Don’t listen to this advice. Everybody would be better off with having never seen episode IX.

Disagree, the whole trilogy is of a similar quality from film to film with TLJ being the stand out.

…and with that little opinion statement done, I’m out of here.

Rise of Skywalker is terrible. It's easily the worst of the 9 movies and manages to retrospectively make the previous two movies worse because you know that the interesting ideas they did have ultimately went nowhere. Not watching it is a very good choice because whatever you are imagining it is like will be better than what it actually is.

Yeah, I agree. It's an absolute shambles of a film.

 why would you not watch it and just make up your own mind...

Fully agree with this.  Whilst I know fans who were disappointed, and I can see their reasons why, I also know many more for whom TROS is enjoyable - with that enjoyment being anything from 'fun but flawed', through to 'favourite star wars film'.

All the 'you're better off never watching it' type of discourse is very reminiscent of things said in 1999 to 2005, and look where we are now with that trilogy's revival.

Maybe, but it’s true in this case. As Garwoofoo said up thread, the third film sticks a pin in the bubble of the whole trilogy and everything invested in it until that point vanishes into nothing. What a waste of the OG cast.

Rise of Skywalker is far from perfect and was a bit of a botch job script-wise, but worse than Attack of the Clones??  Absolutely no chance.

The sequel trilogy wasn't as good as I had hoped for but I'm pleased that the TV stuff on Disney + has been so much better and reignited the hope I had for Star Wars when Disney first got hold of it.

Yeah, absolutely this. AOTC is Cats-bad.

This is the Star Wars people that don't like TLJ wanted, presumably.

Saying this as a fan of TLJ, I loved The Mandalorian (and even got some enjoyment out of The Book of Boba Fett.) General consensus among most people is that The Mandalorian was a crowd pleaser and a return to form.

I wonder if talk of Rian's Trilogy being delayed was only put out there to gauge reaction because if it was any faint whispers by those interested were drowned out overwhelmingly on sites, videos and social media saying this would be the worse thing ever. Leaving aside the current leadership (I think they're doing a great job personally) I think the choice is out of their hands. I've said it before but Rian looking at the reaction this week would surely look to two possible futures and probably keep making mysteries where he's loved and has full control rather than return and do another Star Wars movie where there would be a hostile response even before the first poster was previewed.

I think it's a shame that they didn't have an overarching plan / director for the entire FA trilogy. Different writer / directors might well have worked with A New Hope - Return of the Jedi (although things might have been very different for the last instalment had David Lynch not been busy with Dune) but from what I've heard Rise dropped all the stuff that made The Last Jedi interesting while managing to do it in such a way to annoy both people who loved and hated TLJ.

Attack of the Clones is extremely bad as well but at least there's a decent concept in there that just didn't quite manage to make it to the screen.

The prequel trilogy tells a coherent story, it's got great visual design and it was extremely ambitious for the time with its special effects and use of digital film-making. I mean it's also got terrible dialogue, not one but two appalling actors playing Anakin, a lobotomised Natalie Portman and Jar Jar Fucking Binks, but there is something good at the heart of it all.

The sequel trilogy is an incoherent piece of nonsense that had no idea where it was going from the beginning and mostly relied on chucking stuff you'd seen before at the screen in the hope you'd like it. The Last Jedi at least tried to do something different, only to see all its good ideas thrown away by the film that followed it. I don't think Rise of Skywalker has any redeeming qualities at all, it's a terrible film.

The key thing for me is that the prequel era is ripe for further story-telling, and we've seen The Clone Wars, Rebels, Jedi Fallen Order and a whole range of other media using that as a starting point. No-one's going near the sequel era at all, there's nothing interesting there.

It's so bad I've only ever seen the next movie in Lego form on the PS2. However loads of 20-30 year olds LOVE AOTC, see it as an entry point into a great series and loathe TLJ more than anything else.

I was the same, I only saw Revenge of the Sith quite recently. I'd avoided it for years having seen Attack of the Clones. It's actually quite decent, easily the best of the prequels and well worth your time.

I liked Rise of Skywalker. It had a fun, Amblin / Goonies / Drew Struzan poster kind of vibe, with all the lush environments, treasure maps, ancient temples and storm-wracked ruins. And I liked the Kylo Renn / Rey scenes a lot, especially the whole sequence that goes from Rey going into the remnant of the second Death Star through her fight with Kylo Renn, all the way up to the force ghost bit. The other characters were largely sidelined, but on the whole I really enjoyed it. My son loved it, too.

Yeah, at least the prequels have a genuine intent, whereas the sequels feel calculated and cynical. Particularly the Abrams ones.

I hate the sequel trilogy, but, I’m not the target audience.

TFA set up little story to progress, TLJ ignored it and did something else, ROS ignored both. Completely disjointed, utterly awful. I am a TLJ hater, It did try to do something different, but I don’t think it had good ideas. At the time I saw it, it put me off Star Wars completely. Ultimately it doesn’t matter, I’m not going to watch any of the sequel trilogy films again anyway.

