It's not shit.

Wash your mouth out. Nor is Doom Patrol.

I'm really liking MM and Frenchie. Urban's accent is an utter travesty but his Butcher isn't too bad, although they seem to have massively reduced his IQ and bastardness from his comic version.

Starr is, as usual, brilliant and the best thing about the show.

RIP  Banshee :(

How does this compare to similarly profane "superhero gang" shows like Doom Patrol and Umbrella Academy?

Amazon have prefaced each episode with a warning page:

The following program is intended for mature audiences and contains Adult Content, Graphic Language, Graphic Violence, Nudity and Strong Sexual Content. Viewer discretion is advised.

Their capitals.

They then have a few logos included for good measure.

I don't think you can call Doom Patrol and Umbrella Academy "similarly profane". You can't even call Preacher similarly profane, in the way it's been brought to screen.

I was asking more in terms of quality than adult-rated content but it sounds ace either way. I'll start it once I've finished Doom Patrol, which will be tomorrow.

I just binged the entire season over 8 hours (and i don't remember the last time i did that).

Having never read the comic i can't do comparisons, but i loved almost everything about it. Thoroughly entertaining, and not overly-long like the standard 12 hour padded-out bullshit we have to sit through (hello Netflix).

Its by no means perfect, but its a cracking piece of TV, and a nice palette cleanser after all the MCU/DC superhero movies and spin-off shows that've been dominating our screens for what feels like forever now.

Also, laser eyes have never been more awesome than this. I'll say no more than that.  ;)

This is great, and this is from somebody who hates the Netflix stuff & all of the kiddie Iron Man & Avenger movies.

Totally agree it doesn't feel bloated or like it's outstaying its welcome with 3-4 episodes of 'fetch/escort side quests' or back story about how Homelanders cape was designed.

Love Homelander, he's the star for me, such a total piece of shit, Elisabeth Shue is really good too as the CEO type.

I've got used to the accent, even though occasionally it pulls you out his dialogue when he goes full Littlefinger and slips from Cockney to Australian Fosters advert.

That scene (predictable as it was) and it’s build up are the only tonal bum note so far (Ep4) for me:

Spoiler

In Ep1 The Deep is a rapist. By Ep3 he’s heading towards comic relief. By Ep4 he’s a clown, figure of fun, someone we’re almost being asked to feel some sympathy with. Rapist, remember.

Edit: Having finished it now (it’s amazing) I can see what they were trying for with

Spoiler

The Deep gradually paying for his crime with the public apology and then the random girl ‘violating his gills’ - never thought I’d type that - but his whole arc was a bit sordid and shit and tonally different to everything else. They should have found a better way to do that.

Yeah I watched the first episode last night and loved it.

I really enjoyed how they blatantly match up the Supes to Marvel and DC heroes.  I almost spat my beer out at :

Spoiler

Nubian Prince.

Also where they:

Spoiler

riffed the Wonder Woman music when he was infiltrating fake Avengers Tower.

Called the ending a mile off though, but still a cracking opener for the series.

I disliked the ending.

Spoiler

Depicting what was a very violent birth scene a few episodes beforehand felt like complete misdirection with hindsight, particularly as the narration is describing Becca's "death" at the same time.

By all means have the ending of Becca and the child surviving in secret but perhaps don't show us an actual scene of the baby ripping through her body and blood flooding the floor if you're going to contradict it a few episodes later.

Also have to agree with the depiction of The Deep.

Spoiler

Introducing him as a sinister, power-abusing rapist and turning him into a comedy character felt like a misstep.

Hoping to see more of Maeve's story in the next series and that Black Noir never says a word. Now I'm off to buy the comics.

There is a Humble Bundle for £12 for digital copies of the full run. Might only have a day left to claim it now.

Big fan of the comics, watched the first two episodes so far, really enjoying it, but could someone explain:

Spoiler

Why didn't they try any of the following on Translucent?

- Run a car exhaust into the room and attempt to carbon monoxide poison.

- Leave him locked in the trunk of the car and dump him in a river or something.

- Drown him by filling the room with water.

- Poison him in some way.

- Just fill the room with petrol and set him on fire, ok he wouldn't burn to death, but he would suffocate.

Didn't seem like it would be that tricky to be honest, but possibly I wasn't paying enough attention.

Just to flag for anyone intending to read the comic run now: even though the TV and comics seem very different, there's a pretty big twist in the last few comics that you might not want spoiling in the TV show.

Follow this advice.

Also stop reading after you meet Love Sausage and weep in despair that they didn't hire David Harbour as Vas for the TV show.

Binged it, loved it. Rogan said in the Preacher Comic Con panel that they will continue to pursue more comic adaptions hinting that one of the next ones they want to do was also drawn by Darrick Robertson.

No... say it's not so!

Transmetropolitian has a problem now. In the nineties, with the Nixon parallel with a bit of Clinton thrown in, it was just that far side of ridiculous.

Now it’s all that little bit too close. Less satire, more prophecy.
