About five zombies between the Youtuber and his mate "I can't deal with that many!" so he leaves her to die.

Yeah I was like WTF, they all just watched her die and even then she was stupid enough to say that guy screwed her over. Ridiculous.

It’s just shit. And doesn’t even deserve so much fucking chatter about it. Even though I’m adding fuel right now.

I think we need a Day of the dead thread so we can talk about a proper good zombie movie.

Really enjoyed this. Maybe because I’m not a strict fan of any other zombie movie. I find a lot of them pretty samey and it’s not a genre I go looking for deeper meaning in, nor necessarily appreciate the production and direction of. They’re not my type of horror film.

It has plot holes and people do stupid stuff for stupid reasons, (like the whole plan). But I thought it was knitted together well with decent pacing. And that makes it enjoyable for me.

I liked the characters. It can be hard to warm to cliches and stereotypes being so obviously forced upon you. But I actually gave a shit about the lock breaker, and believed in his resulting relationship with the black dude.
I know I should find the pilot annoying, but I enjoyed her delivery.

The daughter was a fucking imbecile.

If that's his frame of reference then he needs to watch more, better movies, specifically Aliens in the 1st instance.

This is just a longer, boring version of that movie that's quite mean spirited and has little of the charm of Aliens. One of the few redeeming features of this are the safecracker and the other dude having some chemistry.

Bautista has his head in his hands at more than one occasion and I'm not entirely sure it's because it's called for in the plot.

Why is Notaro comped into the movie?  Wasn't available at the time of production?

Chris D’Elia was originally in the movie. They had even finished filming. But then accusations involving underage girls emerged about D’Elia. Netflix cut all ties with him and removed him from the movie, replacing him with Notaro.

Oh wow didn't know that, thanks!

Would Paul W Anderson with the same idea (zombies heist las vegas, can do anything else with it) and the same budget make a better film?

Both "not great" directors so I'd imagine you'd just get a different flavour of "not great".

A friend told me its a rip off of Carpenter's Ghosts of Mars, is that true?

Nope although I can vaguely see the odd very tenuous parallel. it most obviously rips off Aliens (badly)

I'd rather watch Ghost of Mars if I'm honest.

In the first five minutes there’s an almost note for note rip-off from An American Werewolf In London, that’s for definite.

All of them are just hoomages, he's not ripping people off because he can't write for shit and this time he hasn't got a comic to base his film on. Definitely not.

Just an hoomage. I looked it up and a hoomage is when you ctrl c on someone else's script and then ctrl v on yours.

I've  given you a POS because not only do I agree with you but you've also provided some  education too with the copy and paste tutorial.

I started to watch this last night, and it was so boring I fell asleep about half an hour in. How do you make a zombie action film with Dave Bautista and Tig Notaro, and have it be boring?

As usual we have the Anti-Snyder haters dunking on Zak.

Zombie movies are dumb crap. He’s done something different with the genre and instead of praise he gets vague criticisms like it’s boring or it doesn’t make sense.

Switch your brains off and enjoy the ride. I loved it. It’s a homage to Aliens. What more could you want?

It doesn't remotely deliver on its idea, a heist with zombies in Las Vegas has the potential to be outrageous. There should have been laugh out moments, genuine tension, characters with charm you care about.

I am convinced every single person who has slated the film if given that premise, the same budget, the same crew and actors could make something that delivers more on it. I think everyone when developing the script would fall into a cliche and think; no i can't do that, i know by following some basic story structures it's inevitable sometimes but bad films are lazy like that, no I'm not going to do it. I think most will think; it's just insulting isn't it? People have watched hundreds of films, why throw back predictable scenarios everyone has already seen?

I think everyone just having half a day when combining heist, zombies and las vegas is coming up with something more than a scene with sleeping zombies, rituals, a heist where they just go straight to the vault and open the door, and an escape with some jumping and shooting on the casino floor, then some boring roof and helicopter action.

What Netflix has shown is that while everyone wants artist to have full creative control and do whatever they want, it can mean some are too into their own film and see things that aren't really there. The writers of this are going on about how it's fascinating that some of the zombies aren't explained, everyone else is just thinking it's more messy writing along with the whole subplot of a character's life and her survival not even being clear, something which was so unengaging anyway few people even bring it up.

When i think of studio executives, the ones at the top who greenlight films, i think of Kevin Smith's stories and Wild Wild West's big metal spider being something silly a childish exec would insist on. I don't really think of the many sound ones who will bluntly say; no that's shit. Or; no that's still not good enough, please re-think this.

Not that i think Zack Snyder had a great film in him with this, but the opening 15 minutes packed more ideas and humour in than the other 2 hours, its tone wasn't wildly inconsistent and it mostly made sense. I didn't expect much from the film but I'm more unfulfilled after watching it because after thinking about it i really want to see a heist in las vegas film with zombies done thoroughly well.

What’s he done with the genre that’s different? I guess making a zombie action film that sends you to sleep is unusual, but other than that it couldn’t be more by the numbers if it tried. And the bits where it isn’t are just junk.

Just to keep adding to the hate, if you edited this down to 1.5 hours it would possibly  be a much better movie - for example - in Aliens,  Burke gets offed in an scene that lasts approximately  1 and a half minutes or so - he does the sneaky escape ,  stuff happens, dead. In this the Burke avatar gets out,

Spoiler

does his dastardly deed re trapping them and then gets chewed up by the  zombie tiger

Both  scenarios serve the same purpose but in Snyder's version there's a gratuitous bit of torture porn that lasts an extra 2-3 minutes , is obviously CGI,carries fuck all weight and achieves the same outcome.  We didn't need to see Burke  getting tortured  unnecessarily to know he got his and is indicative of the pointless  largesse  of Snyder's movies in general. He could have been actually slightly different  and achieved the ultimate aim of the conclusion of the movie by

Spoiler

allowing said bad dude to escape with his prize and set up the sequel that way.

And that's just one example.

I was going to watch and try to engage with a movie this evening, perhaps even form an opinion on it. Then I decided that was too pretentious and wanky an activity, so I stared at a wall for two hours instead. Haters will say "wasn't that boring?" but I switched my brain off and enjoyed it. Going to save a fortune on cinema trips in future with this one simple trick that Hollywood hates.

Not that I agree with everything probotector says, but to me the actual funny thing is how people in this thread apparently are 'engaging' with the film and then mainly come up with great critical insights like "it was so boring I fell asleep lol", "it doesn't make sense!", "it should be more like this fantasy I've conjured up in my head!", etc.

‘It doesn’t make sense’ is the perfect observation. Correct, succinct, and gives the film the total critical insight it deserves.