I did enjoy Rogue One.

I don't really like any of the 'modern' films, Rogue One, Solo, TFA, TLJ or ROS.

TJL tries to continue some story from the originals and even the prequels.

The Abrams films are just utter shit. A remake and a seat-of-the-pants freeform jazz film. Makes me wonder what he saw when he saw the originals - just action?

RO and Solo try too hard to fill out unimportant story (the former) or pay homage (the latter).

They all, to some extent, feel as irrelevant as the videogame plots.

I'd like to see a new trilogy based around the First Order Audit and Accounts department discovering that, after spending a breathtaking amount of credits on the construction and manning of Starkiller Base, they could have just hyperdrived some end-of-service-life spaceships into planets instead.

"And the best part about it Supreme Leader Snoke, is that we can write them off against tax."

In the future, once the research is done, we will be able to do a complete personality-type assessment just by getting someone to rank all 9 Star Wars movies.

I reckon I will be one of the rarer subtypes.

Hmm. I think a comedic take would be refreshing after the po-faced seriousness of the recent trilogy and stand-alone films.

Didn't Lord & Miller attempt that with Solo? Then Kathleen Kennedy shit herself, fired them both and brought in the blandest director in the world to "fix" it.

I don't want to see a comedy Star Wars film in the same way that I don't want to see comedy Indiana Jones or comedy Bond films (we've had a bit of comedy in both of those franchises and it didn't really work).

Star Wars is adventure fantasy and that's what I want to see - a bit of swashbuckling and some space battles.

For me the biggest problem with the Star Wars 'universe' is that it all feels so small. I don't care about Skywalkers or Palpatines anymore.

I enjoyed Mandalorian. It's more that everything has to be packed to the gills with fan service and the small universe syndrome is just tiresome. The most interesting thing TLJ did - "the jedi, the sith, let it all die" is never going to get explored. Instead we're all going to coo over Baby Yoda and wonder at how every vaguely heroic person in the universe has met either Obi Wan or Luke at some point in their lives.

I liked the first season a lot more because while it leaned heavily on existing iconography it still managed to mostly feel it’s own thing. It was a really fun adventure of the week with a loosely connected through line. It was like a fondly remembered 80s/early 90s adventure series but with a much, much bigger budget. Season 2 still had its moments but fell down the corporate synergy hole. Every other episode felt like it was a backdoor pilot. Characters from the expanded universe would slide into an episode in a way that reminded me think of when they'd open the door in Friends and a big celeb would be stood there and the audience would go 'Woooooooooooo!'. Talk following each episode noticeably shifted to wondering who would turn up next from cartoons/novels/comics than the actual adventures of the titular character. It's the same with Marvel, I've started to find those films exhausting as more and more they feel like you've spent half your viewing time watching a trailer for upcoming attractions than an actual story.

I feel like I should have liked the Mandalorian a lot more than I did, but it never really clicked for me. The tone was all over the place, in that one minute you'd have some very broad comedy - uh-oh, baby Yoda's going to eat those biscuits! Don't eat too many and get an upset tummy, Baby Yoda! - and the next, there'd be some really quite brutal fighting, or a subplot about medical experimentation. You'd have one episode that felt like Rogue One, and the next would be more like Caravan of Courage.

I felt like I couldn't watch it on my own because the storylines and characters were too simplistic to be really satisfying, and I couldn't watch it with my son because you'd see stormtroopers' heads being blown off.

I've started watching The Mandalorian recently and am enjoying it so far. I like the smaller scale of it compared with the films, and the fact that it's essentially a 12-rated western with sci-fi elements. It reminds me a bit of Battlestar Galactica, before it went shit. Mando is a personable character, which is especially surprising when you consider that you never see his face.

The best thing about it, however, is that the episodes are only 40 minutes long.

Each to their own I guess. I'd rather have Filoni Star Wars (including Rebels, Bad Batch etc) than the car crash of the sequel trilogy.

https://hard-drive.net/planned-rian-johnson-star-wars-trilogy-put-in-carbonite/?

Quote

The once planned trilogy of Star Wars films from writer/director Rian Johnson has reportedly been frozen in carbonite, to be stored in a remote Disney location, sources have confirmed.

“This isn’t how I thought this would go at all,” said Johnson, as he and his ragtag group of friends were led away from Disney headquarters. “They called me in for a meeting, and then my producer turned on me? Next thing I know they’d taken all of our storyboards and conceptual art and thrown them into this giant machine in the ground. We barely escaped with our lives. I’m so sad we may never get to make these movies now.”

Star Wars executives defended their decision to confiscate the materials and freeze them in the liquid substance.

“Following the polarizing reception to The Last Jedi, it’s best we do it this way,” said Kathleen Kennedy, president of Lucasfilm. “Rian says he would double his efforts and make sure he made something that would please the audiences, but we do not share his optimistic appraisal of the situation. Now we must find him.”

Force Awakens was great for its Lost approach to story telling but the biggest cock up was the knights of ren.

They ended up being bigger jobbers than Bobba Fett
