I downloaded it this morning, but didn't boot it up. It said it was "Free to start"... What's the monitisation on this? If it's cosmetic, that's fine. If it's credits, me and nintendo are going to have a falling out.

It's free with the online sub. No microtransactions or anything, at least as far as I can tell.

All I need to know is how to choose where I send my shit. Or, how to avoid being chosen as the one to whom said shit is sent! Played my 1st game just, while waiting for the girlfriend to get ready, and finished 61st due to a sudden drop of shit which filled my screen. There were "Watch out" lines from all over the place!

I can see a lot of gameplay while waiting for other stuff in this one. Matches are quick.

It's well daft that there is no tutorial and zero instructions explaining how all the battling  others stuff actually works.

I deliberately messed up and quit the two games I started last night because it's not obvious what the fuck is going on.

And really it should assume people won't have even played Tetris before and explain that stuff too.

I've now found a guide that explains things though, so I'll give it  another go this morning.

It’s a lot of fun as you’d expect and they haven’t missed the open goal of playing Tetris alongside 98 others, but it might be tough for reviewers to throw high scores at it when the package as a whole is so bareboned right now.

It shows stats for Tetris 99 and All so it looks like more modes will be added along with the massive potential for Nintendo themed DLC.

I’ve made it to 7th so far. My body may never be ready for the top ten speed increase.

Obviously, this is already the best battle royale ever.

I downloaded this before work this morning and had a game before leaving. First place, with 14 KOs! I set the targeting thing to KO and left it as I guessed it would target higher stacked players. Looking forward to playing more. It’s a shame the controls aren’t customisable but I soon got used to it.

Cheers. That's very helpful. I hadn't clocked that you can hold a specific item in reserve - I was really struggling last night but can see that helping a bit!

Heh, who'd have thought Grindmouse would be having a moan about something.

Isn't he moaning that the game should be called exactly what it's called??

This isn’t a BR game and would be more accurately called Last Man Standing or 99-1, but gotta jump that bandwagon.

I came eighth on my second go which got my heart racing. Its great fun, although I'm not sure how to target my near rivals when I'm frantically trying to fit the blocks.

I’ve just read that in handheld mode you can use the touchscreen to target people, as well as the analogue sticks.

Ahaha, I knew you'd have gotten a 1st place finish already. On your first go though? You make me sick.

I've had a half-dozen second place finishes and mostly end up within the final 10 however sometimes it gets utterly wild really early on with a barrage of garbage latching. It feels like there might be some strategy in avoiding back-to-back Tetrises early on to keep a low profile.

It plays a solid game of Tetris; nice and responsive. I wish the hard drop had more ooomph; it's a weedy "ptchew" at the moment, like a faulty raygun. I expect they'll be making money by selling cosmetic items though so maybe a few options will let you adjust that layer? They do mention "Upcoming Online Events" so I'm interested in seeing what those are.

The game is pretty bare as it is so I'm glad it's a free download. Playing online versus 98 others is the only mode available. You can't have a wee traditional game of Marathon alone. Matches were filled with a full 99 players really quickly (though some could have been filler AI for all I know) and it gets incredibly tense close to the finish. I made some hilarious mistakes when close to first place due to the pressure. I'm sure I can sneak in a game or ten before work.

Charging my switch now, then downloading. Of the targeting options, the one that targets people who attack you seems like the best option.

I'm not sure.  Assuming a lot of people simply target a KO then you might be being targeted automatically and hence targeting them back will not dissuade them. Focusing on the weaker players might be the best way to get into the higher places.

Once question though, the article linked to earlier implied that it is only lines of 2 or more than get sent to other players.  Is that true?

Yeah, a bog standard offline mode does seem a strange omission for a partly handheld portable device.
