I think the main problem in the last episode was

Spoiler

Noir. They spent a lot of time building up his inner universe in the previous episode and have him rush about purposefully and back to Vaught, only to be unceremoniously killed. Maybe that was the point, just to show how it doesn't matter how much build up to what a character is doing has, Homelander by his mere existence can just cut nearly anything short when he wants to. And maybe that was intended to feed into the stakes later... But unfortunately its rather unsatisfying for the audience, as in this case it just feels more like having your time wasted, as we know what Homelander is capable of already, and we know the show has previously been open with upsetting the status quo.

Until it didn't.

Yeah, that felt anti-climactic in the same way that…

Spoiler

Starlight’s mega power up did. Sat there thinking ‘oh shit, we finally get to see what she’s really capable of!’ and it just knocked Soldier Boy on his arse for about three seconds.

Seemed like an utterly bizarre decision to

Spoiler

reveal that Maeve was in fact alive as well, especially without any form of explanation. I guess she may yet have a role to play, despite losing her powers, but within the climax of this series it just felt like a pointless rug pull. Oh, she's so brave sacrificing herself, lol, no, it was meaningless actually.

I did still enjoy it overall, even if it meandered a bit and the ending was a bit of an anti-climactic fudge. I presume that we're heading towards Butcher agonising over killing Ryan at some point in the next season.

That was surprisingly disappointing.

Spoiler

Would've given all the times her eye glow communicates a threat some extra weight, with hindsight. Or maybe she discovers that she's more powerful than she realised, giving her cause to fear what she's capable of and providing a legitimate threat to Homelander.

But no. As it stands she's about as convincing as the cartoon version of Jubilee.

Homelander’s public murder. Which is pretty much the government’s worst nightmare.

Spoiler

I’ve seen it said that given the relative positioning of surrounding buildings Vought Tower would be on 5th Avenue…

It doesn’t help the sound effect is pretty comical too.

Yeah, it was a surprisingly gutless move for this show.

Spoiler

I mean, how the hell would she had survived that fall considering she was de-powered about halfway down? Broken arm? Lol. Try broken everything.

Also re. Maeve:

Spoiler

With Kimiko, the show has established a quick shot of the OG V blue juice gives you all of your powers back in seconds and permanently. Completely undermining Soldier Boy’s gimmick, and meaning Queen Maeve could easily come back, though not sure self-healing was one of her strengths, so perhaps still with an eye-patch.

Feels like a mis-step. The rule should be when you lose your powers for any reason they stay lost. Blue juice doesn’t work anymore, but if you want to play the temp V lottery, help yourself.

Currently zero stakes.

Yeeeeah, obviously they can’t unring this bell, but I guess one way of sort of justifying it would be….

Spoiler

Revealing that, in season four, when they try to do the same for another de-powered supe it actually kills them. So Kamiko was just lucky enough to win the lottery twice when it came to surviving the V. Of course, this would come off a lot like plot armour.

I was watching a season 2 highlights just now, and I have a question about a side plot that season:

Spoiler

The whole church/Scientology place that they send Deep and A-Train to. What was the whole point of that whole sub-plot? At the end they kill the leader of the church (I can't remember why), and I thought we would find out more in Season 3, but no. I assumed the church would have some kind of role in the storyline but no? Was it just a sideline place to have some funnies with the Deep? Is it featured in the comics? Did I miss something or mis-remember something?

Spoiler

The woman who was dating The Deep and steering him was clearly a plant by the church, so I figure that will be more relevant in the next season if she takes him back with various conditions.

I was kinda hoping

Spoiler

That when Maeve jammed that metal rod in Homelander's ear in the fight at the end, it was going to cause some kind of brain damage, and that Homelander would become a vegetable, or insensible and even more unpredictable from that point onwards.

It would’ve been a nice touch if….

Spoiler

Maeve had lost the fight, died in the explosion, but left Homelander with a permanent injury like losing his hearing on one side. A final ‘fuck you’ that was another dent in his perception of being a god.

Spoiler

I’m assuming it’ll have a lasting impact that’ll make Homelander a little less deadly.

I thought the finale was great. A big punch up with all the characters is usually the point in a superhero movie where you throw your arms up and wait for the numbing inevitability of it all to play out, but in The Boys it was earned. The show has spent three seasons setting up the characters and their motivations - so to have all that tension released in a fun and kinetic action sequence was very satisfying.

Agree about Black Noir though.

Spoiler

Noir was aware that he himself knew the secret of Homelander’s heritage; going back to Homelander at that point was just incredibly risky and downright stupid, and didn’t make sense in the context of his running away.

About him in the future

Spoiler

Kripke has already outlined something about Black Noir

Spoiler

He said Black Noir will be back, but it will be a different person (but the same actor) wearing the suit. His personality will be a bit different.

After the season 3 finale they might be swerving back towards the plot of the comics maybe?

MASSIVE SPOILER

Spoiler

It's been mentioned that we haven't seen the last of Noir. And it makes sense that Vought would simply swap him out WWE style since he's a dude in a mask. So what if Neo Noir is... a clone of Homelander? I mean, they created him. Why would they only have one test tube.

Having said that, it's been established that unlike the comics Homelander can see underneath Noir's mask. That would make this plot point impossible unless they find a way around that.

Edit, further thoughts:

Spoiler

To that last point, maybe that's what the stab in Homelanders's ear was for? As mentioned earlier in the thread, what if that wound has a lasting consequences which not only throws off Homelander mentally - it also messes up his powers and he can't see underneath the mask anymore

hopefully if he does return he'll be less shit than babyface Doink.

I wasn't as disappointing as other people but I had no illusions that it wasn't going to end with the reset button getting a pumping.

Homelander going full-homelander in public and still being beloved by all his Qanon / January 6th followers was pretty funny. He's finally found the family he never had.

The scene with Frenchie and MM was great as well.

Putting Novichok in a cheap perfume bottle made me chuckle, who'd be stupid enough to do that? The comic was quite good at slipping in some real world horror as well.

I like Frenchie, but he's absolutely just a deus ex machina plot device. Whether you need hacking, or to identify a gas by sight, he's your macguffin. With a eart of gold and a built-in achilles heel.

I still can’t stand Frenchie honestly, there’s just nothing interesting there. Annoys me every time we have a scene with him in it taking up screen time.

I think what pissed me off about Frenchie is him always fucking jobs up. This was probably the first one he didn’t. MM was absolutely right when he said that Frenchie doesn’t stick to the plan and is guided by his emotions.

You saw it with tailing Lamplighter; setting Kamiko free; blowing their cover at the Vought facility; pissing about with the hamster in the Russian facility and triggering an alarm, etc. If I were MM I’d go mental about having to work with him as well.

I assume the consequence of the swimming pool scene is the role Homelander ends up in S4.

I think we saw the consequences of that scene at the end of the episode and it was the Neuman (Head Popper) being appointed running mate.

That was the favour she asked of Homelander in exchange Ryans address...

I’ve blitzed through all three seasons much too quickly. Overall I enjoyed it, but I was a little underwhelmed with the ending and I don’t think they did enough with Soldier Boy at all.

Also, I didn’t get the fuss over the Herogasm episode, although I did laugh a lot when Termite sneezed.

I think it’s because it was a big thing in the comics so fans of those were determined to have it be a big thing no matter what, as opposed to the mildly amusing/diverting side note it actually was.

Plus it featured a fight a lot of people had been waiting for, which did a fair amount to redeem the episode.
