Super Mario Maker 2 - New update adds worlds! (Forum Course List in First Post)

Can't wait! I do wonder how they'll handle taking a hit with the Link outfit though, if you turn back into Mario that's going to limit the options for dangerous elements in a puzzle based level, unless you provide a lot of swords in pipes. Ideally you'd still die in one hit as Link, or have 2 hearts or something.

Good point.

It would have been better if you could choose to play as Link for the entire level rather than just Mario.

Forgotten Temple

Here we go, my first crack at a Link level. It's a bit rough and ready but I've tried to cram in all of the various moves Link has. The difficulty is making it so that you don't get stuck if you loose the costume, but without making it overly easy.

By the way, they've changed the formula that's used to calculate Maker Score. Not sure how exactly, but it seems to be in my favour because I've jumped to a frankly ridiculous 22nd in the world on the leaderboard!

*EDIT* I found a horrible softlock so I've deleted it. Hopefully I'll have time to fix it tonight!

Walk The Dog

Have a Mario Maker level to get you through the misery of the impending Tory-pocalypse! This is built around the fact that spike balls follow you around at night in the ground theme. I wouldn't be surprised if it turns out to be a bit fiddly in places just for the sake of doing something with the mechanic, but let me know what you think.

And don't worry, the spike-dog doesn't die, it just goes to 'live on a farm'. ;)

I have been working on this one for a while.

That had a 0.10% clear rate until I beat it; it might be the lowest clear rate I've beaten so far. The recording cuts off the first ten seconds of the level which is a shame. The room at the end is ridiculous. You have no idea how many times I made it there and failed at the POW jumps. The timer is so tight there is no room for error at all. But it is fantastic fun so I'd urge some of you to go and give it a go at least. If you can make it to the final room I'd consider that a success in itself.

FEELS GOOD

Starfall Odyssey

S2N-LTB-6HG

This one is a platformer in a similar vein to Icefall Peak, but with a nice chilled bit sandwiched in the middle. It's currently on about a 5% clear rate, which is a bit tougher than I expected.

That level above looks cool, but way too hard for me!

Rainbow Rush Galaxy SP

XQK-VN2-M6G

Just a dumb fizzy speedrun. I actually uploaded this a while back but it totally bombed, so I've made a few tweaks to make it flow better, and added in some Pokeys and Spike balls because why not? Enjoy!

My daughter keeps going on about this, do you think it’s suitable for a six year old, not to complex etc?

I'd say give it a go. She's probably not going to be cranking out masterpieces, but if ever there was a level editor suitable for a 6 year old it's this.

@Stanley my 7 year old has made some pretty good levels that some guys from here have kindly played. He's well impressed with some of the times people have done his courses in. I reckon she'd be fine if she's used to playing other things on the switch. There's plenty of Nintendo intuition throughout which can be relied on to make most things easy to use.

Be expected to play lots of works in progress if she's anything like my son and come up with some really unusual concepts.

I bought this for my son a couple of months ago and never really bothered playing it myself.

I am not interested in building levels (I would be rubbish at it). I have played the one player a bit, and there is practically zero challenge, so its fairly dull.

I do like the sound of playing the really good levels that people around the world have put together, as well as the really challenging ones. What is the best way to put together a little “greatest hits” list?

A good place to start would be the top 100 makers list, if you go onto the leaderboards section and search makers by All Time Ranking. Some of them are just all speedruns and music levels, but most of them are pretty good. I'd recommend Frank88 for some pretty challenging traditional style levels, Nocturnowl for easier but very creative traditional levels, and Matilder for the best looking SMB levels you'll ever see. Mine are pretty decent too I think :P

How many of those have you done?

I found almost all the single player levels really innovative and they get much more difficult as you progress.

Has everyone given the new Speedrun a go?

I've managed 0:32.686 after spending an hour or so experimenting with different routes. I have a feeling there is something obvious I've missed because there is a weird spike at about 29 seconds in the rankings graph suggesting there's a quicker way of doing something that I haven't yet discovered. It's a great level, too!

I also beat this.

The stage is based on that Getting Over It with Bennett Foddy game. It might be the most unfair, and horrible level I have played, but I was making microscopic improvements each time, so my brain wouldn't let me let go of it. Sitting on that final screen and learning the timing of the moon's movements and I thought my heart might burst out of my chest. Instead of recommending you play it it's probably just easier and more fun to watch this.

Just managed a 0.27.879 which pits me at #1618 in the world rankings with two days left.

Pleased with that!

Slightly random question but does anyone know if @J.Pickford posts levels anywhere? I liked his stuff on MM1, and he's still on my Switch friends list from the Wii U days, so I can see that he's played a ton of MM2, but thanks to Nintendo's strange decisions there's absolutely no way to see what he's up to in game unless you already know one of his levels!

Icefall Canyon
3KR-RGM-C1G

I decided to expand on the downward scrolling lift section from Starfall Odyssey and make a whole level out of it. The difficulty picks up a bit towards the end but it's nothing too extreme.
This is my 4th level to use the SMB ice theme, I keep finding myself coming back to it! I think it's my favourite theme in the game, there's something about the combination of the music and tileset that I just love.

Watching all these versus Mario Maker 2 online videos makes me think they need a mode where one player's task is to complete the level and the other three players just have to interfere somehow. Kinda like Gauntlet in Gladiators.

Also to prevent everyone constantly fucking with each  other they should have a ghost mode so whoever has the best platforming skills actually wins.

Wow, this is not my level, but if you have the slightest interest in puzzle levels, you have to play this one. It's called House of Oob and it's the cleverest thing I've ever seen in Mario Maker.

Got completely stuck on this one in the room with the trampoline at the bottom. No idea where I was supposed to go.

I made a not very good first level (VTF-D90-Q2G) last week that I was too embarrassed to post here but I just logged on and it’s had 50 odd people play it and one even left a comment. That was a nice surprise.

I like levels like these that are just platforming. Would have liked it if it was twice as long though.
