Rian Johnson Star Wars trilogy (probably downgraded to Disney Plus featurette)

Recommended Posts

Ryan Johnson killed his chances of making another SW movie as soon as fans started reacting to TLJ. Movies are business, and he was bad for it. Disney just let him write up some scriptments to complete his contractual obligations. So no surprise that they have quietly been killed.

i think they should have limited the supply of these films at the beginning and create a big top secret roadmap that would roll out over the next thirty years. Would have been very on-brand.

Someone up thread said R1 should have been first out the gate and I totally agree. Get a stand alone movie out whilst crafting a cohesive arc for the new trilogy. Let everyone know that it was a starter before the main. It would have still done gangbusters and those final scenes with Vader (and a lesser extent cgi Leia) would have got the fans ravenous for the new trilogy opener. And hopefully they would have baked the story and arc for longer to boot. It's all wishful thinking, and I so wish they had a more cohesive story for these new films. There are so many awesome bits across TFA and TLJ that to think if they had treated the story with more care we could have had something truly special, instead of ok (TFA) and mostly unlikeable (TLJ), in my case. Even if you love both films you must surely note that the planning for the trilogy was poor. Fuck silly agendas or any anger about casting etc though. I'll be in the queue for 9 but I'm glad they'll be taking stock after it.

Man, I really love Rogue One.

Has his trilogy been cancelled then or just put on hold until he’s actually written it?

I wouldn’t be averse to seeing him off doing something involving new characters in another part of the galaxy without the baggage of having to deal with the past or what another director had setup, which he so painfully had to show us how much he hated to the point TLJ became more about his ego than the story at hand.

A lot of people liked his direction and that’s cool. The Star Wars universe should be big enough, and it’s certainly aesthetically and thematically rich enough, to handle a good story that isn’t rooted in the Skywalker lineage.

I can’t be the only massive SW fan who’s really glad that they’re putting the films on hold for a few years?

A new SW film every three years was plenty. One a year, whoever was making them, and wherever they sit in that faraway galaxy was too much. It’s mythos is rooted in its relative rarity, and the tantalising wait.

I’m quite sad really. Mainly because I’m sick of MCU films, and there are no other movie franchises that excite me quite like the new Star Wars films have.

I’m not bothered about the spin offs, Solo and the like, and I have no interest in any more origin stories. But I don’t see why the series should be put on a ‘hiatus’ as such, unless it’s just until they find someone competent enough to come up with their own trilogy set in the Star Wars universe. James Gunn perhaps, or Taika Waititi? I dunno. I find it hard to believe there’s nobody out there who can come up with something worthy of the Star Wars name.

Couldn’t agree more. The spin offs have been awful, they clearly took on more than they could control. What’s staggering is what this will cost Disney given they bought the brand to bleed it dry, it’s a clear sign they know if they carried on with the dismal quality of Solo and Rogue One they’d damage the investment beyond repair

Please no, he’d play the imperial march the entire running time.

I’m not a fan but it scarcely matters, the machine will chew up and spit out directors. I had such high hopes of what Gareth Edwards , Lord and Miller could achieve, but this is clearly a company with majorly dysfunctional management.

Whatever they do, they need to move on from HEY REMEMBER THE THING as the driver of the franchise.

JJ is King of HEY REMEMBER THIS? That whole trailer was REMEMBER THIS? WE BROUGHT IT BACK FOR YOU

The weird thing is, those have been the weakest aspects of the force awakens. I wish to hell they’d left all the original cast out. It simply didn’t need them. I still cringe watching most of it. Rey and Kylo are wonderful though and can comfortably carry the franchise, so long as there is a better villain. And the Falcon. Keep the Falcon.

TLJ is a different beast. I think Luke played the part of deadbeat Yoda beautifully, and as for Yoda... loved him, i did

This news and the awesomeness of the new trailer is just going to further cement the fact that TLJ was a fucking abortion of a movie.

Shame Rose is coming back to further shit on the story with her blandness, hopefully she's JarJar'd and just appears briefly.

I'm hoping for a larger part for Fin and hopefully he and Rey get it on.

(I agree about wanting a bigger role for Finn though.)

Or at least have a basic roadmap of where the story was going after it. They didn't.

