The 3DS Resurrection thread

It's a small device you can put away that plays the exceptional 3DS and DS library, which is well worth dipping into when the impulse hits. It's dead at the end of its generation right now but it does so much the Switch can't do with its games it worth keeping around for a resurrection in a few years, I reckon. If I were feeling like this I'd go through the 15min process of softmodding it, put everything I want on a card and then sell the stuff that takes up more space: the games.

I just bought a New 3DS XL (I think that’s the one!) off @bridger yesterday - I haven’t had a DS since the original fat one so I’m interested to see how it advanced.

I bought it primarily because I like the sound of one of the games in the Dungeon Crawlers thread, and then I noticed you could get Pilot Wings for it so I ordered that off Amazon for £5 delivered, which seems like a steal.

The benefit of keeping a 3DS is that the games on it are never going to available again as they were originally released until the 3DS Mini comes out in 20 years. Dual screen gaming is dead and second screen use is mostly restricted to menus but that's why I'd never get rid of my 3DS.

Is that the blue one I saw on here a few days ago? That’s exactly the same one I grabbed earlier in Feb.

Yes, a blue one.

Soul Hackers is the dungeon crawler I fancy, was mentioned by @Klatrymadon in this thread:

But from reading above, buying digital games on the machine might be fiddly now, is that right?

not massively. You can use an E shop top up code on the machine or add exact funds via credit card on the website linked a page or two back. It’s more fiddly than it was, but hardly difficult

Which I did.

I could probably find a second hand one (local CeX seems to have one in stock) and, with trading in my current console, would be looking at a £35 upgrade cost. Is it worth it or should I just plough on with my current 3DS, finish up the last few games for it and put the money towards something new?

It's not like I wouldn't use it; there's still five games I want to play and at least one of those supports the second analogue nub...

Do you use 3D, because the new ones make the 3D what it always should have been.

Yeah, it's the best feature of the machine in my opinion. It turns what would be 'flat' games into these little dioramas in your hand.

And I do find losing the sweet spot annoying when it happens.

Sod it, I'll get the upgrade. After all, it's the end of the DS lineage and I can't pass it up. :)

Then yes, get the upgrade.

The simplest way to put it is the "Sweet spot" where the 3D actually works is massively, massively larger on the new one because it actually watches your eyes.  As an owner of both based on your posts I'd unreservedly say DO IT.

I own 3 3DS consoles, and I have a mountain of unplayed 3DS games, including all the classics (Bravely Default, Fire Emblem Awakenings etc.) and every now and then I resolve to actually finish one of them. It's then that I remember exactly why I haven't finished any; the bloody shitty battery life of the console and the fact it completely loses its state when the battery dies. I've been spoiled by the Vita I suppose, but I can't face replaying the same bit multiple times because I forgot to plug the machine in at least one every 24 hours. First world problems and all that.

Oh! I just got my one, I thought I’d switched it off when I closed the lid but it has a blue light winking away and an orange light...I guess it’s still on, got nothing suspended so it doesn’t really matter, but can I switch it off with the button?

It annoys me a bit and the 2DS XL has an even worse battery. Mine is always plugged in when I am not using it (and when my son hasn't got his plugged in)

It's got a sleep mode when you close it mid-game/menu but it's not very efficient, especially compared to today's consoles.

AR games were basic virtual treats that used IRL cards to do little minigames and graphical effects, like having some Pikmin run around your desk. It's Nintendo so the console was built around this unique function, it saw a little use at launch and was then promptly dropped.

OK, I'm getting the New 3DS XL, but have just realised that the new one comes with microSD card not a normal sized SD card. The card in my current 3DS is 32GB so I can't transfer everything to the built-in 4GB micro in the New 3DS and I can't use the current card in the new system.

What's the best way to deal with this? Delete stuff and make do with less space? Or buy a 32GB microSD and transfer everything from one system to the other?

If I get a larger microSD but I do the transfer to the smaller card before getting the bigger one, is it easy enough to 'upgrade' later? Or is it best to wait a few days longer for the sake of convenience and do it all in one go?

EDIT: Bought one anyway. They should arrive around the same time.

I think the best thing to would be :

Buy the 32GB Micro Card

Once it comes, transfer the data from the current card to the new one using @deKays guide https://lofi-gaming.org.uk/blog/2015/01/15/upgrading-your-3ds-sd-card/ and an SD adapter

Then do a system transfer, you'll be able to take the micro out of the old machine and adapter and put it straight in the new machine.

Think that would be the path of least pain.
