I'm taking my kid up to North Wales for half term - but also getting in a 'supercar blast' in an Ariel Atom and ...some kind of Lambo but I forget which one exactly, at Anglesey circuit. I expect to come back a better ACC driver, somehow. (hmm)

Yeah tbh I get tons of stuttering and screen freezes in Zolder

Funnily, so do I. Every other track runs smoothly (at ~70fps in 1440p) but not Zolder (despite it telling me that it runs at ~77fps there). Frametime is higher here though, and it seems to be caused by the pits being located fairly close to other parts of the track, iirc.

Oooh, I did one of them - the Atom is *amazing*

Enjoy!!

That me on the left of pic.

Nice! I see they had Team Milko Racing colours for you as well!

Since we're chatting about it, would you say yay or nay to any of the extras they're hoping to entice me with? I am tempted to do the 'drive 6 miles per car instead of 3' one, not sure about the lap as a passenger option but maybe, etc etc etc. Collision damage waiver I was going with no but then I'm reminded of my practice sessions in ACC...

So the extra laps - I'd take if theyre not too expensive I guess.  The damage waiver - I didn't take.  Mine was at an airfield and you'd have to be a total bonehead to hit anything other than a cone.  Seemed like a waste of money.

On a separate session I did take up passenger laps (in a Lotus Elise) and holy shit, it was an eye opener.  I had some young lad who was a professional driver and he made that thing dance.  It was amazing - he was at the limit of grip at every corner, just minute throttle adjustments to alter the attitude of the car.  I look back as having enjoyed that more than driving the R8 I had that day.  I found that most of the "drive other peoples car" track events they kinda make you hold back.  But the Elise passenger ride - he was able to give it the full 100% banzai laps.  10/10 would scream like a girl again   I guess if you get some old duffer who just happens to own the car and wants to look after the tyres and brakes, your experience may be quite different!  Can you eyeball the driver giving the laps and then say yay/nay?

Had a quick go on ACC with the CSL DD.

Some quick first impressions:-

  • Feels amazing, but strange
  • Less 'notchy' and mechanical feeling than the TS-PC
  • Running at 100% in driver, and 70% force in-game (which roughly translates to 5.6nm of torque
  • Feels weightier at the limit, easier to feel the gradual increase towards max slip angle
  • Although it feels smooth 90% of the time; there's a strange effect when hitting certain curbs which makes a really harsh clunking force which doesn't feel right
  • The Formula v2.5 rim feels AMAZING!

I just had a quick go in pancake mode and was hitting low 1:30s with race fuel, so looking forward to seeing how it goes in VR later.  Almost immediately it felt a lot nicer when going in and out of slow speed corners.  Really impressed so far!

Did a bit of practice tonight with the CSL-DD, but my Quest 2 seems to be playing up and the tracking kept shifting all over the place.  Restarted PC, headset, re-plugged cables, played with the lighting in the room.  No joy at all.  Hope I can get it going properly tomorrow.  Switched to pancake mode in the end; and did a few laps and managed to improve slightly (into the 1:28s now).

In the wheel rim settings, lower the FEI (Force Effect Intensity). If it's too high, it starts to rattle like that (mine's on 80%). Lowering the 'road effects' in the game's controls menu may also help (I have that on 25%).

Good to read those impressions! As I found out with my GT3 rim, formula-style rims are easier to turn and you can feel much more detail because there's less mass to throw around (as there's no top and bottom half of the wheel). Also, since the firmware updates of both my rim and base, the wheel feels harder to turn when I drive slower or when I dive down the hill after the first chicane on Zolder (going into that left-hander). I don't think I've felt that before with the P1 rim. It's bloody amazing!

Thanks @Meers, yep I've turned down the FEI and it feels better.  I have road effects off in ACC.

Yeah, for DD I think that's the way to go. You need to crank it way up for gear driven wheels. Belt drives between 10 and 30%.

My brother's coming over tonight to have a try at ACC for the first time. He's played the F1 and the GRID Autosport games with his Thrustmaster TMX wheel and he's thinking of upgrading to ACC on his Xbox One, but isn't sure yet if it's his cup of tea.

The CSL DD is the cause of my tracking issues with the Quest 2 :(  Something to do with the motor?

FUCK!

Seems to do a bit of EMI (electro-magnectic interference) indeed, according to a reddit post.

I think this guy has a workaround. I've not watched the video yet but it says 'solving' so it must be good news.

Yep I'm using Fanatec's recommend settings but with the FEI lowered slightly.

Dave, if you need a couple of those ferrite cores, I've got plenty of defective N64 controllers that have them on their wires. Let me know if you want to have them.

mmm... there's already one on the cable 🤔 would adding another one on there make a difference I wonder?

I just tried playing for a bit without tracking turned on, and it was fine actually.  It still detects the turning of your head, just not full movement around the cockpit which you don't tend to do when driving anyway.
