Mega Drive Mini, and now... Mega Drive Mini 2!

If there's one thing no-one seems ever to have said about Dynamite Headdy is how crazy hard it gets near the end - at least for me. Some of those later levels / bosses rinse me of lives / continues, I've never made it to the end. It's far and away Treasure's toughest MD game in my eyes. And it's a gem.

Dynamite Headdy is an incredible game. One of the great 16-bit platformers and still plays wonderfully today. The only real issue I have with it is how difficult it gets towards the end.

Edit: As above. I've only ever finished it with save states.

Overall this is a better lineup than the recent MD Classics Collection (Edit: Alisia Dragoon is another welcome addition), but since I've already got that the difference isn't enough to justify getting this too.

On the subject of duds, I always thought Sonic Spinball was garbage. Real shame they couldn't get Devil Crash/Dragon's Fury on there. One of the best games on the system for me (along with Revenge of Shinobi, SoR2, Shining Force 2 and Headdy).

I think the Dynamite Headdy nay-sayers must be misunderstanding the game to be some uninspired Zool-esque 90’s cash-in mascot platformer without realising it’s a batshit fucking post-modern (for its time), fourth wall-breaking meta piece of absolute Japanese insanity. It was made by Treasure ffs. In the 90’s, when they were at their peak. Remember all of the Yoshi’s Island ‘Super FX’ style of graphical tricks and effects it pulled throughout? I have no idea how they got the Megadrive to sing like that. Remember that big baby head boss that opened up to reveal an adult head inside for some bizarre reason? It was no fucking Bubsy the Bobcat, come on.

I hadn't played Dynamite Headdy until that recent Mega Drive compilation came out. Absolutely mad game.

The other night I played Blades of Vengeance, that's a good game I'd never heard of. I feel the MD has a lot more hidden gems like that than the SNES

And then split to reveal an old man's head.

Spinderella is still one of the most memorable boss moments in any game for me. The first time it did what it did I was amazed.

I think it released around the same time as Sonic 3 and got harshly overlooked at the time because of that. But it's endlessly more inventive and varied, as well as technically superior. Some of the perspective tricks and music are exceptional.

I suppose it ties in with its slightly more rebellious ethos compared to the more conservatively endorsed SNES lineup. Turns out that was more than just radical 90s marketing on Sega’s part.

The BP garage near where I grew up used to hire out Megadrive games and rental 80s / 90s VHS movies, including video nasty type fare. For me the Megadrive occupies a similar space in my nostalgia ducts, seeing all these bizarre and unknown games displayed alongside really intriguing VHS covers. It seemed a bit of a Wild West compared to the SNES (which I actually far preferred, to be fair).

Talking of Yoshi’s Island, I wonder if Dynamite Headdy’s fabricated world (wooden standees, stage props, puppets etc) were much of an influence on Woolly World and Crafted World? Hadn’t really considered that before, since DH sort of faded from my consciousness until today’s discussion.

Website's updated, but oddly, Road Rash 2 is missing, and Eternal Champions should be the blue boxart. Work experience kids in!

Sorry but I don't think i'll ever like Dynamite Headdy. I've tried, it's just so visually unappealing. Rocket Knight should have had that place. Now that is a an absolutely brilliant platformer.

I'll give it another shot when the Mini comes out though.

I always thought if it had the same ‘physics’ as the mainline Sonic games it would have been a lot better. The control and feel was just so far off.

Ya know what, it’s a bloody decent list that, and makes a change from the usual suspects they chuck on those cheap Argos things.

There are some sad omissions (Sonic 3 and S&K wtf? They still sell them on the Xbox and Steam so what’s the ish?), but some nice surprises.

I’m sure it’ll get hacked to pieces though.

It’s like everything happens half a second after you press a button.

They should have built one - and only one - game into each piece of hardware.

Except the base unit, of course.

With Snatcher being the MegaCD offering

As with all Sega's compilations, most of the crap inclusions can be explained by brand recognition.

I think there will be more games to come either as a firmware update or a second edition of the device. Thunderforce III being the only Tecnosoft game, and them bothering to license just Road Rash II from EA but not, e.g., the megaselling Desert Strike make me particularly suspicious. As well as various obvious first party games.
