I’m not sure how I link my Switch account to this machine - I can’t enter my account details on the Nintendo Network ID page as  it’s not a Nintendo Network ID.

Mind you, the music on this settings page is AMAZING.

Think you might need to create a Nintendo Network ID then link it to the Switch Nintendo Account

Am sure someone else will confirm this before you do anything, I don't have a Switch yet so my credit is sat on my NNID

Then yes, get the upgrade.

The simplest way to put it is the "Sweet spot" where the 3D actually works is massively, massively larger on the new one because it actually watches your eyes.  As an owner of both based on your posts I'd unreservedly say DO IT.

Done. And with that, the 3DS officially becomes my "most purchased console", with three versions owned (or five versions if you count the "DS family" as a single console).

3ds.jpg.6df2dcf6045ba32cec4d8dbad5e3cf0b.jpg

The new one is pre-owned but it seems to be in good condition, save for some scuffs/marks on the top of the case. The screen is fine. The stylus is missing, but it came with a charger.

I just gotta sort out my memory cards, do the console transfer, and get the old ones wiped and traded in for a bit of credit.

The "stable 3D" screen is witchcraft. As I'm watching it, it's watching me. Really clever tech and a shame it was effectively abandoned.

I’m transferring from Older 3DS to Newer 3DS, as Older 3DS is on its last legs (already corrupted the previous two SD cards, for example). However; Older 3DS has cut out during transfer twice. Third attempt, just getting error 014-0062 messages.

Nintendo don’t allow you to sign in your Nintendo ID on 2 separate 3DSes simultaneously and download your bought  software, do they? Almost thinking, fuck it, can’t be bothered with the transfer, but don’t want to lose my purchased games. The only save game data I’d care about was my 3013-vintage Animal Crossing village, bit that went in the last SD card crash. :(

You could ring Nintendo and they can take the old one off the account. Then when you sign in with a new one, you should be able to download your stuff. They did that for me, I sold one and 12 months later they just took it off the account when I got a new one and all my purchases were available. Obviously this is Nintendo though, your mileage may vary

Thanks, I'll give that a go and see...

edit: sorted after a fashion. Thanks @Vorgot

Big news guys - I flew back from Newcastle yesterday and somewhere got my first Streetpass! :omg:

Yay! Thats one things thats a real shame they didn't carry on with. My son and I were chasing our last Puzzle Swap piece of 1712 for months before we got it last year. We both still get the odd one as well, but its a pretty rare occurrence. It was typical that I found out about setting up a homepass relay about a month after they took the servers for streetpass relay down.

I think the best thing to would be :

Buy the 32GB Micro Card

Once it comes, transfer the data from the current card to the new one using @deKays guide https://lofi-gaming.org.uk/blog/2015/01/15/upgrading-your-3ds-sd-card/ and an SD adapter

Then do a system transfer, you'll be able to take the micro out of the old machine and adapter and put it straight in the new machine.

Think that would be the path of least pain.

Thanks for the guide, deKay, it worked a treat. But even following this, the 3DS transfer process is so damned confusing and stressful. So many ominous "are you sure" messages and instructions that don't quite say what you think they're going to do. I'm glad it's sorted now, even though I'll never get to watch those little Pikmin collecting tiles again.

The new 3DS is lovely. The volume slider being moved to the top screen will stop me accidentally nudging it with my hand; the stylus is a little chunkier but is in no danger of ever falling out of its slot; and the stable 3D effect means I can just play without having to worry about keeping it steady.

I've picked up Kid Icarus: Uprising, a game I was unsure about on the old hardware as I knew it'd have a play style that required holding the console oddly and losing the sweetspot. Absolutely not a problem with the new system. 8-)

I'm still hoping Zelda: Majora's Mask comes to the 'Nintendo Selects' range like it has in the States, but maybe that ship has sailed...

Yeah that one never got a release on the UK/EU eShop though.

@Keyboard Koala It's available now for 100 Platinum Points for anyone who missed it assuming you have a My Nintendo account.

