Tetris 99 - 31st Event: Kirby's Dream Buffet

Gets you out of scrapes sometimes, but also get bonuses added to your attacks when you do it.

Simplest thing to try and do is stack your tetriminos up neatly and leave a single line gap, hold your four bar until your are ready to do a Tetris (or hold it in reserve and get up to 8 or more lines with a single gap) then when you spot a four bar in your queue do both.

Having said that I'll quite often switch between held pieces just because I've got something that doesn't fit well and what I'm holding is better.

Once you get towards the end though you want to be doing combos, one line after another. This game seems to stack up combos and count them down - so if you drop a tetris it counts for 4 attack lines, if your next next piece doesn't do a line, but the next one does it adds to 2 of your 4 attack lines previously counted as part of the Tetris. If you can go down through a stack doing line after line (singles are fine, but more are even better) then you stack up massive damage against your opponents - I think this does much more damage than a pair of Tetris drops.

Neatness is key though, minimise gaps that can't be cleared quickly by pieces in your next piece list and remember you can keep turning when the pieces are dropping quick to give yourself some thinking time.

Today I found out the gap in the garbage that is sent depends on where the person sending the garbage completed their line(s). Makes sense, just hadn’t realised before now.

Interesting, would that mean pounding combos is even more powerful? Giving someone a pair of Tetris drops, lets them come right back at you, while having a mismatch of spaces could screw them.

I've not noticed that. Pretty much all the garbage I get gives me an opportunity of  at least 2x lines. Not seen the following as garbage. It is usually neater than that. Or am I mis-understanding what you said.

Most garbage would have to be 2+ lines so a 2+ gap.

XXXXOXXXXXXX

XXXXOXXXXXXX

But if you combo, you can do it line by line, which could result in lines like you've drawn coming up, making it harder to come back.

I mean... If I've got this

XXXXOXXXXXXX

and this comes up

XXXXXXXXXOXX

XXXXXXXXXOXX

XXXXXXXXXOXX

XXXXXXXXXOXX

Then I have a little smile to myself, cos I know they've built me a neat Tetris to throw back.

Anyway most of the time when I'm knocked out it's because I get 4 lines then 8 lines then another 4 lines, then another 8 line.... booom boom boom, nothing you can doooo.

Buy Puyo Puyo Tetris... I cannot stress this enough.

Today is the day that, after playing Tetris since it arrived on my door step as a Christmas gift from America in 1989, that I actually used the "hold: function, I've played Puyo Tetris, The Grand Master 3 and countless iterations inbetween, always avoiding doing anything that I deemed not to be base gameplay, but looks like I need to move with the times, just not sure tetris Royale is the best place to learn it :p

Finally tried this tonight, after shaking off the rust I won a game on my tenth try.
Since then my results have been on the down because I'm trying to learn set ups. This feels like a ploy to get me to buy puyo puyo tetris so I can practice easier.
Might just do that tbh.

Also after playing some at a meet today it got me thinking. When's BomberMan 99?

Imagine the amount of squinting required, though.

The map would look the same size on screen as a normal game (or maybe somewhat bigger as we all have big TVs now), you could just have the boundaries closing in and in.

Impressed there are so many first places here. I got 3rd once and that was like, everything went well.

Regularly in the top 10, but just cannot grab a 3rd win.

Did manage a near death save and recovery in one game though. Was going on gut as I couldn't see the top line and managed to combo out of it. In that game I finished 13th though

125 games played and still no win. More top 5’s tonight.

It just falls to pieces when I hit the top 5. Blocks fall too fast.

I take it you just have to have tetrises ready to go right at the end to get bang bang bang knockouts? Being at the bottom of the screen getting singles at that point just doesn’t seem an option because you get hammered with massive garbage.

I'he nothing against the hold but I really don't like t spins feels like cheating and not in tune with the basic gameplay of arranging shapes to naturally fit together. A t spin rotates a block in a way that would be impossible in real life.

No, while a Tetris is golden at that point, if you can just keep hitting 2+ lines it's good enough.

I've got 4 wins now and each time, when it came to around the last three, the game actually becomes less hazardous. Fewer players to dump on you, and much quicker falling means everyone is working hard to keep on top of their own screen.

I've found combinations finished with a Tetris to be the most powerful finishing moves. If you can go two line, two line, two line, four line. Then it messes them right up.

I'm not sure I was right about the combinations holding value over missed lines, I think I was getting confused by the numbers you see when you're set to attackers, and possibly badge effects.

My partner refuses to use hold, because that's not how she plays Tetris. All because there was no hold in the GAMEBOY version.

Okay ...

I know that some are Earthbound Tetris gods, and we mere mortals can only watch on in awe. I also know, better than anybody, that there is a huge temptation for people who get beaten by what is just better play to look externally for things to blame other than "I'm just not good enough." Often, this comes down to "That other player MUST be cheating!" This is natural, I read it daily.

I'm not saying that this player was cheating. But, WHAT THE FUCK?

The top tier players will do that to you. They have an understanding of starting setups we can't even begin to comprehend. The likelihood is, they set up a T-Spin - Tetris combo in the time it took you to lay those pieces.

In other news, got a third place today after being in a battle with two others for what felt like an eternity. Initially pissed that I only got third, then saw the two who beat me go at it for another few minutes. I don't think there was any way I was winning that one. So will take that third as a victory!

I’m  rubbish at this, if I get in the top 50 I’m amazed :(

Excuse the noob question but I take it once the grey lines are on your screen you can’t get rid of them.

You clear them like any other line.

They can be wonderful for adding to a combo or getting a free Tetris.
