Tetris 99 - 31st Event: Kirby's Dream Buffet

I'm about 100 games in and still chasing that first first place. I came third in my début match and have managed quite a few seconds but I just haven't quite been able to take it all the way home.

I have no T-spins on record at all (and I'm pretty sure that's true on more-or-less every other version of Tetris I possess). I simply don't understand them, can't visualise them and never play them. I don't really understand why they score so highly, although of course I would say that because of the above.

Not sure yet if I prefer playing handheld or docked. I get on well with the Joycon controls (discrete buttons work very very well for this game) and it's nice to be able to target specific players on the touchscreen, but it's hard to divide my attention well enough. C-stick targeting works well enough.

Playing docked, I tend to use a Wavebird, both because it's a lovely controller and because it's far handier than taking the Joycons off and attaching them to the Joycon Grip.

Wish there was a way to stream to Twitch without a capture card or Xbox One, neither of which I own. That's a Switch problem rather than anything to do with this specific game, obviously.

At some stage my girlfriend is going to want her Switch back. I'm seriously considering buying my own when that happens. This game is worth any amount of money.

Just about the only thing I don't like is that there's no option to turn off the ghost piece. I've hated it in every version of Tetris since it was introduced, and this is the first one I can think of where I can't turn it off. I hope they patch it in.

I'm nearly 200 in with no win yet. (Multiple 2nd and 3rds) I'm taking today off to come in fresh tomorrow. (I'll be playing tonight)

I have no T-Spins either. About 20 Mini's. I watched a 3 minute 'simple' Youtube video on them and didn't understand a second of it.

I sort of feel now like I'm never going to win as I have peaked with my skills but I refuse to believe I can get to 2nd multiple times and not eventually do it.

When it gets that fast though it just seems like survival and luck (with the pieces you get) and hoping that you get some Tetris's and have full badges.

10th is my best. Usually I'm bombarded as soon as the game starts. I feel lucky to survive past the twenty first eliminations. If I do, I usually get between 14 and 20 every time. It's kinda weird but it seems to be a pattern.

What's the situation with the rights for this title? I'm intrigued to know if Nintendo can keep it on their platform, as it seems like it could be a break out hit for them.

This is the latest: https://tetris.com/article/186/tetrisreg-brand-announces-broad-expansion-of-worldwide-licensing-network-ahead-of-its-35th-anniversary-year

Also, you should watch both of these!

Both are fantastic docs on the game and the rights mess.

@bradigor Cool, interesting. Yeah, I've seen that top vid before, the rights are a tangled web for sure. It was very well known back in the 90s. So I'm guessing it's being licensed by Nintendo. But how much control, if any, does that give them over this particular incarnation of the game? Since presumably as publisher, they financed Arika to develop it.

You don't need T-Spins to win, I won my first game only going for Tetrises, they're just another tool in the arsenal. It's also not something to easily get your head around, I've been aware of them for well over a year and am still finding new ways to implement them.

Not sure, I am just hoping lessons have been learned over the years and we won't see this become yet another mess. Recent releases do give some hope that rights have been relaxed a little.

Puyo Puyo Tetris was still a rights management nightmare, as it could only be released in certain ways on certain consoles in the West because of Ubisoft's* contract stopping SEGA from doing a full blown digital and retail on all formats.

If I remember correctly it was like this.

PS4 - Physical Only (West) Physical / Digital (Japan)

PS Vita: Physical Only (Japan) / No release at all in West

Xbox One - Physical Only (West) Physical / Digital (Japan)

Switch - Physical / Digital (Worldwide)

Now I am not sure if the Vita part was due to Nintendo's handheld rights, or Ubisoft, but I blame Ubisoft here as Ultimate released on Vita.

Anyway. The one thing that should be written into any future contract is that EA and Ubisoft never be allowed a sniff of a deal with Tetris again.

The releases of Tetris Effect and Tetris 99 shows that there is a future for the game across platforms and we are seeing developers do new things to appeal to a broader audience. It is a shame though that we won't have either Effect or 99 on multiple formats, with the latter being Crossplay.

Yes this. Don't let them rule your thinking. Just have them in th eback of your mind, so if an opportunity presents itself, you can take advantage.

I've tested playing to maximise T-Spins and found myself getting destroyed. You want to focus on being able to create lines, combos and Tetris in any situation. Setting up for T-spins can leave you in a very dangerous situation. If that is all you focus on.

If you want Wumbo for example, you will see him abandon T-Spin opportunities completely if it is deemed too risky.

@bradigor Thanks for that. :)

I broadly agree, however I would say that depending on the licensing agreement, the developer should have some rights in the matter. Like all the best ideas, it seems obvious in hindsight, but aligning Tetris with the battle royale mechanic is genius. In this instance, if Nintendo drove the concept, financing and implementation, then I think it fair that they should hold a certain amount of say in its use elsewhere.

Things have gotten a lot more competitive, I’m lucky to make it out of the bottom half most times now and I usually get targeted by two or three absolute gits right from the off.

But it’s so addictive! Definitely hits that Switch ‘playing within about ten seconds’ ethos which is so effective at pulling you in for longer than you plan.

You’ve got to wonder if anyone at Nintendo had any idea just how successful this would be? A 35 year old puzzle game, stripped down to the basics and released into the wild in mid-February with little announcement and no marketing. Phenomenal stuff though.

I'm not usually one to call for the banning of videogames/think of the kids etc. but this actually is pure crack. Thank the lord they haven't monetized it somehow. If this was in arcade machines across the country they would be going out of order on a regular basis.

They have monitised it though - you have to buy an online sub.

Horrid run at the moment.Plenty of 2nd and 3rd spots but no win in the last 40 games. However, my KO's average has increased a little. I keep trying to be clever and getting punished for it, where I just need to keep it simple and just go for single and double lines if needed to defend attacks.

I would love to see some more stats available soon though.

No of times you have finished in each position

Avg finishing position

Finishing position graph per 10 games

Just things where you can see how you are improving or getting worse over time.
