The 3DS Resurrection thread

Ooh found a wish list on Amazon I must have been keeping up to date with 3DS/DS game recommendations - thoughts on any of these:

Fire Emblem Fates: Birthright (3DS) <- I was really excited about this but the response seemed kind of lukewarm compared to Awakening, so never got round to it in the end.

Last Window: The Secret of Cape West (DS) <- no idea what this is??

Jam with the Band (DS)

Style Savvy: Trendsetters (3DS)

Knights in the Nightmare (DS)

Paper Mario Sticker Star (3DS) <- I loved the N64 Paper Mario, but I believe this franchise is pretty different with this iteration right?

Inazuma Eleven (DS)

Metal Gear Solid: Snake Eater (3DS)

Scribblenauts Unlimited (3DS)

Dark Spire (DS)

Professor Layton vs Phoenix Wright (3DS)

Fire Emblem: Shadow Dragon (DS)

Luigi's Mansion 2 (3DS)

Golden Sun: Dark Dawn (DS)

Rhythm Heaven (DS)

Fantasy Life (3DS)

999 (DS)

Mario & Luigi: Partners in Time (DS)

Mario & Luigi: Bowsers Inside Story (DS)

Dragon Quest IX (DS)

Infinite Space (DS)

Radiant Historia (DS)

Thanks, hmmm still pretty tempted!

Casting an eye over my own DS game collection, I don't know if anyone has mentioned Mystery Dungeon: Shiren the Wanderer on the DS, but that was a fantastic Rogue-like dungeon crawler from back when such games were a bit rarer, highly recommended.

Q is one of my favourite games ever, but not everyone shares the love. I logged about 110 hours on it I think. The sequel is out in a few weeks. Can’t wait.

999 is amazing, the sequel Virtues Last Reward is even better.

Sticker Star is just OK, it’s never really dug it’s hooks in, sat on my 2DS unfinished

Dream Team Bros is a hoot start to finish

Is there an easy difficulty mode? I actually have a copy which is still sealed - my pile of shame is large.

Yeah I think Dream Team Bros might be my next purchase.

I actually already have Virtue's Last Reward sitting on my SD card but never played - should I play 999 first or can I go straight into VLR?

There are 5 settings, normal is the standard so yes. You can adjust on the fly as well.

I’d at least read up 999 first but it’s not essential. And VLR is an amazing game

Might have to: 999 is absurdly expensive on DS these days and getting it on Steam seems to defeat the point.

Of the Mario & Luigi games on 3DS, I love Dream Team Bros to bits but by all accounts Paper Jam was rather phoned in & Bowser's Inside Story is, while great, still a remake of a DS game that i'd already completed with an extra mode featuring Gameplay that i don't care for.

Are the latter 2 still worth picking up if I can find them for a decent price, or are they both a step down from Dream Team?

If you're going to unseal and play it, DON'T let me pay you some cash and swap it for my opened one please :p

I'm keeping it for now. I may have unsealed it, I really can't remember and it's in a box of shame somewhere.

I may preorder the sequel as an investment!

No worries, but if you do find it / it's sealed / you want to play it, keep me in mind, mine is in nice condition, but unfortunately opened, so would like o move it over to the sealed side of the shelf from the opened side where it currently resides :p
For some reason, I am one of "those" people, the idiots that like sealed boxes :p

You seem to like strategic games, I'd recommend you get the DS version of The Tower (SimTower). Absolutely brilliant version of Yoot Saito's seminal classic, it's basically the GBA version but better. JPN exclusive, but the language barrier isn't a big problem and I completed it.

I've got that.  It was a lot of fun.

Heads up for anyone like me looking into picking up another 3DS again - Game currently have pre-owned ones on sale.

Picked up a New 2DS XL for £59.99 myself but they also had the old style 2DS for £30, 3DS XL for £59.99 and the New 3DS XL for £70

Is this just in store? I don't see anything online.

3D is back, baby!

Well, not really, but I wanted to take a break from my Metroidvania kick that I've been in in the past nine months or so, and so I decided to take a game summer vacation with the 3DS.

I got a used New 3DS at a reasonable price, and got Pilotwings Resort, Ridge Racer 3DS, and the freemium eshop game Rusty's Real Deal Baseball. There are more games on the way, but so far I've had a really enjoyable time with those 3. Really relaxing, stress-free, novel games--with great music to boot.

It's been really, really enjoyable. It's a shame that smartphones disrupted the 3DS vs Vita portable rivalry. Perhaps it was inevitable that Sony would give up on the Vita anyway, but both platforms had so much to offer, and such distinct personalities.

