Tetris 99 - 31st Event: Kirby's Dream Buffet

Had 3 wins so far with a number of top ten finishes within that. The best suggestion I took from the Reddit thread was to start off Targeting and then move to KO in the final 50. Seems to work well, and final 5 just seems to be a case of building quick and efficiently and breaking down when you can. You can usually a couple of Tetrises within the space of a few blocks which will shut opponents down.

Can you clarify what you mean by targeting? Individuals or one of the other modes.

This is furiously addictive! I got to second in one game, I feel very lucky.

How do you do a hard drop? I did it once by accident, but trying to do it by pressing all the buttons and I can’t find it again.

Up on the d-pad will hard drop. :)

This game is brilliant. My wife has commandeered the Switch. So far we've had three 2nds. We'll get it soon!

I'd love to do some 1v1 with you at some point!

Gimme a shout sometime, I've PPT on PS4 and Switch (and Steam but I don't really like playing that one), so whichever is easiest :)

Had fun streaming tonight, despite playing really badly, so will do it again soon!

EDIT: I spent far too much time cheating death, but the best one was probably this one:

I am expecting to give you some easy wins, but will be nice to see what I can do to improve. I need to learn to get setups sorted quicker mainly. So will be a good test for sure.

Switch only here now, so that'll be the platform of choice, which makes for great practice on 99

Only tip I've got - I don't really do strategie,s whenever I try it goes wrong - is to try and keep a Tetris in reserve as much as possible.

I like playing on target KO, but might start targeting deliberately. The pieces move pretty slowly early on and you can actually play quite slowly at the start, be prepared to go quick as it drops into the top ten though. If you prep a Tetris combo then it probably is worth having a look around at who might be struggling, as you let the first four line fall into place.

When it goes into the top ten I switch to targeting Attacker.

In contrast to some other comments - playing this, I had no idea I was comparatively this good at Tetris.

I havent got a first yet but I usually come top ten and have had a second place on more than one occasion. Some people KO within the first minute, I’m not sure how that’s possible.

My other half just threw a hissy fit after coming in the top ten and on the next game, coming 92nd.

Sometimes I think you make one mistake and then the other players smell blood and make you pay for it.

I'm not too good at this, I'm averaging 50th. I've fluked a 17th place once but generally I'm struggling to better a 30 something. I've been watching videos of people with crazy good skill to pick up some tips. What I saw was witchcraft... What the shit is this, how did he get through that gap

At the start (and at any time during the game) you can use the right stick to change tactics. Pressing down targets attackers (sorry was using the wrong term), start with this and you'll give as good as you get. When you get to the top 50 or have a breather shortly after you can change to KOs so you're targeting weaker players. This way you initially just defending your corner and then you're actively thinning the herd.

I think the best tactic in terms of building is going for Tetrises (I have more of these than any other line clear type in my stats), and then when you can, build down to the junk open lines that are sent your way. Generally around the halfway mark if you can get to a junk opening quickly it'll continue to grow into a Tetris opening naturally as more are junk is sent your way.

One thing that I can't praise enough is how quickly this thing gets started. I'm a sad bastard and actually just timed it, and from booting up the game to being in a match took 46 seconds. Considering it's probably slower for me because of my location,  that's pretty nifty.

Really helps encourage the player to keep dipping in.

I came across what I'm calling the "Targeting Paradox" last night. I was set to target attackers, and I had a large number of people targeting me. As soon as I changed my target priority all but one stopped targeting me, I'm guessing they had also changed to target attackers at some point, and so we were only targeting each other in defence

I'm really enjoying this but I'm absolute shit at it. The Switch WiFi is crap, which is compounded by the crap WiFi in my house.

I dropped out 4 or 5 times last night.

I had a few devices with ‘shit wifi’ and the Switch was the worst but since an upgrade to a mesh based router I don’t have any devices with ‘shit wifi’ even the Switch. I had a decent Netgear router before but the mesh network is on another level and worth every penny.

Anyhoo, this game is insane and while I’m still win free I love it - if only I could actually get a go on the Switch :hmm:

My best is 12 so far. I'm at level 10 and really noticing that I get attacked way more, probably by people setting their aim to 'badges'? Makes me worry that as I continue I'm only going to become a bigger target and do even worse.

I really feel like Nintendo had no idea just how popular this would be, it's very rough around the edges with it's messy UI and lack of options. I'm someone who previously didn't even consider the online subscription at all as I don't enjoy typical multiplayer gaming but I got the sub just for this. I'm sure there are many like me, Nintendo must be over joyed. I just hope they continue supporting it, it could really do with some polish and extras.
