Mega Drive Mini, and now... Mega Drive Mini 2!

Anyway at the risk of boring you with something you already know it turns out that switching the game to 6-button mode in this patched ROM is as simple as going into the options menu and...  pressing the Mode button - so presumably 6-button mode still won't be accessible on the Mini unless some kind of fix is applied by the hack authors (or you knock up and apply your own mode-button-eliminating patch).

I emailed MIJET, they're working on a patch for Shinobi III specifically for the MD Mini, so you can activate the 6 buttons without using a mode button. Apparently the code is done, we're just waiting for the MD Mini hack to become public so it can be tested.

Can anyone who has the MD Mini and a modded PS Classic comment on how the emulation quality compares on the two please? Lag, sound, visuals, scanlines/shaders etc... just the overall experience of which one does it best.

Contra hard corps / probotector is incredible. Always thought contra was just too hard and unforgiving, but the Japanese version is really accessible.

And the pacing is intense! what an opening. Unrelenting and intense. Never played anything from the time (or even recently) that had that kind of pace to it.

pondering picking up the contra collection now whilst it is still on sale...

Just had a lovely little hour with Castle of Illusion. I've seen it many times both in print and video but having never owned an MD I'd never sampled its charms, not even via PC emulation. I've mentioned in this thread that I only came to gaming late, around the 32 bit era and tbh I don't think I've got nor ever had the stones to play a lot of these games the way they were intended. They can be bloody tough. But now with the magic of finger contortion and the summoning of a save state menu my shit skills cease to put the kibosh on the fun.

I really am enjoying some of these games and Castle has been the proverbial cherry. I've recently completed Sonic on 3DS due to my getting fired up for the arrival of the mini and with the thanks of being able to use save states, but I now wish I'd held off to play on the mini itself as the pad is fantastic.

So yeah I could have played these games on other than official/approximate machines over the years but for some reason playing on facsimiles of the original hardware with their sexy pads has really hit the spot and I can see myself starting and finishing games I know a lot about but had never given them the play time they deserve.

I'm going to complete Castle of Illusion by tomorrow evening hopefully and then immediately make a start on another personally well observed but never played before game, and one I thankfully hung fire with on 3DS , Gunstar Heroes.

If you get the chance, play the Master System version as well.

Moved on to Monster World IV now, about 3 hours or so in. This is a real lost gem, it just feels really polished and enjoyable to play. Great music and level design too.

Mos def. Probably my favourite title on it at the moment.

I also found out why it's actually Monster World IV, and where it fits in the Wonder Boy series...

If I'm not mistaken, MW IV is also WB VI - but they stopped calling it WB because the protagonist is a girl this time.

And did you know that WB III: The Dragon's Trap, is actually WB IV (and MW II)? Because there is no real WB IV (and the real WB III came out in the arcades first - the MD version of which featured some amazing box art by S. Matsushita btw) and MW III is WB V.

I don't want to pester Japanese Darius players with my giddy questions, but can anyone tell me how to go about capturing video directly from the Mega Drive Mini? I assume this is what the person below is doing, rather than pointing a camera at a monitor, but please do correct me if I'm wrong. Is there a way I can produce similar results on the cheap? I don't currently own any potential recording equipment apart from my PC and phone. Cheers!

Yeah I tried to pick this one apart when I did the videos but I think I just confused things further.

I'm really not a fan of Treasure's output. I find them technically brilliant but generally unsatisfying to play.

....except Gunstar Heroes. It's fucking terrific. Stage 5 , fighting hordes of enemies across the sunset cityscape while the triumphant music plays is just a stunning Mega Drive moment.

Fantastic game.

Surely they're non-canon when talking about the WB series? :p

Yes, but it's still the case that same original game not only has its own series of disorderly sequels, but also ended up spinning off an entirely different and similarly scattershot franchise, making the whole thing hilariously complicated..

Darius is absolutely insanely hard. I've only beaten the first boss once.

Love it though.

Yeah, it's a beast! Everything is faster and more aggressive than in the arcade versions, and it isn't just a result of the game being reduced down to one screen - the PCE ports are a lot easier than this! I really like the change of pace, though, and having to completely re-learn a game that looks identical to something I've played to death is a rare treat.
