The VR field of view is quite narrow and varies by headset so peripheral view isn't great, but it is possible to quickly look over left or right to see if anyone's there - either out the window or in your mirrors. Some cars have better seating positions (Macca) than others for visibility in terms of A pillars being in the way, or lower viewpoints etc.

I'd say the view is fairly realistic in that if you were wearing a full face race helmet with a visor, that's the sort of view  you get in VR.  You can absolutely check over your shoulder for a car next to you at any point - interior roll cage and pillars will be in the way a bit - but it's fine.

Ah the helmet view comparison makes sense. Cheers for elaborating that lads. I hope to sample VR one day, maybe with the new PC.

In races, I use a combination of the track map, mirrors and CrewChief to be aware of others. Track map for overall situation and predicting when someone going to be close enough to make a move, and the spotter for more realtime info.

I can run mirrors now thanks to the latest update (they optimised ACC again considerably) but I have decided to not use them during races. First reason is because I'm not in VR, mirrors make less sense to use. Second reason is that I get a better view of what's behind me with the look back button. I also run Crew Chief, the radar, proximity arrows and surround sound to let me know who's in my blind spot. Works really well!

As for fuel, the Sim Dashboard app on my phone tells me how much fuel I have left, how many minutes of fuel I have left, how many laps of fuel I have left and how much fuel is consumed per lap. The latter is really handy for calculating the basic amount of fuel I have to load before the race.

Because my sensible half is hogging up the laptop for her work more often, I started having a look at gaming desktops again. I'm not looking at a mega-expensive setup, but something I can upgrade in the future if need be. As I'm mainly playing ACC and a couple of other racing sims (oh, and FS2020) I'm not looking for a setup that can run the latest FPS at 244fps, and the 60Hz HDTV is staying as well so 60fps is good enough. But it should be able to run VR. So far I've got:

AMD Ryzen 5 5600G, 3,9 GHz (4,4 GHz Turbo Boost) socket AM4 processor

ASUS ROG STRIX B550-F GAMING, socket AM4 motherbord

Corsair 16 GB DDR4-3200 Kit RAM

SAMSUNG 970 EVO Plus, 1 TB SSD

be quiet! PURE BASE 500 tower casing

Microsoft Windows 11 Home

Sharkoon WPM Gold ZERO 550W PSU

That's just shy of €900.

And I still have the GTX1070 (8GB) that I bought off Dave, which should give me a massive performance and visual boost over my current GPU.

If I have I forgotten to add something in the above, then please let me know.

Spoiler

For comparison, once again my laptop's specs:

Intel Core i5-7300HQ, 2,5GHz (3,5GHz boosted)

GeForce GTX 1050 4GB

16GB DDR4 RAM

120GB SSD, 1TB HDD

Looks a decent spec. Someone with more knowledge than me might be able to chip in on the AMD processor (more of an intel man myself) .

The PSU might need replacing once you upgrade the card however. Do they have a 750W option ?

Actually scrap that .Unless you are going down the 3090ti route !

GeForce RTX 3070              GTX 1080

200 watts                              180 watts

Yeah I've compared the various PSUs and came to the conclusion that 750W is a bit overkill. The CPU uses about 70W and then there's the fans, motherboard and memory. 550W should do.

That Ryzen processor is what I have (although the non-G version) and it's great.

I think you have the X then?

I've been looking at upgrading to a very similar set up to you Meers, I've been looking on tweakers.net the last couple of weeks at prices. Is there any particular reason you choose this motherboard. I've been eyeing up the MSI MAG B550 TOMAHAWK which is around €30 cheaper than the ASUS.

I'm also planning on getting the 5600x and the same size and speed ram. No graphics card update tho8gh as they're still ridiculously priced.

Enjoyed that. Gutted I tossed away a second place in race 1 with that rookie error of not checking my fuel! Of all the damn tracks to have to stop for fuel in a sprint race. Congrats to @texlex45 and his consistently alien pace.

Thanks @milko 😄 Think we need @Erik to join us for a race again to show us what the real alien pace looks like. Shame about your fuel as you were staying within striking distance really well in that first race.

I need to change car or game . So far off the pace since up I came back. Stacked it early doors race 2 and that was enough for me. I just seem to be sliding everywhere but I’ve had those setups forever. Most frustrating. Or can we get some worse drivers back! I prefer the practice to the racing these days…..

Frustration can always hit hard @mrben09. I am sure you will be able to make a strong return 💪

Maybe a good way to get back on track could be to just stick to the default aggressive setups? Because at our skill level (including mine), 90% of the time lost and instability in cars is caused by our own driving rather than suboptimal setups. And the aliens can manage far better times than any of us on the default aggressives so it's mostly driving technique.