I've recently upgraded to the New 2DS XL and as someone who never used the 3D I love how light it is compared to the 3DS XL model. The only problem is that some of the Ambassador GBA games don't work properly on it with the screen not being displayed properly. Has anyone else had this problem?

Noticed that theme last night and grabbed it.

Can't comment on the Ambassador games as I'm been arguing with Nintendo to get them back to me since my original 3DS was stolen before we had system transfers and nintendo accounts so they have never been able to replace them for me.

The weight of the machine is great though, much more comfortable to hold.

Seeeing this thread isn't doing my tempation any good.

There's something about the games, hardware and feel of the 3DS that always make me want to come back , buy a machine and pick up Mario 3D Land and Ocarina of Time. The nostalgic feel of the games, but combined with the 3D effect, make the experiance more than the sum of its parts. Also, as time has moved on, I feel 3D Land has transended other games I've played and has become the best game I've ever played. Fantastic 3D effect, great 2D / 3D courses, fantastic control and some memorable moments.

I miss 3D Land...

I'm currently combating FOMO by playing Luigi's Mansion 2 and Pokémon Moon. My 3ds like of shame isn't massive but it is old, and that's somehow worse. I've also got Codename Steam, Dragon Quest VIII and Sushi Striker sealed :/

I've still got loads on my 2DS XL to get through. Barely touched DQVIII yet, go the last Phoenix Wright to go at, SMT IV, Fire Emblem Awakening (Yes I know its great, I just haven't go there yet) and plenty of others. Also playing Luigis Mansion 2 for FOMO reasons and finishing off Persona Q2. Never mind the Etrian Odyssey games. Doubt I'll be retiring the console any time soon

I still play 3D Land regularly, its the newest 'main' Mario game I have access to but its an absolute gem. Perfect portable game. Ocarina as well, I'm just on the Garudo Valley stuff. Perfect portable game. Have you played Link Between Worlds? Definitely up there with the best on the system

My 3DS immediate pile of shame when I'm not playing Pokemon is Yoshi's Woolly World, DQ VIII, Phoenix Wright Spirit of Justice, FE Fates, Persona Q and Radiant Historia. The system has such an amazing back catalogue of games that I find it hard to pick one and stick to it which is why I usually end up playing yet another Pokemon game.

Another of the new offers on the My Nintendo site is New Super Mario Bros 2 for £19.99. Which is still expensive but I swear this is the only mainline Mario game that is never on offer and is still full price everywhere despite being released 7 years ago.

It's great isn't it? I always felt the game got a rough ride as despite critics and players getting how good it was, they seemed to say that if only it was on a big console it would be better and the 3D effect is just a novelty. When 3D World came out, that seemed to be given the classic status and I feel that's a real shame.

I felt like a child experiencing Tomb Raider and Mario 64 again playing 3D Land. The beautiful level design that took full advantage of the 3D and the handheld nature made it feel unique and novel wheras a console port took that away from me. Having this little faberge egg of a game was part of the appeal for me; This fantastic, brand new yet past looking adventure, distilled into this little hand held...

I've got it on my Amazon wish list now... :omg:

Do it!!!!!

I could never see the 3D effect, even without that its a stone cold classic. I can't see how saying it would be better on a big console is right, it's clearly designed for the platform. I'd love to play World, and while you pick up a 3DS, I may well pick up a Wii U as my christmas treat this year

Forgot about Wooly World. And Hyrule Warriors Legends. Got both of them on cart but as with you, I have too much to choose from. My Nintendo has the Phoenix Wright v Layton, Majoras Mask and Bowsers inside Story on discount at the moment, I certainly never see the first 2 of those any cheaper.

NSMB2 didn't quite hit the mark for me weirdly, and having SMW and SMB3 on the console already, not sure aI could justufy adding it just to ignore it. And you need to get on to Persona Q, My favourite game on the system hands down. The second is still great, just not as great as the first and it got me into the Etrian games as well which just adds hundreds more hours of games not to play......

