Ok. Maybe I missed something but then I don't understand why you feel it was "contradicted" a few episodes later when it's fairly obvious that the story isn't true just one episode later.

The story seemed fishy from the off, as well. Super baby can claw it’s way out of its mum but drowns in blood in 10 seconds?

Spoiler

I didn't doubt that the kid survived but that Becca did.

Am I right in thinking this series deviates quite a lot from the books? I don't think I'm going to read them because I really like the twists and turns this takes. Hopefully if they do another season they keep it to 8-12 episodes and don't bloat it out.

Deviates isn't really the word. The characters have the same names.

A lot of Garth Ennis’ stuff has aged like milk left in the sun. The series is far, far better than the source material in this case. It knows when to be restrained and when to use shock humour for great effect instead of just an endless stream of try hard edgelord gags. The supers are actual characters and not just thinly sketched walking excuses for constant dick and arse jokes. There’s a real sense of threat to them instead of just being punching bags to show how cool and tough the boys are. Ennis' love for squaddies are the greatest hardest people in the universe support arrrr boys has been toned down. The stream of homosexual slurs has thankfully been excised (but you see it’s ok because comic Billy actually likes gay people or something readers).

Yeah I remember loving these comics when I read them a few years ago, but re-reading them now, they are really mostly excruciating, particularly the non-stop homophobic slurs.

I still enjoy his runs on Hitman and Punisher though.

Maybe we might have to end up splitting this thread into comic reader ad non comic reader ala the GOT one. I for one have no intention of reading the comic, at least as long as the series is running. Heard too many negative opinions on it.

One thing I find fascinating with the ending of the series is

Spoiler

Becca and Billy's real relationship. I kinda hope they subvert peoples assumptions and show that their reality was not as idilic as Billy makes us think it was. We have only seen his pov so far after all. What if Becca did actually sleep with Homelander willingly, as he says himself? That would be a really fantastic drama to setup, given Billy's total commitment to the cause.

Spoiler

I think what happened with her and Homelander was probably consensual.

I don’t see why he would lie about it. Also in the footage that Mallory shows Billy she doesn’t look particularly traumatised, though I suppose she might have been in shock.

Yeah, I'd agree with that interpretation of the ending. Although keeping it somewhat grey is very much on brand.

Watched this in three sittings, and it was great. Makes me wonder if the upcoming Watchmen series might feel either redundant or too po-faced.

I watched the first 3 but wasn't really feeling it. I read the comics back in the day but never had any real love from them. But episode 4 was the one that hooked me - it was proper amazing stuff. Can't wait to finish it off this weekend.

I think the cast are mostly great - Frenchie and Homelander are particularly good - but Hughie is pretty weak. I get that he's supposed to be an everyman thrown into this insane scenario but he's so bland his scenes just drag.

I've rewatched the penultimate scene 5 times now ..it's utterly gripping each time. The performances are just note perfect.

If anyone is interested, Grace from beyond the trailer has an interesting video on the second season. I won't post it as she seems to get a lot of peoples backs up here, but it's on the tube if you search.

Why the hell didn’t they just make Urban's character Australian. They could have still had the same rough around the edges type with lots of swearing type as easily with a bluff Aussie and would have avoided whatever the hell he ended up doing.

Might have still had a few complaints from New Zealand though because that's where he is from not Australia.

Thanks Captain Obvious. What I’m proposing, and this might be crazy talk, is that actors can actually portray characters from different places to where they were born and Judge Dredd might have had an easier time putting on that accent and passing as an Aussie to your average viewer (as the two accents are so similar) and could still play the same type of character (better as an Aussie who would fit the same stereotype as opposed to general perception of New Zealanders); rather than the bizarre mash up of Kiwi and Frank Butcher we got.

In which case they should just have gone ahead and cast Murray from Flight of the Conchords as Butcher. And I don’t mean the guy who plays him. I want him in role as Murray playing Butcher.

“Hughie?”

”Present.”

”Frenchie?”

”Present.”

”Billy present.”

He's too old now and probably doesn't have what it takes to play such a leading role, but visually I always thought Vinnie Jones circa Survive Style 5 would be a great Butcher alongside Pegg as Hughie. The current Hughie is way too tall (he's the tallest dude in the group ffs!) and Karl Urban is not exactly a big dude.

But nitpicking aside, I loved this first season! They deviate from the source material in the best way possible. Can't wait for S2, and I genuinely wonder whether *that* twist from the comics will even remotely happen here in the show. I keep watching for hints but so far no dice. No idea where it is going tbh.

His accent is ass in this but I tend to enjoy him in things. He’s great as Bones in the new Star Treks.

Homelander is played to perfection in this. I’ve not seen the actor before but he has smashed this. It’s a huge part of why I liked it so much.

Have Amazon only just put the 4K version on Prime now? I went searching for it last week but it wasn't there.

It drove me nuts, I searched for it 10 days ago and wasn't there so watched first eps in HD, then it popped up a couple of days after I started watching as a recommended thing to watch in UHD.

Then it kept erroring out looking for the next episode in 4k so I had to quit the tv app and go back in and watch a couple more in HD.

The Amazon tv app is pish.

I managed to watch it all in 4K, but Amazon really don’t make it easy for you.

I dont know why why they can’t figure it out. If you try to watch the 4K series on a laptop it defaults to 1080p, why can’t they get it working the other way around instead of using two listings? (One of which is basically hidden).

I didn’t realise Starr is also Kiwi. He’s just spot on.

The HD version is all sparkly and resplendent with Dolby Vision/HDR

The swines would have to use a different HDR standard to Netflix, wouldn't they....I can watch Netflix HDR content with no problem but my 4K TV can't pick up Amazon's HDR encode..

The HD version is all sparkly and resplendent with Dolby Vision/HDR so it's probably not a huge difference but not releasing it on the same day is mystifying. I hope Amazon get their act together for The Expanse.

Its Amazon video, it'll probably only be available in pan and scan for a fortnight.

It was released on the same day, it's just that the app is shit and it can make it astonishingly difficult to find it.

It wasn't even in the search results when I checked, hence the confusion. Whether or not it's actually up is a bit moot if it can't be accessed.
