Ahaha, I knew you'd have gotten a 1st place finish already. On your first go though? You make me sick.

Sorry (I’m not sorry).

Once question though, the article linked to earlier implied that it is only lines of 2 or more than get sent to other players.  Is that true?

Assuming it’s working on the established Tetris rules (which it seems to), the simple answer is yes.

That said, if you clear lines (including single line clears) with consecutive pieces you’ll start a combo which also sends lines. The longer the combo goes the more lines are sent.

Well I've spent ten minutes or so trying to get into the shop so I can buy a month of online, but its not working. Not exactly encouraging for their general online stability when I'm trying to play a game with a hundred other people. Maybe there's something in my walls or the Switch hates my router, but these are the exact same issues I had with online connectivity on 3DS.

I downloaded this before work this morning and had a game before leaving. First place, with 14 KOs! I set the targeting thing to KO and left it as I guessed it would target higher stacked players. Looking forward to playing more. It’s a shame the controls aren’t customisable but I soon got used to it.

Who'd have guessed Mr 7th in the world would be good at this too... ;);)

Well done! Rllmuk represent!

Managed a few goes last night between finishing work and getting to bed. 8th was my best, but I loved every moment. Hope this has legs t last.

I did feel at times I was being targeted so need to work on a defence strategy. Which would appear to be having a long piece in reserve. But that means I can't use the T-Spin and have to wait on a piece falling instead.

Could do with knowing what clears do what damage to opponent,  It certainly requires a very different strategy to 1vs1 Tetris for sure.

If you want an offline Tetris, then hand over some money to SEGA for Puyo Puyo Tetris. It is the best version of Tetris in recent years.

Pretty sure it's on sale on the eShop just now too.

(Also that better not be a sly dig at Tetris Effect).

Yeah on one of my goes I tried building a side gulley (2 wide) and got a good combo going and with my attacks set to KO I managed to get 7 from that. Previously, set to random and just trying for Tetris clears I got 2-3 KOs at most.

Oh, has it been removed? Must learn to read! Yes get it if it is on sale for sure.

And no... I have no PS4 so haven't played Tetris Effect :( However, I still look at that as a variant of the game, rather than a standard version. I could be wrong though and will know when I get to actually play it. It would likely be my GotY 2018.

By the way...

GotY 2017: Puyo Puyo Tetris
GotY 2018: Tetris Effect

GotY 2019: Tetris 99

Also, if this is a success.... Puyo Puyo 99, Panel De Pon 99.... Droplitz in any form

I’ve just concentrated on going for Tetrises so far, with opportunistic T-Spin Doubles (mostly because I forget the controls at the start of each match and mess up openings). It’s served me well so far with 4 wins from 6 games, and the other two were second places.

I’ve not been targeting anyone specifically, just switching between KO and attackers. I think the incoming garbage clear is generous, or clears multiple attackers’ garbage equally. There was one point I had 12 incoming lines and cleared them all with a single Tetris.

I've just found out Tetris 99 is developed by Arika. That automatically makes this the best playing/feeling version of Tetris in years.

All the Pros are freaking out, and hoping (again) for a grand master title next.

This also may not be true given some of the games I’ve had. Further investigation is needed!

Had an awful run this morning, finishing between 50th-20th and getting hammered with attacks. Felt like I was being specifically targeted at times

If you have lots of KO’s (or are a high rank apparently) anyone targeting “badges” is more likely to target you. I had a game earlier where I felt the same as I had 6 people at once after me

That makes sense. Suppose I'll have to adjust to counter that then.

So how does this work then? The trailer is really vague. You play on a normal Tetris field and can send junk to other players when you clear lines? How do you do that? Confused (note I've never played any multiplayer Tetris before)

Basically yes. If you clear two or more lines you send Garbage Lines to other players - these appear at the bottom of their field and has a gap in a random spot. You knock someone out when you cause them to overstack (ie die), so you need to find a balance between building up to make Tetrises to clear lines but not being too high that an attack will kill you.

Before an attack hits you though you have a chance to cancel it out by clearing lines, this so instead of attacking others you’re stopping the attack on yourself.

Tetris 99 complicates things because there’s so many players and as such there’s various targeting methods in this depending on if you want to go on offence or defence.
