The Saturn Appreciation Thread

Can I ask an emulation question? I own the original version on disc of Shining Force III, which I've only ever played a bit of and would like to get back into, given that I re-played SF I&II last year and it works on an emulator but looks like arse. Both of the emulators I have tried claim to have scaling options, but nothing seems to actually work and it is still running at the original resolution. Is there a trick I'm missing? I've tried Saturn emulators in Retroarch and also standalone, to no avail and it's frustrating.

I also have Mystaria (a SRPG) that I'd like to play but that looks even worse at native res. Can anybody help?

I bit the bullet and ordered a Wingman SD adaptor, should arrive today. Coincidentally my Japanese copy of Decathlete arrived yesterday... that'll be better with an arcade stick rather than getting cramp hammering a joypad!

I also (finally) got a Japanese copy of Sega Rally. I've missed that game so much since I sold my PAL Saturn.

I've used that Wingman adapter on a 360 HRAP EXSE and a PS3 SF4 Fightstick, they needed a bit of remapping which is a bit of a cumbersome process but after that they work really really well.

Cool, it's just arrived so I'm going to check for a firmware upgrade first, then get stuck in with testing it. I'll be using the 8BitDo arcade stick and (for Dreamcast) a Retrobit wireless Saturn controller.

I'm also hoping it'll work with my Magicbox Xbox OG adaptor and let me use the stick on that console too... but I might be pushing my luck lol!

I had to remap two buttons for the Saturn, but a quick playthrough of SF2 Collection (Is it Super Turbo X on this?) and Decathlete and I'm over the moon with this adaptor! Over bluetooth too, what a time to be alive!

One observation about Decathlete - I only previously owned PAL Athlete Kings which was "optimised" for PAL displays, it used the Saturn's high resolution mode and was always a bit flickery on a CRT. Well the JPN version isn't, it looks much better! I'll need to get a JPN copy of VF2 next as I always found that was the same on PAL machines.

Would anyone be interested in grouping in for a Satiator delivery?

They’re expensive by default but the biggest killer is the shipping (default is $155 on top of the costs of the item, import duties etc) however the shipping price doesn’t really change if you order more than 1 so I thought if a few people wanted to chip in it would make the shipping a bit more bearable. It’s still gonna be expensive though.

The shipping is about $55 via UPS.

To the UK?

On the website if I estimate shipping to the UK the only options I get around $150, no idea why it’s this high.

Am I missing something?

I paid something like $55 for shipping when the Satiator released, but yeah was hit for VAT later that came to maybe £70-80 or something, so that sounds about right if the shipping does include all the import costs.

I think I said forever ago in this thread, it's not for everyone because it is expensive. But it's absolutely magnificent - the single best thing I've used in the ODE realm. Basically an Everdrive for a CD-based console, as in it's plug-and-play and you make no modifications to the hardware. If you can afford to spend that much (and you want to), it's completely worth it.

I don’t think the extra $100 on the UK shipping is to cover VAT as when you add more Satiators to the order the postage cost doesn’t change. I don’t know why it’s so expensive though.

My £285 breakdown was based on; cost of item, postage split by 6, 20% of the total value added for VAT, extra SD postage once the item was in the UK.

Just gonna say that Fenrir is a viable and cheaper alternative that just plugs into your Saturn motherboard and power but you do lose your CD ROM drive.

Still cheaper to own two Saturns and a Fenrir than get a Satiator and one Saturn.

What about three saturns?

I have three saturns… and I could the satiator on any of them?

even my PAL one?

Got one of my grails today : the later re-release of Alpha 2 in the Plastic case, rare as hens teeth, in minty fresh condition !

Just a couple more games and my pal collection is done.

Cool, pretty sure that’s the version of the game I have. What’s the going rate? EBay only seems to have the earlier paper and plastic case version.

I got this on a lucky buy it now and the plastic case wasn't specified. It's been so long since one was listed there aren't any on the closed listings either. But over the years I've seen the plastic versions of desirable games like Nights and Exhumed hit three figures.
