Not sure if its OK to ask but has anyone hacked their 3DS/2DS?. Really want to buy one to hack to use as an emulation device. The GPD was OK but I'm not a huge fan of the setup, and the hardware controls. The 3DS controls are just lovely, so would like to know if its possible and where to start?

But the 3DS is also a DS.

On that point, what DS games should I get for my 3DS? I skipped the DS at the time and only really got the 3DS in order to play A Link Between Worlds. I then proceeded to love the absolute fuck out of it, and played most of the major 3DS classics, but the only DS stuff I’ve since bought to play on it are the Castelvanias and Wario Ware Touched. What did I miss from the DS era?

Do you like RPG’s? My DS collection consists of all the Castlevanias, all the Dragon Quests, a pile of other RPG's and strategy games (Fire Emblem, Advance Wars, Radiant Historia etc); and the odd platformer/shooter (Aliens Infestation; Metal Slug 7 etc).

Advance Wars

Pac Pix

Zelda Phantom Hourglass

Ouendan / Elite Beat Agents

Air Traffic Controller

Theme Park

Puzzle Quest

Meteos

Age of Empires (both games)

Military History Europe At War

Those are some of my favourite games on the system.  Ace Attorney is also essential, but easier to buy on 3DS.

Slitherlink. The best puzzle game ever.

If you going to hack it, make sure it's the *new 3ds/2ds.

It's very easy to hack (takes maybe an hour or so) and for SNES and Megadrive it's great for emulation. That's pretty much all i have used mine for lately - i do believe there are emulators for a bunch of other systems but haven't tried those.

The guide that @spanky debrest posted works great. I've hacked my new 3ds xl and a friends new 3ds without issues with it.

I must admit i have yet to try mame but i've heard it runs well.

Brill, I missed his reply.

Yeah playing mame would be excellent if it works well.

Bangai-O Spirits

Contra Dual Spirits

Ketsui Death Label

Konami Classics Series: Arcade Hits

Retro Game Challenge

Soul Bubbles

Space Invaders Extreme 2

It's worth getting a flashcart for fan translations and NSMB hacks.

999 and Ghost Trick are two of the best games I've ever played.

Edit: Monster Tale is a pretty leftfield but lovely metroidvania crossed with Pokémon, if you're into that.

DO you need a flash cart to play fan translated 3ds titles, the only game I really want to play would be Miles Edgeworth 2

You need a hacked 3DS (with CFW) to run translation patches alongside cart / installed titles or install / run patched titles (there's no need for a 3DS-specific flashcart).

On the subject of Puzzle Quest for the DS, it's available as a DSiWare game on the 3DS eShop.  It doesn't appear to be a cut-down version either (except for lacking the Plague Lord DLC) it is the full DS game, which AFAIK makes it the only full DS game DSiWare ever had.

Nice! I'll be in the market for a new 2ds xl, there's a detective conan ds fan translation I always wanted to try!

You seem to like strategic games, I'd recommend you get the DS version of The Tower (SimTower). Absolutely brilliant version of Yoot Saito's seminal classic, it's basically the GBA version but better. JPN exclusive, but the language barrier isn't a big problem and I completed it.

I was struggling to know what game to pick up next and this thread reminded me about my 3DS and now I'm stuck into Puzzles and Dragons: Super Mario Bros Edition, so cheers for that.

Please share any recommendations you might have for slept on turn-based strategy/tactics, RPGs and interesting puzzle games on 3DS/DS, which might not have already been mentioned as I've played a lot of them.

Persona Q is a good dungeon crawling turn based RPG, the Etrian Odyssey games ditto, I'm enjoying EO Untold The Millenium Girl.

I've played the first Etrian Odyssey I think and really enjoyed it until I hit a bit of a brick wall with it because it is quite unforgiving. Is Persona Q a bit more easy-going?

There are a couple of difficulty spikes in there as well. It requires some grinding to be able to finish it. I completed it, but I love Persona so pushed on through the tougher bits.

Thanks, hmmm still pretty tempted!

Casting an eye over my own DS game collection, I don't know if anyone has mentioned Mystery Dungeon: Shiren the Wanderer on the DS, but that was a fantastic Rogue-like dungeon crawler from back when such games were a bit rarer, highly recommended.
