Uncle Nasty
Completed it last night. Best game since Dark Souls for me. What's the best end game mode to play? TVHM, Mayhem, or start a new character? I definitely want more of this game despite completely rinsing all of the side missions and DLC, just not sure which mode to play next. By the end of the story I was one-shotting everything with my FL4K and a couple of Jakobs weapons that saw me through almost the entire game, so a bit more challenge would be welcome, though I would like to try other characters too. Thanks for any pointers.
Opinionated Ham Scarecrow
Have you played any of the DLC? Handsome Jack's casino heist and the Cthulhu one (Guns, Love, and Tentacles?) are great fun.

There was so much creativity, detail and imagination in this game, it was everything a videogame should be for me. Easy 10/10 material.

There's loads of replay value
moosegrinder
I haven't played this in a very long time, it let me down so bad. I ought to see what the X/S version is like. I take it you still have to clear an area from the beginning if you log out half way through doing it? Maybe I should finish it and get some co-op on the go. No matter how many particles and objects it throws at you the frame rate is still buttery, the colours are gorgeous and the lighting is just beautiful. I really enjoyed BL2 on the PS4 (even the Mac version was decent but the framerate was awful on my machine) but this is a completely different experience entirely. The combat and movement is that much more fluid and responsive, load times are almost non-existent so you don't mind fast travelling back to Sanctuary to store or sell your loot, respwan after death is instant, new areas load in seconds, the UI is instantly responsive, everything about it just feels highly tuned and slick. The characters can grate for sure (even though some of them are at least tolerable) but that was the only negative for me.

I really loved FL4K's invisibility and linking up critical hits with my Jakob's shotgun that fires three rounds in one shot. In most areas I was taking out three enemies with one shot three times before the invisibility ran out. It was a race between me and my pet to get the kills. That and the Hornet legendary pistol had me covered for most situations. Hardly used sniper rifles, SMGs, Heavy weapons or assault rifles at all. Best character to try after FL4K? I think that's a big part of the turn off, the writing is horrifically outdated. I loved Borderlands 2, own it many times on many formats, and the writing and humour is arguably the same, so why it's a massive turn off for me this time is a bit baffling. It might be that the Callisto Twins aren't nearly as fabulous as Handsome Jack and just come off as incredibly try hard and irritating. Also gating your slots for weapons, mods and that is so 2012. What the fuck, Gearbox?

Yeah that is a bit annoying, especially as you're hoarding all of these items before you can actually equip them. I also would've loved an option to cycle through grenades, shields and guns without having to go into my backpack, the way MGSV does it is pretty much perfect and would work here. I definitely would've used more of the loot and experimented more with loadouts if swapping weapons out wasn't as clumsy. The grenades and shields are so different to each other that you really want to be able to swap them out on the fly depending on the situation. shirubagan
I bought this yesterday. Seems fun so far. I just whacked it on Easy mode to get a feel for it and am on like the third mission – should I just start again on Normal?

Dudley
I am tremendous bobbins at games, I've completed very few games on normal. All 4 Borderlands are in that list. For reference I whacked Prey, Mass Effect and Last of Us down to easy.

I will warn you though, it's not the most dip in and out game. If you stop halfway through an area it'll chuck you back to the last checkpoint band respawn everything. At least it used to. shirubagan
Put the difficulty back up to Normal and can't really notice much difference yet. Currently just farting about in the first area killing Skags and having no idea what items are good or not. I'm very much enjoying it so far. The game seems to have no Quick Resume function, however it does seem to freeze the game if it's the last thing you played. I don't know what that's about. moosegrinder
That's true. Borderlands has always been better in co-op.
shirubagan
This is so good. Just hit Rank 10 and the first big story beat. It looks so good and runs beautifully on the Series X.
shirubagan
I'm struggling with KillaVolt (and weapons in general). It was tough but fun doing the mission leading up to him, but Ijust keep dying and haemorrhaging cash. I have some green rarity machine guns which seem to still be better than any purple, blue or gold stuff I've found (apart from Sniper Rifles, but they're no use for arena fighting which don't seem any use (they're Machine, LMG and shotgun). I picked the mech character, but the mech gets destroyed pretty quickly, doing negligible damage in the process. Is it a case of level up, keep searching, hope the shop has something good or gut gud? moosegrinder
I have vague recollection of hitting a similar wall. It's been a long time since I played it but I remember checking the shop on Sanctuary, checking the iridium shop and keeping a lot of guns on me for various situations. I also remember feeling permanently under powered. That was part of the reason I stopped playing.
shirubagan
Update! Murdered the shit out of him. I double backed out of the entrance and there was a Zer0 Mission really nearby. The boss dropped an automatic pistol with corrosive damage and +20% shield boost which is an absolute beast. When enemies are affected by the corrosive damage they also start spawning cash Went back to some of the earlier missions and now I am the Murdertron-2000.

shirubagan
Awesome. I’m really enjoying it — a very well-spent £27 for the Super Deluxe Dumbass Ripoff and I’m nowhere close to touching the DLC missions.

shirubagan
I don’t know if this is because it’s my first Borderlands, but this is soooooooo good. The creativity in the weapons is superb. I just got a gun which deals radioactive damage that spreads through nearby enemies and instead of reloading, it’s thrown like a grenade… But that grenade splits into four homing missiles which also have area radioactive damage. Just brilliant
Dudley
A lot of the downerness on BL3 is a bit like say, Airplane 2. A lot of reusing old stuff and not doing it QUITE as well. Without that baggage I'm not surprised you're seeing it in a better light.
Dark Soldier
It is, by a fucking mile, the best gameplay the game has ever seen. Fantastic location and enemy variety. The only thing that stops me replaying it 10+ times is the story and writing. Its so horribly bad. I know you can skip cutscenes now but even incidental dialogue is awful. I think I've gone through Borderlands 2 almost 20 times since release, and I still love what the story does.
