@Nathan Windwhat are you using to focus you on what games to play.

When I play on c64 and vic20 I play the games I always loved becausde I still love them. And I find different ways to try out new stuff, one way is to look at new releases and I use back issues of Zzap64 (thanks @deKay for the scan storage!) to find me "gems" hidden or otherwise.

Do you have a method or are you trawling Lemon64 etc?

I am aware that I am missing so much from the back catalogue but it is pretty daunting - and its always tempting to load Paradroid again :D

I'm not using anything at the moment other than general 'best of' type videos to pick out anything that takes my fancy. Currently a scattergun approach while I get to know the Commodore, just enjoying silky smooth versions of games I'm used to playing at a crawl. But what I intend to do after the dust has settled is deep dive into some of these CRPGs and strategy games in the main.

For starters anyway.

I found RPGs tough going back in the day so haven't revisited them. I was younger and less tolerant of slower games back then so I might dig out some RPGs.

My first RPG I fell in love with was Eye of the Beholder on the Amiga so I skipped the c64 ones completely.

Seriously, a great place to start is the Lemon64 top 100. It covers pretty much all the acknowledged classics, not all of them are that playable today, I suspect some of the votes are based on pure nostalgia rather than how they feel to play today. Another thing I like to do when I'm a bit adrift is filter by publisher and have a go there. Had a great afternoon recently playing Alternative Software's budget games, for instance.

RPGs though, you really need to get hold of the docs for these old ones, plus maps. They require some real patience to play through especially after years of PC and console RPGs. Don't go in wanting to 'just have a quick go", set the whole afternoon aside and do it right.

There was an Eye Of The Beholder port to C64 in the works, not heard any word on that in a while.

Don't suppose you know if you can use any old USB mouse with these?  It'd be a boon for Maniac Mansion, Lemmings, Arkanoid etc.

With the THEC64/C64 Mini? Not certain.

There is an adapter called Micromys that allows you to connect PC mice to the original C64.

For your listening pleasure... Episode 1 of Zapped to the Past is now live.

https://zappedtothepast.com/

It's only on Podbean at the moment but will be added to all the big podcast sites over the next few weeks as approval can take time to get on them all.

Give it a listen if you like c64 games. I make no apologies if we did not like games that you may love...

I'm looking forward to it. It's not showing in my app yet so I'll keep an eye out for it. I did a tweet to my mostly C64 base followers, can't hurt.

Th's awesome. Thanks for that. Hope you enjoy it. Be good to hear your feedback on it.

Just to say, the structure is a little off in the first few parts as we didn't know we would talk for quite as long as we did so split into it into two parts. By Episode 3 parts 1 and 2, we had a better handle on the structure so it's better balanced.

We're now available on Spotify.

If you want to listen to us yap about Elite, Shadowfire, Cauldron and others, then here you go.

We're looking at games on a month by month basis, covering the majority of games that were reviewed in that month's issue of Zzap!64. Not all of them are good, I can tell you that.

Well if you need a guest coder when you get to my issues give us a shout. Who wouldn't want to rake over the coals for Wanderer (16%) and or Spitting Image (39%)? I did have a couple of good reviews though, including the controversial Rugby: The World Cup.

How has the podcast gone? Gaining any traction?

Would love to have you on for a chat at some point. I see your games are someway down the line for us, but I'm sure we can arrange something before then.

It's gone OK. Not setting the world alight, just yet, but more downloads than I was expecting, which is always good to see. Just whether anyone comes back for part two is the real question. I hope they do.

I somehow ended up with Spitting Image for the C64 as kid. I don't know how you sleep at night, you bastard.
