me of about +2%); then found I was still struggling to accelerate away from some of the exits without spinning so I softened the rear anti-roll bar by one notch because a jpg on the internet told me to. I'm wondering if the brake bias change wasn't a bit placebo and I just needed to do more of it in a straight line but anyway it's evidently working for me. Just need someone to tell me Kunos messed up the BoP for the Honda in Donington and burst my bubble :)

Interesting idea about adding some GT4 AI. It'd certainly give us more to do, a fun experiment.

Shit?

Well I was trying to find less harsh wording, but yes. Crap.

I have played all the Motorsport games and have been advocating them since the first one, but AC opened my eyes and ACC has since blown my mind with its insanely accurate simulation model that it's hard to go back to FM. Playing it with a controller is torture with its twitchiness, and to be honest playing it with a wheel isn't much better (unless normal steering is solving the unpredictable physics effects).

Sorry, wrong thread to be discussing FM7, but it's given me a proper slap in the face.

It depends on how the AI behaves. If they're becoming erratic around other cars then I'd say give it a pass. I've no experience with AI races in this game because my laptop runs even worse with AI on track.

Ha! I thought I'd edited my comment because it was too flippant. But whilst we're here, I think that FM is a terrible series tbh, very much inferior to GT.

I actually thought of you and your PC when I was thinking about AI racing. I've never played with AI opponents either, I was just considering about ways to spice up the racing with the currently small field that we have.

Oh sorry! Do you want me to edit your comment out?

I wouldn't say terrible (3 and 4 were really good), but they've become gradually worse in their focus. The penalty system being one of my pet peeves - in FM2 you got penalty time added to your lap, now they (harshly) invalidate your lap when you fuck up in the flippin' last sector. Rubbish.

And I'm not sure how it all runs these days with AI. There have been quite a few performance updates recently. Maybe performance is much better now. In that case I'd love to try it.

You can't add AI to multiplayer servers.  I was wondering whether to open up one of the weeks to other communities though; so we can try and fill up the server.

Oh, I didn't know that :(

Are you thinking Power Q's community?

Yeah.  Although I wanted to speak to Matt first to see what the guys are like.   I don't actively participate in his Discord (I'm a lurker in a few, but don't really use them) so I don't have a sense of how friendly they are or what they'd be like as racers.  But as a one-off I don't suppose it doesn't matter too much.

Donington, oh Donington... I'm sure I enjoyed racing on you before!  Why am I hating you so much? :D

Really struggling with the track during practice!  To push for a good time you have to fling the car into the corners (there are a few tough right-handers like that) and i'ts so easy to get it wrong.  I know that over time the muscle memory will kick in for some of these turns, but in the meantime its a real struggle.  And the last two hairpins are a right bastard.  I haven't enjoyed practice at all.

Anyway, who's in for some sprint action?

  • Qualification 1
    • Time: 20:15 until 20:25 (10 minutes)
  • Race 1
    • Time: 20:25 until 20:50 (25 minutes)
    • In-game race start: 2pm
  • Qualification 2
    • Time: 20:55 until 21:05 (10 minutes)
  • Race 2
    • Time: 21:05 until 20:30 (25 minutes)
    • In-game race start: 8pm

That's a lovely shot! Is there a 4K version of it?

I unfortunately haven't had the opportunity to practice anymore, but I absolutely love Donington Park! Many corners have negative camber (sloping away from the apex) which unsettles the supension a bit and in turn reduces grip. Some of the corners also have a small crest before them which makes it hard to see where you're going. The last hairpin has both. I reckon it's one of the - if not the - hardest tracks to learn. Oulton Park has a similar vibe.

If it helps, I was also struggling yesterday evening. I did about 30 laps and while a lot of them were on cold tyres as I was trying to practice for the early laps of the race, I couldn't get near my old time. And yeah, some of these corners don't seem to have a 'safe' way to get around, you have to really commit the car to find the grip. Not much time to relax in the lap either. Probably a good thing we're doing sprints so everyone gets an extra chance!
