Rian Johnson is just trolling. Disney is not going to be let him anywhere near SW again.

You’re half right. It appears that he is making a new trilogy that doesn’t include any existing characters from the Skywalker films.

You can either read that as Disney having a lot of trust in him creating a new branch of Star Wars without nostalgia to boost him or you can read as Disney being contractually obliged to get him to at least write some scripts while not trusting him with any established characters or lore.

I can’t seem to find any evidence yet of him trolling.

In that case the end result could easily be the most interesting thing to come out of the Star Wars concept since the original movies. What's holding this franchise back is its constant fear of distancing itself from the tired old Skywalker soap opera.

Also an update on the other Star Wars trilogy by Dungeons & Dragons (sorry, but that's how I read it every time they're referred to as "D&D"). It's being reported that their deal has been altered; pray no-one alters it any further:

I know it's petty, but if the result of them rushing the end of GoT in order to make Star Wars stuff for Disney is that Disney now want them to have less involvement in Star Wars, then...

Rian Johnson has made some very vague comments that seem to suggest he's still working on Star Wars things. Unfortunately there's not much to go on because the article only quotes his response; it might have been useful to include the interviewer's question for context, to see whether they specifically mentioned a trilogy of films:

https://observer.com/2019/08/star-wars-rian-johnson-trilogy-knives-out-tiff/

It's pretty much stated that was what the response was about:

Quote

So for Rian Johnson to boast one of the Toronto International Film Festival’s most anticipated premieres with the murder mystery Knives Out, while also working on a discreet new series of Star Wars movies for Lucasfilm, you know he must possess that “it” factor Hollywood craves. While speaking to Observer ahead of Knives Out‘s debut next month (when we’ll have additional coverage of the film and more from Johnson), he discussed the freedom both projects afford him as a storyteller.

Following his work on Star Wars: The Last Jedi, Johnson will now create an entirely new story that is disconnected from the main Skywalker saga.

All the haters must be loving the crow pie, as if there was ever any real doubt that Kathleen Kennedy would let her golden boy get kicked to the curb, much in the same way the internet gossip mongers were spreading FUD about her position at the company, she'll leave when she feels like she's had enough and not before.

Agreed that's what the article suggests, but it's possible that could just be an assumption by the person who wrote the article. I'm not sure if the author and editor were being completely attentive to their choice of words, since they wrote "discreet" (which they could be using to refer to the type of secrecy that surrounds blockbusters, but I doubt it) where I think they meant "discrete" (as in, separate from the Episode-numbered Skywalker saga)!

That's why I wondered if the questioner had specifically asked about the previously-announced trilogy, or had just said something vague like "the new Star Wars project you're working on".

To use an absurd example, for all we know the questioner could have said "So, Rian, your Star Wars project has been downgraded from a theatrical trilogy to a short film on Disney+. What's fun and challenging about that?" and we wouldn't be able to tell from his answer! ;)

Anyway that's why when I linked to the article I said "he's still working on Star Wars things" not "he's still working on a Star Wars trilogy".

Selectively quoted as the basis of my new youtube vid "Rian cancelled! Again!" (Pulls weird face, plants random arrows on splash screen.)

As mentioned elsewhere https://au.ign.com/articles/2019/10/29/benioff-and-weiss-star-wars-movies-not-moving-forward-game-of-thrones?

Game of Thrones showrunners David Benioff and D.B. Weiss are no longer working on a new Star Wars trilogy. As reported by Deadline, Benioff and Weiss "cited their historic deal with Netflix" and explained that "their enthusiasm for Star Wars remains boundless but, regrettably, their schedule is full up."

“We love Star Wars,” Benioff and Weiss said. “When George Lucas built it, he built us too. Getting to talk about Star Wars with him and the current Star Wars team was the thrill of a lifetime, and we will always be indebted to the saga that changed everything. There are only so many hours in the day, and we felt we could not do justice to both Star Wars and our Netflix projects, so we are regretfully stepping away.”

This sounds like the Rian one is on shaky ground too..

https://www.yahoo.com/entertainment/rian-johnson-says-his-star-wars-trilogy-is-happening-121251964.html

"“We’ll see. I am still talking to Lucasfilm and they are figuring out what they are doing. We’ll see what happens. I’ll be thrilled if it happens. I am working on my own stuff, too.”" and “...I have no update at all. But I'm still working with Lucasfilm on it, and they're figuring out when they do what and everything.”

Guess people in charge of multi billion dollar movie franchises take notice of stuff like that.  If you screw up  by rushing for a deadline, then it’s a gamble that you are really going to deliver a quality product to time and budget for them? That last season of GOT might well end up being a massive millstone on the rest of their careers.  To which I say good, serves em bloody right.:bye:

Is that what happened with the last series of Game of Thrones? I thought the shorter length of the series was down to the sheer cost of all the battle scenes, and the decision to end it after eight series was due to the expense of extending the contracts of the now much more expensive main cast.

By all accounts HBO were willing to give them all the time and budget they could need. Problem was that they didn't want it.

Disney don’t want a sniff of negativity around any future SW movies. I think we may not see another SW movie for quite a while - well at least until fans start demanding they want to see more silver screen adventures in a galaxy far far away.

Amazing how such a sure fire win as buying the SW saga has been completely mishandled by the best minds in Hollywood. Will make a fascinating behind the scenes read one day.

I know you are and goet verdomme are you better at English than I am at Dutch, I just wasn't sure if I was totally missing the joke. Not trying to be a dick :D

Thanks for the compliment, and I recommend hanging around on a Dutch forum for more than a decade to massively improve your language skills! My Dutch logic was this: K was referring to the books towards the end instead of the books at the start. Thus, a choice between two things/concepts, and therefore 'latter'. :(