Definitely this. Many moons ago I did a track day in my M3 and got blown into the weeds by a works Peugeot driver in a 106 I think it was. Really highlighted to me that it's the driver, not the car.

After my early finish I tried some different cars at Spa in pubic lobbies. The newer Merc seemed pretty stable , so I may change to that . Will be doing some more testing prior to next week.

I found I could be more consistent starting with the safe setup, learning the track then taking baby steps with aero balance, arbs and sometimes toe to tune out understeer / oversteer and get some rotation mid corner.

Well I've not chosen anything yet as I'm still shopping around and asking advice. I did see the tomahawk as well, but the sheer number of motherboards on offer is really confusing.

I need it to have 2 M2 slots and 4 RAM slots (with a minimum capacity of at least 64Gb). And on board sound.

Yeah I was also completely overwhelmed by the amount of motherboards on the market, I spent a whole afternoon a while back looking at motherboard videos, figured I really didn't need to spend that much on one and just make sure it has a small bit of overhead for upgrading, I overspent way too much with the current motherboard I have.

The model I suggested has everything you're looking for, the only thing with the m.2 slots is one is gen 4 and one is gen 3 and I don't know which of the two has the direct link to the cpu, but I think for our needs we won't notice massive performance differences, maybe in games a few years down the line.

So attention everyone. Turns out the game has a bug or glitch in the setup screen that effects some cars, at least those that have the toe setting range go way negative. The set static toe is wrong: its way, way more positive in the saved setup file. So set 0.00 toe is actually like 0.20. Something like -0.25 is actually static 0. This effects balance(no wonder some cars have been stupid understeery), tyre wear and top speed. Cars not effected or effected only a bit are M4, M6, 720, Nissans at least. I dont think its entirely coincidential that it was specifically the pre-update OP 720 and M4 that happened to be uneffected. Some of the big losers that could not have been setup around this glitch and be fast had been Boat, Ferrari, Aston, Lexus, Honda at least. Those cars should be back now and the M4-720 meta is over.

So if you dont drive M4, M6, 720, Porsche, maybe Lambo, heres what you do: go to setup screen and reduce toes by 0.2 at least. Experiment a bit. You may immediately find half a second of laptime and find the car easier to drive too!

Some aliens had of course been using this for a long time but chose to not reveal it. Even CDA boys. Disappointing, so disappointing.

So I missed this last week and heard you guys talking about it. I Just did some hot laps and managed consistent 2.20s which I could not get near on Thursday. The only setup change I made was front and rear toe reduction. I don't think this is just for aliens. The car would rotate mid corner coast and it certainly felt like a lot of understeer was gone, Raidillon / Eau Rouge was flat out no sweat, La Source, Les Combes and bus stop all felt faster, again because the car felt like it was rotating.

Maybe its psychosomatic but the car felt so much better, and I do wonder if this had been a starting point for setup I could have maybe been consistently a second faster.

Just got my LFM Spa race in, 11pm night race added some fun. In split 5, qualified and finished 2nd with fastest lap, pretty happy with that. It's definitely easier when the carnage is behind you, still a fair few yellow flags out in the first couple of laps. That's the first one I've not had to pick my way through a load of it and pray I don't get punted from behind.

Whats your setup like, wheel and pedals etc? Changing cars may help a bit or might not at all, because you will then have to learn a new car.

Suzuka is one of the most difficult tracks in game so if you wish to have a practice session with Meers and myself some evening I can fire up the server with whatever is your favorite or strongest tracks. And then we'll focus on the basics and making the car more predictable and driveable, if it isnt.

Yeah I'll keep a lookout for that, don't want to pick one that's under-equipped. I actually had a case and CPU at some point (and a motherboard on order), but I returned those when I realised (read: was persuaded) that we could better use the money for our wedding. I only kept Dave's 1070. 😆 😔

So I'll have to start all over again. Just doing some reconnaissance work for now until it becomes clear that mrs Meers is going to need the laptop for work a lot more in the future (also in the evenings).

I won't be around this week, I have an operation on Wednesday to remove a tumour (benign, they think) from my arm.  So I'll be out of this week's race, and next week is a break week.  Which gives me time to recover for the next one.  Hopefully the procedure doesn't effect my sim racing too much.

Oh god I thought my time was terrible, Suzuka is such a technical track. It’s great and I am enjoying learning it in ACC but it’s certainly challenging.

Suzuka is hands down my most favourite track ever. Did a couple of laps last night whilst finding a good setup, so my time's just a banker lap. Not sure if I get an opportunity this week to do more training.

I’ll be giving this week a miss too guys.

Awww mate, pity. Hopefully you'll be joining us soon again.😔

@davejm, do you need someone to 'man' the session for you or is it all automated?