I picked up Pokémon Uktra Sun a few weeks ago. What a fantastic game, though for some reason it doesn’t support 3D :(

I could never get into Pokemon, tried Ultra Moon but wit wasn't for me. My kids have loved them though, I feel I'm missing out in some way! It might be the 100 or so other games on my 2DS getting in the way though....

Theatrhythm Final Fantasy: Curtain Call - Has this been mentioned yet? An amazing music/rhythm game which satisfies those Final Fantasy nostalgic urges perfectly. I blame this game for me not getting around to the various replays I keep telling myself I'm going to do one day.

There's a ton of DLC to go with it, mind. I think it's all worth it.

Second that - didn’t expect to enjoy it as rhythm games not usually my thing but I was pleasantly surprised!

Thirded. Got it recently to tie in with my FFXIV addiction and it's brilliant. The DLC is great too, just pick out what you want as the base game has over 200 tracks. I picked up the XIV DLC songs for less than a fiver. Now I can play King Moggle Mog whenever I like!

Excellent games! The same two of a small handful of 3DS games I own (for a system I've borrowed!)

I've focussed on trying games which utilises the 3D well and so I can recommend the Nintendo Triforce of Metroid/Mario/Zelda as games that are better because of the 3D effects.

From September you won't be able to buy things from the 3DS and WiiU stores using a credit/debit card because of new EU regulations requiring two factor authentication that these systems don't support.

You will still be able to top you balance up on the online web site with a credit/debit card

With the Switch in full swing is it almost time to get rid of the 3DS? I'd be loathed to do it since it is a great system with some amazing games (OOT remake springs to mind) but equally when I grab my bag for a trip the Switch ends up in it rather than the 3DS.

My head says yes, but my heart says no.  But I just don't play the damn thing enough...

See I've still not got a Switch, but play my 3DS to death but I think I look at differently than other people. The Switch is great for playing on the go I am sure but my most played games on the 3DS are only really possible on the 3DS, like Etrian Odyssey and Persona Q series and Project Mirai. Then there are too many games that are exclusives on there for me to want to get rid of it. Yep, I would love a Switch, but I think you would be mad to ditch the 3DS, the itch will return to play a few levels of Mario 3D Land at some point........

If you look at the Switch Lite as the true replacement for the 3DS, then I think thats wrong. The Nintendo handhelds since the DS have offered something different than what Sony was offering, which was a handheld version of the home console experience. The Lite goes right to that stereotype, so you lose that uniqueness. I'm not down on the Switch at all, if I had the money I'd have one in a flash, but I'd still keep my 3DS

I’ve only just started my journey into the 3DS as of this year. So far I’ve played through Bravely Default and FF XII Revenant Wings which is a DS game anyway. The fact that there are so many things on this exclusive to it means I’ll be continuing to enjoy this for a while. I’ve been tempted by the switch myself but feel I should be ok for now with a PS4 and a 3DS as my main go to machines. I did once get a GBA Micro and that’s hardly got played but part of it was the size of the thing followed by the cost of a lot of games and the 3DS just outweighs that so much with content. I’ve literally missed years of games.

I have a regular 3DS XL. I'm slightly annoyed with myself that I didn't snatch up a New 3DS XL when they were first released, but I didn't expect them to just stop being made and no replacements introduced.

I could probably find a second hand one (local CeX seems to have one in stock) and, with trading in my current console, would be looking at a £35 upgrade cost. Is it worth it or should I just plough on with my current 3DS, finish up the last few games for it and put the money towards something new?

It's not like I wouldn't use it; there's still five games I want to play and at least one of those supports the second analogue nub...

Keep it. It uses up minimal space, being a handheld, and you'll regret selling it eventually. It's not like there will ever be hardware released in the future that will play 3DS games, certainly not as intended with the full 3D effect. :(

The nub is pretty useless, I was playing Resi Revelations with it and switched it off. But the performance boost is great for Hyrule Warriors Legends. As I can't see the 3D effect on the 3DS (I'm stereo blind) I use a 2DS XL which is really good, but I guess that misses the point for a lot of people. It's always been about the second screen for me.

See that’s the thing about the 3DS is that’s it’s quite unique and also with two screens which isn’t something you see often, then there’s the stylus aspect of it and blowing into the mic etc and things which won’t translate to other devices. I managed to get a New 3DS blue for like £85 off eBay. Did take advantage of some 10% ebay discount though at the time.

I sold mine at the start of the year. I’ve not missed it one bit.
