Nice one, I think the guys have covered things off.  How you getting on with the game?

 

We have a practice server that runs 24/7, so when you feel like venturing in you can go to the 'Multiplayer' menu > server list and then just search for 'rllmuk' and you'll see it on the list to connect to.  I'll PM you the password for this.  It's usually set up with the track that we're racing at the following Thursday, and the actual races are hosted on simracing.gp (the server is found in the same way through the menus).

I’m actually finding the game surprisingly accessible so far. I’m getting a lot more comfortable with the wheel and it’s definitely a lot smoother. I don’t think I’ll ever go back to using an auto gears assist, it’s so much better using manual gears. Apart from rally games obviously.

Welcome, @sbrandon111! I'm not sure how much you've raced online, so here are a couple of tips:

 

The in-game spotter or even better, the Crew Chief one will inform you of any cars in your blind spot.

Spend some time practicing pit stops and navigating the pit menu. It can be quite daunting to handle all at once.

If you happen to get a blue flag, just relax and carry on racing as normal. You don't have to dive off-track to let the lapping car pass, just don't hinder their overtake on you.

Thanks guys  There's definitely a sub 2 minute time in there somewhere but I just couldn't put it all together in one lap. It's very much a case of smooth is fast, and SECOND you start to push too hard the delta time spins off into the red.

 

One thing for @sbrandon111 - if you're using a 'VR Hat' as they're technically known around the pit lane here, don't do what most of us here have done and let it go dark in the room whilst you're racing which forces the headset to losing it's tracking resulting in a manic dash for the light switch mid-race

With more people on track it will definitely be possible to get below the 2 minute mark. As Erik said, there'll be much more water displacement then which is something they've included in the simulation model as well.

Hes probably new to ACC so heres my short list

 

-drive any cars and tracks you want to except for older (2016 or 2017) Porsche and Monza

-use safe setup preset first, you can always lower ABS and traction control

-the most important setup thing are pressures. Adjust cold pressures so that hot pressures(after couple of laps) stay between 27.3 and 28.0 PSI

-drive many laps, then some more. have fun

It all started so well, and then it didn't. 4 spins I didn't see coming in one lap was enough, and then getting lapped after 10 mins, just about did for me. 

Nice to see the grid growing however, and hopefully last night didn't put anyone off (says the guy who was considering putting the wheel and kit in the trading folder at about 9pm last night !!) .

I realized yesterday that many just pick the preset setups and dont adjust them much if at all, including electronics. While I dont think setup work is critical you will often be slower and/or the car will be more difficult to drive than if you prepared it a bit. Its good if you drive the same car a lot because you then know what TC, ABS, BB have worked before and how car reacts to setup changes.

 

Heres my supersimple workflow for preparing for a race on a new track-car combination. Many of you already do this and more but I hope this will help someone.

1. start

-Safe or aggressive preset or a previous setup

-Max toe outs, max cambers (non-maxed can work and be better than maxed out especially in wet, but maxing them is probably good enough)

-Set TC, ABC, BB to something that have worked before (if familiar with the car)

-Max rear wing angle if track is slow, otherwise high or medium. Zero splitter

 

2. drive

-Dont push the car, drive safe laps approaching limit from below. Find braking markers

-Adjust brake ducts so that brakes never turn orange(takes 3-4 laps to be sure)

-Adjust pressures until they stay between 27.4-27.9 PSI

-Observe behaviour: is it overall oversteery, understeery? Is there a problem corner? Is it you or is it the car?

 

3. tuning

-Use as low as possible front ride height that is still good over all kerbs and bumps. Consider that higher front and less splitter angle makes care less pitch sensitive and less sensitive to other adjustments, so lowest possible isnt necessarily best or fastest for you.

-Adjust overall over-understeer balance with rear ride height. Higher = oversteerier, lower = understeerier. Adjust overall downforce level and stability with wing. Aero settings are by far most influential so use them first. I often use max wing.

-If you experience wheelspin, exit snap oversteer, lockups, oversteer when braking: lower rear, use more wing, adjust TC, ABS and BB. There is nothing wrong with using high values if they work for you.

 

4. if its wet:

-Adjust pressures until they stay between 29.5-30.5 PSI. Overpressure is vastly better than underpressure. Even 35-36 PSI isnt too bad, but 28 PSI can be undriveable

-Use higher wing angle. Soften rear, lower rear!! Soften car overall 1-2 clicks: wheelrates, ARBs

-increase TC and ABS if needed

-Move brake bias rearwards(wet tyres are slightly bigger than slicks and speeds are slower so you can use lower BB to reduce braking distances and get the car turned)

 

Next race will be on a familiar for everyone track and its likely dry. I'll try to find you guys on practice server and be on voice comms to help you out with driving and car tuning

Just curious, but what are your diff and TCS set to? Which preset are you using and would you like one of us to help with the setup of your car? I sometimes see you spin for no apparent reason in spots where it shouldn't happen so if there's something we can do to fix that, then let us know!

To be fair last night I forgot that I had registered with the Merc and had been practicing and tuning with the Nissan. So I had to go with the standard wet preset, and just turned the traction down from 11, as I couldn't get away from corners as all.