At this point in time it should be clear that JJ Abrams just makes long story arcs up as he goes along. Anyone handing over creative control of an epic space opera to a man that can't coherently tell the story of a group of people stuck on an island probably needs their head checked.

It’s brilliant news. It means they actually realise they’ve not reached the quality expected for a lot of people and I think it’s sensible of them to get a compelling story arc in place before going again. Making it up as you go might have worked for George Lucas, but he still had a singular vision, despite his tweaking of the storyline as he went. It absolutely hasn’t worked for this trilogy though, where we’ve had directors pulling in totally opposite directions.

It’s not about hating The Last Jedi, well it certainly isn’t for me - although I wish I’d have liked it, it’s more about them being sensible with the franchise’s future and that’s a good thing.

This is spot on. I'm someone that liked TLJ (although my rating of it lowered after a 2nd viewing) but the fact they went into this new trilogy without a clear path and using different directors/writers who all had different ideas of what they wanted made it all a bit of an incoherent mess.

They should have brought in one team and signed them on for all 3 films.

In the same interview Bob Iger says that they have Star Wars movies in development and Kathleen Kennedy said both Johnson’s and the GoT guys trilogies are going ahead.

Which is the opposite of what he says in the first part of the interview. They both can’t be true.

A bit of housekeeping. Can we please not have this degenerate into the negging and criticism of posters who didn't like The Last Jedi? Play the topic, not the poster.

Just to reiterate this again as I’ve noticed some of the posters who’ve criticised TLJ getting major negs again. Please don’t do this, people are allowed to express contrary views.

And people are allowed to disagree. If the haters are bringing up their dislike of it again, a neg is easier than derailing the thread in pointless back and forth debates/arguments. How is it any different than giving their post a pos from those that agree TLJ was bad?

Maybe if it's not worth commenting in response it's not worth the neg?

Maybe it's the same circular argument that's had a thousand posts already so it has already been commented on a thousand times so people are just using the neg or pos instead of posting the same thing in response yet again.

The issue with The Last Jedi thread isn’t that the people disagreed about whether the film was good or not. It would be a pretty boring thread if everyone agreed and were just going super, smashing, great about a film. Personally I enjoy reading different views on films. The TLJ thread in particular got nasty as there was a small group of posters who insisted on assuming the motivations of anyone who disagreed with them and 'othering' them. Didn’t think the film was great? That means you're a manchild who just wanted Matrix style kung-fu action or hung up on the original films or racist* or misogynist* or (in a particularly low point on the forum) autistic. Basically attacking the poster and trying to shut down discussion rather than debating their actual point of view on the film. Then the person who received that response feels aggrieved and starts responding in turn and the whole thing starts to spiral.

* Racists and mysogynist chuds didn’t like the film. Hell they don't like most things that dare to have women or people from another country in prominent roles. But that doesn’t mean that the Venn diagram of people who didn’t like TLJ that much and gamergate types is a complete overlap.

Just to say Harsin, I got accused of that when the reality was that I was saying that some people had some fucked up reasons for hating TLJ. I even went to lengths to explain that I don't think that most people on rllmuk felt that way.

Even though I explained that, I still had a couple of posters get really angry with me because they were sure I was talking about them, calling them out - and also everyone who didn't like TLJ - as misogynists.

I'm not saying that what you're saying never happened (no idea really, may well have done), but there was definitely some people taking black and white sides over TLJ, and nuance was often lost. A shame for sure.

Kevvy Mental literally said disliking the film made people racists and misogynists.

Must have missed / forgotten that. Dumb shit if he did. Got a link?

Edit: Searching for 'Rey', 'women', 'racist' and 'misogynst' under Kevvy Metal posts doesn't suggest he did. Although the forum search isn't great.

Then why bother making the neg? It's going going to make someone look at their opinions on a film and suddenly say "oh, I guess I'd better magically like this then."

I get the temptation but in any thread involving TLJ you've got posters almost neg stalking anyone who didn't like TLJ. We're not getting negged for talking about why we liked TLJ in these threads, I don't think people who express why they didn't like it or why Disney needs to stop making movies like that should be negged when pretty much everyone here is arguing in good faith.
