I believe My Life in Gaming tested the SNESC's audio lag as being in the range of 2-3 frames. Joe from Game Sack and John from Digital Foundry tested the MD mini's audio lag as being as high as 10-11 frames.

EDIT: Though there's some chat about it being 'fixed' for final retail revisions..?

Will be interesting to see how people pick up on this because I personally think it’s not going to be an issue for most people. It’s not noticeable at all to my ears and we’ve been playing it for weeks and weeks now. Countless people have played ours and again no one has mentioned it. It’s clearly there because tests prove it’s there but my ears can’t detect it.

It definitely wont be an issue for most people and well within the realms of acceptability for what it is IMO (not that I have any hands on experience).

Having had another look at the games list I cancelled the Japanese version and went for the Asian version (Strider, Castle Of Illusion and Alien Soldier swung it).

Hardware is the same as the Japanese version, right? Anyone know if the games box art will display as the same as the Japanese ones, or the rubbish looking Genesis/Mega Drive ones?

In the American version the box art depends on your chosen language rather than the machine so if you're choosing English you're probably getting rubbish.

If only they had used 2 options, one for the language in the menus and another for the game/ box art.

Ridiculous

Yeah it's a weird one.

Especially as, in the american one (and I presume ours), if you select Japanese Mean Bean Machine changes the entire game to Puyo Puyo.

*waves at sig*

I'm doing videos on all the games right now and there's a couple of others that'd benefit from this (Japanese Contra Hard Corps for instance is somewhat easier than the US/PAL one) but I don't yet know if that change was made.

It seemed quite evident in the video I watched. Like, you'd expect a jumping sound to come as soon as a character jumps... but it's more like half-way through the jump. A side-by-side was done with original hardware, and the difference was absolutely insane. Nobody seems capable of nailing MD audio :(

If your home theatre has an option to adjust sound delay surely that would work if it bothers you that much?

Alternatively the hacking scene is getting to work. This runs on M2s virtual console emulator so getting other systems to run should be straightforward.

Turns out Mortal Kombat 2 was originally on the system too but cut (probably to keep the rating down)

This is all very nice so far from the play I had this afternoon. I love how the UI and box arts change when you change language, which is straightforward enough.

Couple of minor gripes in that the scan lines are too aggressive for my tastes and, predictably, the version of Super Shinobi is the revised version with the bald guys instead of Rambo etc

The tower thing is quite a nice little package. It’s got a cool little book of technical drawings that has this note chart at the end. What’s it meant to be?

The song title is ‘young power’, although my Japanese is now so poor it would take me hours to translate the lyrics at the bottom so I’ll let someone else do the heavy lifting there.

Can anyone read sheet music?

What's the absolute best version of this to go for? I've been leaning towards the Asia (not Japan) one for both the looks and slightly better game selection (I could have sworn I read that a couple of classics not on the JPN one are on the Asia one?). Does the Asia one also come with the 6 button pads?

Really though, I'm not getting one until I hear hacking is go, I want to add colour/sound tweaked ROM hacks of Golden Axe, Outrun, etc

Anyone got the tower and a US mini? Apparently the Japanese carts only fit in the Japanese version, hoping that’s not the case or at least the 32x still fits.

Just break the flaps on the slot or insert an Action Replay!

Had mine turn up from Amazon.jp. So so cool!  Love the Japanese MD packaging.  Deffo debating the Tower Pack now.

Cant wait to see whether it can be hacked. The JPN version deffo has a load of stuff on it that i’d swap out given the option. Good to see Snow Bros on there, big fan.

I can read the music notation, what would you like to know about it? I've just gone through the tune in my head, it's in the key of E flat major. I'll have to sit down at the piano to actually play the tune and work out the harmony as there's no indication of what that is.

I've translated the song lyrics, but I have to admit that it's not my forte. It doesn't help that this song is a parody of company and school songs that are very common in Japanese culture. (Featuring a three-chorus structure with a couple of antiquated grammatical parts, lyrical patterns that shift in an obvious manner, and pompous hyperbole throughout the song.)

Young Power

Lyrics by Sega Employees

Music by Wakakusa Kei

1

Ideas overflowing with intellectual creativity

Let’s build together a rich culture

Our hopes and dreams, high up in the cosmos

Working on a common cause for society―that is our mission

The creations of tomorrow become life!

SEGA SEGA SEGA Young Power!

2

Highly developed technology, effortlessly

Let's reach for the new wave together

Our hopes and dreams far-flung across the sea

Anticipating the future―our challenge

The creations of the future become life!

SEGA SEGA SEGA Young Power!

3

Employees and company, together, bursting with fighting spirit

Let's march forward with the strongest of bonds

Our hopes and dreams, to infinity and beyond

The pursuit of our goals―our pledge

The creations of the world become life!

SEGA SEGA SEGA Young Power!

You can sing along, too:

This year I spent half a grand I don’t have on Real Ghostbusters ‘statues’. If a pricey ornament brings you pleasure, be it nostalgia or design, then it’s serving a function. Fortune favours the bold.

Plus this may be a collectors item so hold on to it and you could make more than your money back down the line.
