The episodes I’ve watched so far I don’t think I’ve ever seen before. After 20 years I finally know why that guy’s in a wheelchair :D

I think when I started watching, both O’Reilly brothers were in it.

Red Sparrow is yet more young girl torture porn as "cinema".

Now TV is fine, but the quality is quite shite. The fact they're selling boxes in supermarkets with 4K 4K 4K all over them, and then in tiny white text on only one side "Now TV streams in 720p" I find a bit much.

I disagree. Most of the people who don’t seem to like it were expecting Atomic Blonde, or heard she gets naked and then found they couldn’t crack one off

i think the character she plays is perfect for #metoo, she has to do anything to survive and it’s gruelling, like Elle, but it’s supposed to be. It’s silly to suggest it’s exploitative IMO

Agreed. I'm still subscribed to the other two, but if I had to choose one it'd be this. I just prefer their selection and not force-feeding you certain films they think would be good in their sliding group interface they insist on. If you want, you can just browse them all or by restrict by genre. Lots of choice to keep everyone happy.

You can see all films available in particular genres on Netflix though, you just have to dig a bit deeper into the menu rather than keep scrolling down the home page.

As for the NOW service itself, I re-subscribed again recently and was surprised at how bad the sound was. It sounds insanely compressed. The movie selection is ok but I felt like it was very heavily biased towards your average big Hollywood movies and to be honest that's not really for me.

I think I'd rather either rent a particular movie I wanted to watch on a platform that doesn't have terribly compressed sound, or just watch whatever is on Netflix or Prime in decent audio and visual quality.

They also block outputting from tablets and mobiles onto the TV - unlike Netflix and Amazon Prime. This is proper bullshit.

The app works with my Chromecast just fine.

Lately I’ve particularly enjoyed Lady Bird, and Brawl in Cell Block 99. Oh and er Peter Rabbit...

i did what you’ve been describing for quite a while but the cost just racks up, hence the thread. The quality’s fine for something you just fancy trying, I’d still pick cinema or blu Ray for something I know I’ll enjoy

I subscribed recently solely for Foritude S3.  I've watched the first few episodes of The Wire which I haven't seen before.

Other than that I'm less than impressed with it.

You mean there’s a more cost effective legal way to watch the same movies? Cos I’m not pimping it on any grounds other than content, honestly if could get same on sub from the other two main players I wouldn’t touch it

I can't speak for the movies.  I only have the Entertainment package as all I initially wanted was Fortitude S3.

It used to be really bad for hangs and dropping to Vaseline-o-vision, but I’m going back at least a couple of years and it’s fine now. Film selection is good, I think. You get the odd run of crap new releases but there’s plenty of good older stuff (and Netflix/PS Store/whatever) to ride those out. I don’t even mind the difference in sound or picture quality any more. When I was younger I used to get my knob in a knot if I wasn’t getting proper HD and the best quality sound. Now I couldn’t give a fuck because everything has reached the point where it’s perfectly good enough that it just doesn’t matter.

As a vaguely related aside, I’m dreading the day I have to rewire my AV receiver and I used to do that shit for fun. I’ll probably bin the lot and get a soundbar when it dies.

I don't think it's on there at the moment, but The Leftovers is essential viewing.

Also, it's worth going on website and cancelling your subscription, they will always give you an instant deal, I've got it for £3 per month for 6 months at moment.

The NotTV AppleTV UI is terrible by the way. It’s really hard to find the series you’ve been watching when you come back in, and I’ve noticed it remembers what episode number you’re on but always resets to the first series  Are the other implementations as bad?

As for recommendations:

My Brilliant Friend

Get Shorty (better than the movie)

Highlighting these as  don't think they've been talked about elsewhere -

Just started My Brilliant Friend and it's very very good, solid acting and a nice slow paced character drama unfolding.

Get Shorty is a blast, 1st series is best, but definitely recommend watching. Quick witted and an ever changing dramatic plot.

My in-laws have a sound bar. I hate the thing. It makes everything sound like Geddy Lee is playing bass over it.

Everything is in place to compete with the juggernaut that is Netflix but Now TV is a joke. I’m a long term Apple TV user and having had several of these devices I can certainly say the Now TV app is long, long overdue for an update. I’ve just bought a new LG OLED tv and I sat down last night to watch True Detective on its own Now TV app and it wouldn’t work at all once I got logged in. Went back to my Apple TV 4K and watched both episodes in glorious 720p (that also had an occasional not smooth frame rate). It’s 2019, alternate streaming services have plenty of UHD / Dolby Vision content while Sky can’t even give us 1080p. This service currently has no chance of competing. There’s good content available but the technical side is an incredible oversight.

Seems like Apple can't either.

Bit in bold is literally the point of the thread.

Good content but delivered poorly. That should not be underestimated.

Yep that’s totally fair comment. It’s the right choice for me right now as I will go to the cinema 50 times a year and want still not see all I want, £4.49 an HD rental versus two streaming services that will only get movies a year after sky and for now given it’s movies I don’t feel a desperate need to see in full HD it’s the right call

I gave up on watching NowTv in my web browser a few months back, it requires a programme to be installed to your computer, and it crashes all the time.

If you sign up with a new account (or just a new email as I did) then you can get 2,4 or 6 months cinema bundles half price.  6 months of sky movies for £30 was too good to resist.

Yeah it's terrible. On PS4, search fails to find programmes that are definitely on there and until recently, if it found the series you're after would have episodes missing that show up on other versions of the app. Switching to 360 fixes those problems but then it frequently crashes.

Ah so I might be able to watch oz season 2 on another device?

Edit: It’s there in my phone! But it won’t let me mirror to the Apple TV :(

Can you watch part of an episode on your phone, and have it show up in your account as a partly completed episode on the Apple TV?
