:D not seen these guys in ages!

Me neither. I think it must have been 20 years ago. It certainly ticked some of my UK-o-phile boxes. 😅

Any of you guys looking to get F1 2022? It's not a 'hardcore sim' like ACC, but what they always get right is the racing experience in these games. The graphics also look insanely good. I'm just a bit worried about the physics model, weight transfer through the ffb has been the number 1 thing missing from their physics model. Interested to see if they improved it now. Weren't they using a stripped version of the AC physics engine for the more recent iterations of the game (thought I read that somewhere) or was that a myth?

I played the trial for a bit last night and this morning.  First time playing the F1 games in VR so I can't really compare it to the others.

AC physics engine thing must be a myth, as that was developed by one Kunos guy years ago and I don't think he/Kunos have any association with Codemasters.

Yeah I can't find any mention of it online anywhere. Must've dreamt it then.

So there's a trial version? Gonna check that out!

The trial is just part of EA Play, which I get as part of Gamepass (I didn't even know that was a thing, until yesterday).

I too have been trying to get the hang of the F1 22 demo - with less success that @davejm so far.

I created a thread for it here:

Back to ACC - tomorrows Suzuka race is the end of the season, correct?  It's showing on simracing.gp as being a regular 60 minute race.  Is that right - no blue riband 90 minuter this time?  In my current "just about over COVID state" 60 minutes would be a blessing - but I wanted to check

Yeah, no blue riband event this time.  This series has a 'scrub' result (5 best results count) and you can't do that if you have events with different points awarded.

Turns out my lurgy was/is COVID too and I'm also quite relieved that it's not 90mins this time :)

Managed to get a few practice laps on the server last night and even that left me sweaty and knackered. Should be good for tomorrow though.

Ah, I've got Gamepass so I'll check it there. Cheers for the tip!

Ah, I've not noticed that thread yet. I'll take the F1 chat there.

So you've almost recovered? Good to hear. How bad was it?

That's quite a bit too much hype, mate!

@Erik are you gonna give the Lexus a runout on its home turf, or are you too thoroughly fed up of driving it now?

Nah, I was watching Foch struggle with it around Suzuka having exactly the same problems and I just cant be bothered to work hours and hours on my driving and car setup. I think I'll go do some kayaking instead, 36 degrees in shade so its about time to stop hiding indoors. Besides I dont think I can get closer than 9 seconds of my personal lap record. 😉

Re: F1 22 - I got to play the game early (i.e. in the last WIP version before release) and put together a review. In case anyone needs a bit of an overview, you can find it here.

On the ACC side of things, I managed to get some practice in on Tuesday. Suzuka always seems to be one of those low-grip circuits that should be tons of fun, but somehow isn't, at least not in a GT3 car. While my time wasn't that bad, I hope I can keep it together for 60 mins and see what happens :D

I always struggled with Suzuka, but it feels amazing in the Audi.  In contrast to Kyalami which felt sketchy at times.

Interesting :D It feels good after a few acclimatization laps, but never quite "right", you know? Like at other tracks where you can just focus on pushing the car to its limit without thinking about not binning it because you'll start sliding with one wrong input.

Great review, very thorough. This bit about the game worries me though:

The force feedback does a good job of communicating what the cars are doing most of the time, although spins are sometimes hard to impossible to feel coming and thus cannot be avoided. In general, there seems to be a slight lack of road detail even on bumpier tracks like Melbourne. The tracks feel mostly super smooth, which may be true for a lot of the modern tracks on the F1 calendar, but not for all of them. It is possible that this is a result of the F1 series still not using laser-scanned circuits.

So that's still the same compared to when I last played the Codies F1 games (2010-2014). I know they don't want to enter 'hardcore sim' territories with it, but surely it will make it a much better game if they did, even when you play it 'arcade style'?

Anyway, race day today! I've barely practiced and it shows:

Still, I'm going to rely on racecraft tonight and a massive portion of luck.

I've got to go to bloody Brighton for a meeting today, like it's some sort of pre-pandemic time without video calls. Hopefully I'm back in plenty of time to join in. I need to think safe thoughts, the only way my league position is changing is if I win the race outright to overtake Erik or score pretty much no points at all and @Meers and/or @SneakyNinja do very well. I'm thinking its highly unlikely I win it (I find the Degnas and Spoon too damn hard to do well more than about one in ten attempts) so hopefully I can make disasters unlikely as well.

Anybody watched the USA track preview event? Watkins Glen looks like a sort of cross between Spa and Bathurst, all high speed elevation changing corners and deadly walls close to the track. Looking forward to having a go at that. Not so immediately into the other two but they sound like they could be a good technical challenge.

I thought it was called 'sunny' Brighton? Isn't it supposed to be lovely there (for UK standards)?

Watkins Glen is awesome, raced on it plenty of times in various other racing games and it's one of my favourite tracks. You'll love it too, I'm sure.

The hotfix is here! Make sure you install it in time for the race as I reckon it's a biggie.

Thanks! I'm sure I could go on in two weeks after spending more time in-game, but a new sim or game always throws a lot at you.

As for the style, I think it would be possible to fit both worlds under one umbrella. They're almost there as is, as they got a ton of adjustability and driving aids. Maybe they'll improve the physics in the future, although without any assists, it's pretty hard already right now :D

Cheers guys! Podium too in the end! @SneakyNinja, well done, 1 bloody point between us mate!!! :omg:

That race was bloody EPIC. Loving Suzuka, loving wet races! I did an overtake lads, it was amazing! Round the outside of the esses. I'll post a clip soon.

@milko, that's some harsh luck man. 😲 It really was a gamble tonight. There was no telling what the weather would do with only 7 minutes of forecast.

@davejm, thanks for hosting and organising everything, you legend you.