I haven't touched my 3DS in over a year, but it's such a lovely little machine that I can't bring myself to sell it on. I feel like I've played all the best games on it already, though.

I've played and enjoyed:

OoT

FE Awakening and Fates

Zelda: ALBW

Metroid: Samus Returns

Mario 3D Land

Monster Hunter 4

Pullblox

Pokémon Y

Animal Crossing

Theatrhythm FF

Phoenix Wright Trilogy

A couple of the Layton games

Zero Escape: VLR

I've also played but didn't enjoy as much:

Xenoblade

Bravely Default

Luigi's Mansion 2

Majora's Mask

Are there any other exclusives or games that haven't been superseded by more recent entries in their series that I've missed? Looking through a few lists online, the only games that might appeal to me are the more recent Pokémon games (although now Sword and Shield are out, I'd be tempted to to straight for them instead), Mario Kart 7 (although I've rinsed 8 twice through already) and the Mario + Luigi RPG games. Apart from that it's stuff that has been ported to the Switch already or JRPGs, which I'm always a bit dubious about.

Any recommendations?

If you enjoyed Theatrythym and like music games in general, Project Mirai DX is a fantastic game with tons of content. Depends if you like the other Miku games though. The other Phoenix Wright games are great as well, and I would definitely recommend the M&L games, especially Dream Team Bros.

If you don't mind digital I would recommend waiting until Christmas to see what eShop sales they have, while Nintendo games never really get that cheap most other publishers often have decent discounts. ATLUS games get especially deep discounts and I would recommend Radiant Historia to everyone especially since they added some gameplay improvements that make it less of a grind on 3DS. Not on your list but brilliant if you like puzzle games are the BoxBoy and Pullblox series.

What's the best PW game, in your opinion?

I've just watched a few reviews of Radiant Historia. The JRPG trappings are a put off, but the battle system sounds interesting. Does it have the legs to keep you interested right to the end? I've lost count of the number of JRPGS that started well but which I abandoned about half way in.

And I loved Pullblox but haven't played the sequel, so I might check that out. Not played Box Boy, either, though isn't it on the Switch?

Edit: Typically, RH was down to a tenner on the eshop lat month

The new Friendly Mode in RH means you can play it as a visual novel. I enjoyed the battle system on the DS version but the way the game works means you do repeat some sections which can make it tedious. Jeremy Parish has a good review which explains it better than I can

It was on offer a couple of weeks before for £18 which was when I bought it. It'll be on sale again soon, I'm waiting for PQ2 and EO Mystery Dungeon to drop below £20 on the eShop and I will then have both series on my 3DS and I'll have no excuse not to play them.

BoxBoy is on Switch but I think it's a different game. There are three of them on the 3DS and the Switch game is a sequel to them.

The Project Diva games are Rhythm action games using Hatsune Miku and other Vocaloids, a quick google and you’ll know if it’s for you or not! But they are the pinnacle of rhythm games I think mechanically.

PW? I think they are all great but are best in order. I’m on Dual Destinies which is great and I think Spirit if Justice then brings back characters from earlier games.

New Super Mario Bros 2 is an odd one: Has got the unmistakable feeling of Nintendo heritage, feels much more authentically Mario than any third-party replica could ever get... Yet it doesn’t feel ‘right’ on so many aspects. Can’t say it’s all that worth seeking out except for the Mario completists.

I agree that Persona Q is a must-have.

It’s a shame that Q2 isn’t quite as good. The story, characters, side bits are all brilliant but the dungeons are just not as memorable as the first one. Money is way too easy to get though, there are no big decisions to be made on gear purchases, but I’m still having a blast on it

I had the exact same problem with the error message. Reading around it seems it has nothing to do with your account and is just the transfer system being terrible. I sat beside my router and kept trying over and over again waiting for the stage after entering your NNID password to be successful and after the tenth attempt it finally worked. If anyone else has this problem all you can do it keep trying.
