Tetris 99 - 31st Event: Kirby's Dream Buffet

Had another session this morning in the hope of breaking the curse of constant second place finishes. And I did! I came 99th.

It wasn't even a frustrated flurry of hard drops to end my own game; I got hammered by 8 garbage lines, then a further four, then more before I had any hope of defence.

I'm not sure if being a high level relative to others gives a higher probability of being targeted by the "Random" attacks or if maybe by chance a few other players picked me as their rubbish bin* from the off but it was an incredibly dramatic start; over in under 15 seconds and I had a genuinely great time getting pummelled. Then I was right back into it. Such a superb game.

First place still eludes me. I had a fair few chances yesterday morning but today it all felt much more difficult to even get into the top 10. Maybe I'll try again at a more sociable hour (I will actually be trying again every available waking hour of my life until it is done).

*I’d originally typed “garbage disposal” like some American off the telly.

This talk of 4 wide, isn't that a major problem when grey pieces come in underneath your towers?

Yes and no, it’s not an immediately deadly problem. You only get a game over when the piece can’t spawn without overlapping one that’s already placed (well there is another way but it’s incredibly niche). With a centre four wide the spawn piece won’t overlap so going for the combo always remains an option. The issue is that if you get garbage while the towers at each side are there it can be difficult to clear, and thus limits your play space for future combos.

Only had time for 3 games..... 8th, 80th, and 5th!  Definitely gets super stressful in the top ten.

What's a 'four wide'?

Four wide is a building strategy that leaves a gap of 4 empty spaces at either side or, preferable, in the middle. Once built you can send an incredible amount of garbage to other players by making a large combo, one line at a time. As alluded to in my last post, going for the middle as where the gap is is fairly safe from attack too.

This is a pretty good introduction to it if you want to find out more:

Second win and I loved this one.

Was under attack early and managed to survive and then just made my way through to the top 10, but without a single KO or any badges. Finally KO'd 9th place, then took down 45th, 3rd and 2nd to win!

I am looking at the results screen and I notice some players have a green dot above there KO position. Any idea what that means?

Yeah, 4-Wide is a risky setup, but it yields the best results.

I tend to start with a 5-Wide then later switch to a 2-Wide. Saving my T-Spin setups for my 2-Wide.

One move I still cannot get to setup is a T-Spin Triple, which is what will mean I am never going to be top tier. In all the years of playing I just cannot do it.

Wtf?

Yeah, if I don't adjust anything, change volume or channel on the tv, it gives a 60 second warning before going into standby mode, bastard.

I had to leave the Switch at work, otherwise I'd have been up all night playing Tetris, and I want to get started on Parasite Eve really :)

3 more 3rds tonight and still no win. I don’t know how to cope with the speed when it gets down to the last 3. It’s a horror show.

Whats the vest tactic with 3 left? Just hope you have a good setup and get a couple of quick tetrises?

Oh.... missed live. :(

Edit: HOLY SHIT...that recovery in the first game. How did you stay calm enough to pull it off!

I wasn’t feeling calm that’s for sure. That was quite a bit of luck, and I was lucky not to be attacked further while I was recovering.

Going to be going live again in a minute, I’m extremely tired but feel like doing some more.
